Discussion specifically regarding the "refreshed" TV version of DBZ created in Japan for its 20th anniversary, including individual threads for each episode.
I think this might be a record for Kai (or possibly the block in general - I remember Bleach did 1.5 million at the climax of the Aizen stuff, but can't recall the exact number)? Guessing the numbers can be partially attributed to the 8PM rerun and partially to people tuning in specifically for the over 9000 meme (and then flipping their shit about it being not-over-the-top 8000 instead).
Edit: neglected to screencap it, but for anyone who doesn't want to actually check the link the 8PM rerun had 650k viewers.
Looks like the 8PM Kai rerun in doing what's intended.

For the record, the re-runs low ratings are probably due to the fact most of the schedules didn't have enough time to update to note that it was Dragon Ball Kai was airing, rather it still listed Sit Down, Shut up. Either way, I'd give it a couple weeks before I'd worry about anything.

I should probably clarify this since there's a bit of confusion, but DBZ Kai hasn't quite yet beat the record high Bleach set. Two months after the record mentioned in Beerus' link, Bleach set another record high on August 3rd, 2013, where it scored 1.559 million viewers (which was the aforementioned Aizen arc's climax).
This week's DBZ Kai scored 1.555 million, which is incredibly close (only a 4000 viewer difference!), but not quite there yet.
Hellspawn28 wrote:I remember DBZ on Toonami was CN highest watched show. I don't think it was 61 million, but it could have been at least 3-5 million at the time.
The height of Toonami was vaguely around 2001/2002 as I recall.
If I'm remembering correctly from an old Forbes article about TV/Web convergence it brought up that Toonami's ratings in 2001 was somewhere between 3.5 and 4 million people (I want to say 3.7 but it was somewhere in that range.)
"DragonBall Z on the Cartoon Network 220+ episodes. #1 rated show on all Cable Television (Nielsen Ratings, September 2002) and #1 rated show on Cartoon Network from 2000 to 2003."
"DragonBall Z on the Cartoon Network 220+ episodes. #1 rated show on all Cable Television (Nielsen Ratings, September 2002) and #1 rated show on Cartoon Network from 2000 to 2003."
The Season 3 premiere of DBZ gave CN their highest ratings ever.
And it's still nothing compared to the popularity of the show in Latin American countries.

Generally all accurate with a few caveats.
Their highest ratings ever for the time back with Season 3 was when the channel was actually still rather limited in who carried it (I want to say Comcast and Adelphia added it in early 2000.)
Faulconer's information actually disagrees with Funimation's own information (in the press release.) And those demographics are ULTRA hyper specific (which good for them, the job of anyone doing demographics is to find a way to make your thing number 1.) I do enjoy the fun of them mentioning doing better than prime time in their demographics for a demographic which generally is expected to be low in prime time.
12:00a Dragon Ball Z Kai 1.1 1564
12:30a Kill La Kill 0.9 1204
1:00a Naruto: Shippuden 0.8 1099
1:30a Inuyasha: The Final Act 0.7 969
2:00a Gurren Lagann 0.6 837
2:30a One Piece 0.5 813
3:00a Deadman Wonderland 0.5 800
Dragon Ball's ratings prowess continue to astonish me. While the PM hour was watched mostly by kids and teens (A demographic Adult Swim doesnt want) its still AMAZING. And the actual premiere was OUTSTANDING. Only Bleach ever got that high but now DBZKai which is nothing more than a glorified rerun that's already been rerun to death comes and pulls this off. DBZ truly is something else.

That must be saying a lot. I hear it's a full-blown pop culture icon there.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.
I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.
No wonder they wanted to get Kai on at a second, earlier time. Capturing even a fraction of the old DBZ love is a lot in terms of good ratings. I certainly contributed to them during Z's original run from 1998 to 2003 I believe (also watched DB, but GT never was able to keep me that long).

Which in several Latin American countries was still below Saint Seiya. Damn shame it's never really caught on too big here (they were brothers in arms/rivals in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1986-1991 *well, 1990/1991 was when the rankings dropped and it had to end, but still*).

Dragon Ball Z is practically a religion in Mexico and Portugal. It's that big.

It's not quite that large.
The Mexican box office for Battle of Gods was barely in the top 50 the year it came out. It did nice numbers, but nothing to suggest it's large enough to equate it to anything that special. Their apparently full roll-out for it there didn't even equate to double of the super limited release it had here.
Obviously in the past things could have been different, but that isn't relative to how it is now.

I believe in being realistic and not overrate hype, but what amount would be enough to confirm that DBZ is popular enough? It didnt beat other movies sure, but it lost to adult and more serious fare. As beloved as DBZ is, there is a limit to nostalgia.
I guess this actually kills my argument more than anything, but DBZ is still quite the smash. No other anime franchise has the claim to mantain enough of its momentum after nearly 20 years after ending and not being on the air anymore.

I'm not saying it isn't popular, it just isn't on the level that he's saying it is. And then after he says it's nearly that big he adds to his statement to make it seem like it isn't hyperbole and it's actually as large as he's suggested.
When it's doing 10% of the business the big films in the country are doing, that isn't at the level he's talking about, because he's making it sound like it's just blowing everything out of the water.

To be fair, it had a limited showing in Latin America.
