You also seem to have Chichi as not caring that her husband in deep pain, so not really seeing how this makes them any worse.KaiserNeko wrote: Aaaand make Chichi and Yamcha look like a couple of scumbags? Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
I honestly think you have a huge bias against Yamcha. You hate him for the sake of hating him. He is hell of a lot better (morally, and whatnot) than some of the characters... ahem, Vegeta! He's not really a sad sap since he accomplished just as much as the other fighters but is pushed to the side more often. I mean, it's not like him taking Goku back is useless, actually, someone had to do it and he did. Look, Vegeta lost more fights than anyone in the series, but gets more screen time making it seem like he is less of a sad sap, when in reality, he accomplishes nothing... ever. Mr Satan got the earth to contribute to the Genki-Dama, not Vegeta. Vegeta sacrificed hismelf for nothing against Buu—he couldn't avenge his son from the future and the present since he couldn't defeat Buu; instead he got his butt whooped. Vegeta got humiliated by Cell twice, after Vegeta's boasts, had his son killed due to his selfishness, and could not avenge Future Trunks' death. Gohan saved all of them. Vegeta did nothing, he didn't advance the plot since Cell could have and probably would have been able to do so without Vegeta. Really, Vegeta has done absolutely nothing but make a fool out of himself and cause troubles for everyone else. He's really a loser. He's selfish, arrogant, and when he tries to back it up he can't. He got beat by a naked child, a midget and a fat man; got destroyed by Zarbon and the Ginyu Force; humiliated by Freeza; couldn't avenge his son due to his own foolishness in the first place; lets himself get mind controlled because he is insecure as a person; and has Mr Satan outshine him in the end of the show.KaiserNeko wrote:Aaaand make Chichi and Yamcha look like a couple of scumbags? You should have made a sex joke between the two to justify the appearance of Goten in the Buu arc.
I don't hate Vegeta, but I prefer him as a badguy. What I can't stand is the bias against Yamcha. I mean, Yamcha lost just as much as Krillin and Ten. He might have less wins on his plate but he usually holds his own pretty well against the big bad (or God). He never did anything to hurt or cause trouble, plus he took down the Oozaru in the first arc. Yeah, a loser... right.
TFS Vegeta is even worse as a character. Damn I hate him.
And if someone brings up the Saibaiman bs, Yamcha defeated it but it had one last move. In a way, the Z-Senshi were fighting it tournament style ala the Strongest Under the Heaven's Tournament. The Saibaiman got up after Ten fought it. It could have happened to him if Vegeta didn't interfere. Yamcha could have taken them all on just like Krillin did. Easily.
I am just hoping TFS throws Yamcha a bone where Toriyama never did. I mean, Yamcha's first goal in the beginning of the show was to get married, but the audience never knows if he does in the end (either off screen or after the series ended). I like Yamcha, he is a good character with good qualities which one can relate to. He is just never given enough screen time to show all of his capabilities. Ten and Krillin get a little more and that helps them have a fanbase too.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Yamcha got a bone throne to him by Toei Animation on Namek and Buu arc filler.

I think the scene was empathizing that Chi-Chi is just screwed up in the head. Not a bad person (though the affair idea won't affect their reputations among the fanbase that much).Kid Buu wrote:Toryiama has already branded Yamcha a cheater, so its not like him having an affair with Chichi change much. Yamcha is reduced to second base from this point from this point forward.
It would be very impressive if TFS could put together enough footage to do something unique with his character from this point on. Maybe some of the earlier DB (just DB) movies could have footage that most Western TFS fans wouldn't recognize.

Jeezy Petes people it's an abridged series, where everyone EVERYONE is only a quarter similar of their natural counterparts for laughs. Yamcha's a great character, it was bad he got shafted in the main series, but it's kind of funny that he gets shafted in the comedy series because it's comedy!

Why is it in every fandom fans like to find the one character they gets shafted like Yamcha and there becomes a cult following behind said character.

I thought it was hilarious when Vegeta went on a killing rampage haha! And the sad for you part was great!
And once again the music for 16 getting activated was great. His voice is very well done too! I kind of got annoyed by him saying Son Goku over and over though...
Yamcha's getting shafted? He's been in like every episode now compared to the other seasons..

Could be because a lot of the time, it's characters that are actually pretty awesome and the rest of the fandom spends too much time going 'dur they're just there to get smacked around lolz'. That's kinda how I feel as a Kuririn fan at times anyway.miguelnuva1 wrote:Why is it in every fandom fans like to find the one character they gets shafted like Yamcha and there becomes a cult following behind said character.
That said though, I don't think they've done anything really unfair to Yamcha in Abridged, no more so than the original work did anyway. Hell, I don't feel they've taken too awful many cheap shots at Kuririn either - I can't think of one that hasn't amused me.

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
The thing about Yamcha:
We don't hate Yamcha. For all intents and purposes, he's a fascinating character that, much like every other human character, gradually gets pushed to the sidelines as the battle powers increase. We don't think he's as selfish, lazy, or pig-headed as we write him, but we are taking a lot of his characteristics and blowing them up a bit... much like we do with other characters. Krillin is more of a scaredy cat, but he still stands up and acts when he has to. Tenshinhan is deadly serious most of the time, to the point where he's our lead snark-man and the least likely to make or respond to silly jokes. Yamcha is... well, in the original series, he's definitely a good guy who cares about his friends and isn't too afraid to jump into the action, but there are times, here and there, where you can see that he's not the most courageous out of the bunch. He's also one of the first of them all to stop training on a regular basis and there are shades of someone who'd be happier living a calmer life of luxury rather than constantly putting his life on the line to save the planet. Remember: He started out as a bandit and, though he joins Goku's team, it's not unbelievable to assume there are still habits leftover.
As far as him ever winning a fight goes, he defeats a hungry Son Goku, which was Son's kryptonite at that stage of the story. The rabbit gang is sort of a comedy troupe, so it's really difficult for me to count them as plausible threats of any kind. Oozaru I suppose I can give you, if you call that a fight, though I'd refer to it more as a disaster/action scene considering it's not the traditional 1v1 fight against an opponent we usually see. Concerning the Invisible Man, he needed HELP from several other people with, and the preliminaries barely count for anything. He loses nearly every single MAJOR fight he has.
How do we paint Yamcha? Well, a somewhat lazy, once-boasting, now declining sad-sack who quickly realizes after the Saiyan saga that he is most likely never going to be relevant again. We try to paint some sympathy for him as well, because again, we don't hate him. It's easy to understand where he's coming from. But at the end of the day, someone's gotta be the butt of the joke. To be fair, it's not like everyone in this series hasn't been from time to time. Some more than others, of course.
(EDIT: Murasaki is correct about a few things. Edited as such.)

All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I like Yamcha, though. I really do! Much more so before the Saiyan Saga, when he's an actual character who interacts with the plot on a regular basis. He just becomes far less interesting over time as his relationship with Bulma dissipates and he stops trying to be a legitimate contender. You don't hate him, but your post made it clear, you probably don't care much for him.

My point still stands about Son's hunger. Yajirobe? We treat him 100% for laughs as a fat slob with cannibalistic tendencies. We also treat Chiaotzu, who has also never, EVER won a fight, like an 8 year old. We've seen characters lose in the preliminaries like Yajirobe and Nam.
I don't know what your argument is here, actually. We exaggerate characters and a running theme with Yamcha is that, besides one or two small victories near the beginning, he has a massive losing streak that is nicked only by one or two fights he either barely tied (Saibaimen), were just stepping stones to continuing the plot (preliminaries), or needed assistance in (Invisible Man.)
