CNN: Anime, Pirating & The Economy (with DBZ)
Not quite. I've got Season Two Second Voyage sitting tightly on my shelf, already once watched. Depending on where you buy, you can get it early. And with Another 13 episodes coming out next month, I'll have the first 91 episodes. For a release that began May 2008, things are moving along relatively quick. Patience is a virture, although I certainly won't flaw anyone for buying another official release that is further along than FUNimation.Puto wrote:One Piece's DVDs are only up to episode 66 so far.JulieYBM wrote:Well, it only took two years for FUNimation to dub the first 195 episodes of One Piece. I don't think it'll be five years to do another 200 (that's about one hundred dubbed episodes a year and only 50 new Japanese a year), factor in translations for 392+ being done already for the simulcast, and...yeah. If FUNimation keeps up their pace (although they don't seem to have 196+ licensed, despite conflicting reports)...who knows?fps_anth wrote: But at the same time, there's no way I'm waiting 5+ years for the dub to catch up to where the One Piece anime is currently at in Japan. I'll watch my fansubs now, and pick up the DVDs with high quality subs when the time comes. I've picked up every One Piece DVD that has been released so far, and they are 10x better than the fansubs I watched of those episodes years ago.
But yes, DragonBall...and all Anime, don't steal it!
I don't usually download anime at all. I've only recently downloaded a RAW of the second Shippuden movie/Kakashi Gaiden Special for AMV purposes and a fandub I'm currently working on. Other than that I don't really the anime at all. If I do stream anime, I only do it as a preview for whether I'd like to buy it or not.
But nowadays, you can actually stream most anime for free(and legally) at sites like Crunchyroll and Hulu.

Ok, that answers the alternate dubs and whatnot.Kendamu wrote:It's illegal because the companies that own the rights to distribute Dragonball where you live want you to buy their product. Even if it's an alternate dub, you're still stealing Dragonball and not giving money to the rightful license holders. While I agree that they shouldn't pursue people who are watching alternate dubs that aren't available for sale, it's still the law and the corporation sees you as a thief.nathantheguitarist wrote:I know pirating is illegal and all, but how about for stuff that's impossible to find, out of print, or is so rare that it's on ebay for $200+ (which doesn't make the publishers any money anyways)?
Or things that don't have a (full) release, like the alternate dubs of Dragonball?
Is it still illegal if it's out of print, or never was in print to begin with? Who would be losing money if it was? Random stuff like this fucks with my head to make pirating seem like not such a bad thing... Especially because I'm dirt poor, and can barely afford toilet paper at the end of the month most of the time...
Sucks, eh?
But still, what about stuff out of print? With companies shut down, and production stopped, who would be losing money because of illegal downloading then?
Yes, I'm still confused.

If nobody holds the rights to what you're watching or if whoever holds the rights isn't selling anything from that franchise then, while still illegal, there isn't really a problem. If Lionsgate, who owns the rights to the 1980s Ninja Turtles cartoon, had never started putting out DVDs of the show or put it back on TV then I'd have no moral issue with downloading copies of it.nathantheguitarist wrote:Ok, that answers the alternate dubs and whatnot.Kendamu wrote:It's illegal because the companies that own the rights to distribute Dragonball where you live want you to buy their product. In the case of Dragonball Z, though, even though FUNimation isn't putting the Ocean Studios English audio on any of their DVDs, they're still putting Dragonball Z out there for sale so that people can legally own the series. It may not have the English voice cast that we prefer, but that doesn't matter. Even if we as Americans download an English dub that they don't have, we're still downloading Dragonball Z, the story that they sell on DVD in America, and it's still illegal.
Like I said, it sucks. In the end it's up to you whether you download the Ocean Studios English audio DBZ, but no matter what it's currently illegal to do so.

I would have to agree with comments from Tweaker.
Although piracy is a crime, there are more important crimes to reduce, prevent and catch. All people agree on this but when it's about money, they change their mind.
There is a piracy scale.
Intent to sell to others is a no no in my books.
But if you intend to give for free to others it is more ok then the above statement.
Piracy means financial lose to the people involved.
Piracy to the comsumer means there could be no one willing to work in the industry to make future anime, manga, etc. As the makers are in it for the money, enjoyment, employment and good at their job.

Well, with One Piece, the forum IS very supportive of the FUNi releases, but said releases are 8 years behind the current material, and the forum was started long before a legal alternative to fansubs existed in the first place, so it's pretty understandable they allow it.ShinRogafuken wrote: But One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are worse. Just go to the Arlong Park One Piece forums and most of the categories and threads in the anime section are for the several fansub groups, and the free raw providers on YouTube.
I'm not into Naruto and Bleach that much anymore, so I dont' know how bad the situation is but its probably as bad as One Piece.

Unless you live somewhere outside the US. Then you're likely to get a 'we're sorry, this isn't available in your country' f-you message.Big Momma wrote:But nowadays, you can actually stream most anime for free(and legally) at sites like Crunchyroll and Hulu.
Crunchyroll might be different. Haven't checked it out in ages.

I believe it is. I find it funny that this appeared and then there is a massive pull. Youtube pulls videos all the time, but this is the first I heard for reasons outside of the US.ShinRogafuken wrote:Hmm, do you think Toei is taking action against all these DBZ YouTube channels because of what CNN talked about in the report? The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
