The Good:
-Champa and Vados interaction
-Champa and Beerus interaction
-Piccolo gets a fight
-Vegeta vs. Magetta tactics
-Hit vs Goku, new and old techniques
-Zenou cuteness
-Dragon hugeness
The meh:
-That yellow bear guy, no character and one gimmick
-Frost being evil but failing at it.
-Cabba goes SSJ too easy

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
It was ok-ish, nothing spectacular, but definitely a cute little arc. And it felt like introduction to all this crazy new stuff, it'll be interesting to see where the story goes from here, other than obvious all 12 Universes tournament.
Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
Now that it's really over, it still has my interest up for a more positive future...maybe. So far Super has had a underwhelming arc with some fecal matter on it (With the universe stake being the only actual interesting addition), and as Jeff Goldblum would say "That is one big pile of shit" of an F arc that plagued the series for month's. Finally we had a worthwhile arc that while not amazing, was still fun to watch. Nothing groundbreaking til Zeno showed up, which was somewhat underwhelming considering how short his appearance was. Though it sets up another tournament which will probably once again will waste it's cast like this one did overall.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
Decent at best, had some stupid 'plot twists' such as Frost's bait and switch and too much nostalgic pandering (bringing back the final flash for example). None of the fights actually interested me be honest except for Goku vs Hit. Even then we had some dumb fanservice ( Kaioken's return). Omni King as a character does intrigue me however and Beerus act of kindness was sweet.
Goku's return was also stupid and Champsa is so enjoyable to watch.

Tournament
Toei did a better job than I thought with this tournament.
I have to say it could be much better though. Most fights had flaws. Either the lenght, the animation/art or just the writting (this one is already Toriyama's fault).
The only fights that were perfect in this categories were Vegeta vs Magetta and Goku vs Hit. All the others needed a fix.
Worst fight: Goku vs Botamo by far. The manga version is better but the fight itself is still meh and the only one I didn't enjoy.
Favourite fight: Vegeta vs Cabba. This was the fight I was looking forward the most, and while it was different from what I was expecting, It wa sstill pretty enjoysble. My biggest complaint is how short it was. Cabba unlocking SSJ and get beaten in the same episode wasn't a good move. ON other hand, Vegeta's character here was awesome and I love how he gave something for Cabba strive for.
Best fight: Goku vs Hit. Props to Toriyama for giving an unique ability to Hit and for bringing Kaioken back. Props to Toei for episode 39. It was a miracle in this series. Loved everything about it.
Writing
The biggest problem of this tournament. The fact that from U7 team only Saiyan won is disappointing. But the fact that Buu didn't even fought and Monaka turn out to be a joke
was even worse.
Buu: Sacrificed by a stupid gag that doesn't fit his character. He's not Snorlax. His naps in DBZ only took seconds, they weren't never long. I accepted this excuse in ROF Movie, because it was clear Toriyama didn't want to use him. Now putting Buu in the promotional poster for this tournament and pull off the same move?! Have mercy. This is misleading promotion.
Piccolo: Trolled by Frost, humiliated by Goku/Vegeta and beaten by the bad writing. Seriously, if Jaco doubted that Frost did something to Goku in the previous fight, why didn't he warn Piccolo right away?! To make it worse, Vegeta tells to Piccolo back off and he does it without question. And Piccolo still gladly roots for Vegeta like nothing had happened. Doesn't he have a personality anymore?!
Monaka:...
Champa's team
I'm grateful that Toriyama didn't make U6 team a Saiyan fest and tried to come up with new races. Botamo, Magetta and Hit are more than welcome and I'm also glad Toriyama bother to give unique abilities to each one of them. With that said, have at least one Saiyan was predictable, but Cabba could at least have an original haircut...
Frost is the only one I hate. Never saw it coming, because its too bad to be true. We just had Freeza coming back again in ROF, the previous arc, and now we had Frost, another bad guy from the same race. Enough is enough. His only saving grace was he turn out to be different from all the others, but no. Everything seemed fine, until he revealed his true colors. Sometimes some plot twist are not welcome. He's trash!
I would gladly replace him for a savage Namekian and bring the Namekian Book of Legends to the table, because I still didn't forget about that book. It would also be a
breath of fresh air, since it's been a long time since we saw another badass Namekian.
Most disappointing character: Obviously Frost.
Most surprising character: Magetta.
Favourite character: Hit. My only complaint about Hit's character is his color scheme. We have enough purple charactesr in Super already. He should have another color.
Audience
Too empty. In my dream world, each time there is a tournament between diferrent universes, all Gods and their respective attendants from the other Universes are invited to watch it. If that is asking too much, because Toriyama had to come up with a lot of character designs right now, take a page ouf of Yu Yu Hakusho book and make the U7 play on enemy ground. Have a lot of characters from U6 rooting for Champa's and trashing U7 team. I love these scenarios.
However, I have to say Beerus and Champa interactions blow any other interaction out the water. Unlike Jaco, who tries to be funny and barely makes me laugh, Champa never
failed. The brillant voice actor behind him helps. But theses interactions don't make up for how empty the audience is.
Overall, I enjoyed the tournament but could be much better. I would change a lot of things. Still, despite everyting I still think this is one of the best tournaments that Dragon Ball ever had, only behind 22nd/23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, which I find to be the best ones ever. Even when bringing other shows to the table.
Pacing
The pacing was fast. We should have had more training episodes before the tournament. We only had 20 seconds of Piccolo vs Gohan and 15 ugly seconds of Goku vs Vegeta. What the hell is that?! A episode of Beerus and Whis quest for Monaka would be great too. But instead of that we had mostly a recap episode. That's terrible.
It was also too convenient that the Nameless Planet had the last Super DB, which I hated since I wanted an adventure quest with some of the secondary characters.
Things that the manga did better
- Beerus vs Champa. Compared to that, the anime version can only be trolling.
- Goku vs Botamo. Like I said before the fight itself is meh, but the manga did it better.

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
I stand by my original comment in this thread: it's been the best arc of Super and one of the best arcs the Dragon Ball franchise has ever produced. There was a bit of a rough start but it got so much better as it progressed. Hit vs Goku was phenomenal, the beatdown Vegeta received from Hit was one of the best the franchise has ever produced, Magetta was a wonderfully charming character, Champa stole the show with everything he did or said, Hit was awesome in all regards, the lore provided was the best since the Saiyan arc and the ending was brilliantly handled. I hated how Frost's character was wasted and Goku vs Botamo was disappointing. But everything else about this arc was either good or great.

My opinion is still pretty unchanged. The Piccolo vs Frost fight is THE best fight choreography wise DB has had in a long time and I liked Vegeta vs Cabba but the rest of the fights were nothing special. I think I would've liked Hit vs Goku a LOT more if it was Time Leap vs Instant Transmission rather than Kaio-Ken giving Goku the ability to randomly break time.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

But to break time? Hit is freezing time all around Goku, so unless Goku's speed is comparable to the Flash where he can break the fourth dimension, I don't buy it. Now IT would've worked better considering you literally blink out of existence itself for an instant while using it. It could've been cool to see Goku having to evolve and tinker with his IT in ways we haven't seen before instead of just powering up to fight Hit.Lord Beerus wrote:Well, the Kaioken does amplify strength and speed...ekrolo2 wrote:My opinion is still pretty unchanged. Writer 1: Hmm. Goku has defeated and broken a lot of things over the decades. We need something new for him to defeat and break. Any suggestions?
Writer 2: Gohan's confidence and fighting spirit?
Writer 3: Nah. We're saving that for the next arc. Any other suggestions?

It was okay... really basic story but has some great potential material, loved Piccolo vs. Frost, and the U6 fighters were cool (except Botamo and Frost). A bit too gag-driven (especially anime) but that's what people here are into so can't complain.
Also Frost... fucking hate that guy.

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
I kind of like the way you laid out your post FortuneSSJ, so if you don't mind, I think I'll lay out my thoughts in a similar manner.
The Overall Story
We've known the core concept of this arc for a long, long time it feels like. In a way it kind of felt like the old days to me - knowing what was coming, but not getting to experience it for myself just yet. That was pretty much the entirety of my experience as a fan back in the late, late 90's and throughout the 2000's. It was only a little bit like that though, just enough to get me feeling nostalgic, since this time around nobody actually knew the way things would turn out all the way through to the end, and I was actually getting to experience it for myself a lot more quickly after learning about it. It was a fun ride that was equal parts new and old for me, and something I didn't even really try to do with Kai since there wasn't as much point to do so, and it's a ride I'm still eager to continue on with.
Anyway, the story itself! The idea of another God of Destruction popping up and causing issues was something that people had been calling for since the end of Battle of Gods, and admittedly it does feel more naturally like a growth from that storyline than it does the Resurrection 'F' one, though I'm still thankful for there being something in-between the two. I'm also thankful that, while Champa and Vados are fairly similar to Beerus and Whis, there's still a fair amount different as well, especially in the tone of their characters. With Beerus, we were introduced to him in a manner that, while he was comedic as well, there was never a question of how dangerous he was as well. With Champa though, the reverse kind of happens - we're introduced to him in an entirely comedic manner, bickering with Beerus, and their whole issue stemming from food in the end. Logic tells us that he's still dangerous as well due to 1) being able to square off with Beerus so easily, and 2) he's a God of Destruction, it's kind of their thing - but we don't really get to see much of that until his threats towards the end. It was a nice inversion of what we already knew, rather than just doing the exact same thing again.
As for Vados...I don't really have much to say on her yet, really. We haven't had as much of her to work with really. She's attractive enough I suppose (I know she's caught the eye of quite a few fans anyway
), but I fear she's going to fall in the same realm as Whis where we might not ever actually get to see her fight, which is twofold disappointing. For one thing, the series is still in pretty dire need for more female fighters. For another, it's been a long, long time since we've actually gotten to see a 'master' character fight. Since Roshi, really. Every other master has just been 'really strong but quickly surpassed' or 'not really strong but has cool techniques or training methods purely to pass on to our main characters'. Now though, we've got a pair of master type characters that seemingly are not going to be surpassed that quickly, so actually getting to see them fight - even if it's just against some mooks or something - would be a nice change of pace.
Moving on to a tournament arc was not something I ever would have predicted, but was definitely an interesting return of an old trope for the series. It was especially nice that it wasn't interrupted and actually got to play out, and that it was a team based tournament, something we hadn't had in the series before. I'll refrain from talking about the fights themselves for now, but for how they played out...ehhh...I'm mixed. A lot of people were annoyed that Piccolo didn't get a win, and I definitely would have preferred for him to get one (and for it to have been mentioned he'd grown a bit stronger by sparring with the stronger Gohan, to whip him back into shape), but he still put on a good showing in his fight regardless, so that was still enjoyable enough for me. I was disappointed by the lack of Boo fighting though. He and 18 are the two characters the most 'gypped' out of getting their heroic side fights. Every other 'villain-turned-hero' in the franchise got at least a fight or two after the fact, be it Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Vegeta, etc. And it usually happened in the arc right after their initial one. With 18 though, she never got that chance in the Boo arc sadly, and Boo, well...we didn't have another arc (barring GT) after the end of his introductory one, so now would have been the perfect time to put him to use. Instead though, we get the idea of him fighting raised, only for it to be tossed away almost as soon as it's brought up. Definitely still disappointed by that. ...Though now, the more I think about it, the more I kind of wish 18 had decided to enter instead. Surely the idea of using the Super Dragon Balls to wish for an insane amount of money could have appealed to her? Beerus was always supposed to be the one getting the wish in the end, but that didn't stop Boo from thinking he could get a wish for Mr. Satan, so...
Despite a lot of early predictions about treachery in the background, the tournament turned out just to be a tournament - like I said, I'm actually kind of happy about that in a way, since we haven't had an uninterrupted tournament in so long. It is a little disappointing though, given all the hints dropped and read into by fans throughout the course of it. And it would have been preferable to some of (or in particular one of) the twists in the story we did get. Monaka turning out to be a red herring is fine with me, Hit actually not being evil per say just being a rather honor-bound hitman was a nice new character type, and Champa and Vados not being up to anything in particular with the Super Dragon Balls (though I still kind of question why they were searching for them in the first place...that's still kinda suspect) are all fine...but man did, and does, the Frost twist rub me the wrong way. Having a 'good' member of Freeza's race would have been hard to play off just right I suppose, and looking back on it, the way they were showing him as good was kind of insipid, but either way it would have been preferable to a character who is so akin to Freeza yet again that they flat out got Nakao to play him. It's a really weird mood whiplash too. 'Oh man, the Universe 6 team has a guy that looks like Freeza, this is gonna be bad!' 'Oh wait, this guy's actually like super-duper nice, how neat!' '...FOOLED YOU, haha, I actually am pretty evil!', all in the space of a couple of episodes. It's...how are we even supposed to process that other than as a messy missed opportunity? So yeah, easily my least favorite part of the story thus far.
Everything moving forward from that, is still too new for me to fully process really, especially since we don't know what may or may not end up leading right to the next arc or a future one. The last Super Dragon Ball being the nameless planet or the Universe 6 Earth was something that people had been calling for a long while now, so I fully expected it to be either one as well, convenient or n - actually, it's because it was convenient I kind of expected it. For some reason I never really put much stock in the idea that they would win but then have to go hunting down the last Ball. I would have found it more likely for them to lose and end up in the other universe, and then have to spend a certain number of episodes looking for all seven of them again to restore their Earth, than I would have that.
The New Characters
This one is probably easiest to break even further down into the characters specifically.
Champa/Vados - I already kind of said most of what I'd have to say about their developments in the story portion, since they're so much so tied into it, so there's not really a lot left to add about them. Champa is a great foil for Beerus in a different way than Goku or Whis are, so he's fun to have around. Don't really know what else to make of Vados though.
Monaka - Like I already said, I'm more or less okay with the double twist of him actually being really weak, though I guess if I'm being completely honest...a vindictive part of me wanted him to actually live up to the hype. I wanted this diminutive, derpy looking little nipple-guy to be amazing strong and badass in the most silly of ways. It would have amused me, as would have the continued reactions from a certain sect of the fandom. What can I say, even I enjoy a bit of schadenfreude every once in a while.
Botamo - Was expecting a bit more from this guy in a weird way. I knew he wasn't going to be the best on the team or anything since he fought first, but...I'unno. I'm really torn on which approach to his powers I prefer too, between the manga and the anime. It's one of the few things about the two versions that I'm torn on too (in general I tend to opt for the anime on this one). Wish we'd gotten to see a bit more of his personality too.
Frost - ...*sigh* Like I said, huge, huge disappointment for this guy. First off, there's the triple twist or whatever you want to call it that I already talked about. Then there's the fact that he technically gets three fights all to himself after I've already lost interest in him. Finally (though this came first, I guess), there's the re-use of Nakao. Don't get me wrong, I freakin' love Nakao. He and a select few others are easily my favorite seiyuu in Dragon Ball. But back when we thought Frost was actually good, using Nakao again just felt really lazy. Especially since, good as Nakao was, he totally could not sell Frost as a good guy, due to how eternally linked his voice is with Freeza. Really it should have been (and may have been intended to be) one of our first hints that he was actually evil, that he shared Nakao's voice. It's just such a waste.
Magetta - Now THIS is what I'm talkin' about! Magetta has so many awesome factors going on at once that he's hands down my favorite of the Universe 6 team. He's a mecha type character, something we haven't had a whole lot of in general and certainly haven't had in a long time (I don't really count the Androids since, for all extensive purposes, they were just humanoid robots). He's got interesting techniques and things about him to make him way more effective in a fight beyond just being strong. He somehow manages to be fairly silent and still has a ton of character and presence. Hell, he's the one I hate to see lose the most, especially since it's not so much Vegeta's punch that does the trick, but his insult. Poor robot guy. They wouldn't treat the Iron Giant this way!
Cabba - I'm in a really weird place on Cabba. I'm not really that interested in or impressed by him himself, but...well, I do quite like his interaction with Vegeta. Cabba himself is just kinda sorta there, and while he does raise some interesting questions by being a Saiyan from a place where Saiyans weren't all war-mongering scoundrels like the ones we've always known, and that said home planet still exists...I'unno. We just already have enough Saiyans hanging around, that getting one more just can't really do it for me 100% no matter what they do with him probably.
Hit - I wasn't sure what to make of Hit at first either. He started off as the token silent guy with his arms crossed in the background - so basically, Universe 6's answer to Piccolo most of the time. He couldn't really shake that image for me either until his fight with Goku, where he actually started to open up a little. Once we started to get more of his personality, the hitman with at least some odd code of ethics - he doesn't strike me as one that kills for enjoyment, just out of a job, and probably doesn't enjoy killing those that are really, really far beneath him regardless - that I started to like him a little better. He's still a little too 'stoic' to get my vote of favorite though, so...eh, he's a clear sweep for the number two spot though.
The Fights
Again, I feel this is probably easier to break even further down to talk about.
Goku V.S. Botamo - Kind of wish there was a bit more to this one, but eh, it's the opening fight of the tournament. As a result, I feel it and Botamo as a character both kind of fall to the task of showing us that the tournament won't be purely about who's stronger, and will also have some level of skills shown off to it as well.
Goku V.S. Frost - Initially this one was pretty enjoyable, and we even get a different name for the 'third form' for Freeza's race out of it, leaving me to wonder what names the other forms might have other than the numbered route. It even ended on an interesting enough note too, with Goku somehow losing, but alas...not all that memorable in the end, in retrospect.
Piccolo V.S. Frost - Probably my third favorite fight of the tournament, because again, I feel like Piccolo actually got a pretty good showing in this, win or no win. He gets to show off some skills, and even does pretty well at overpowering a guy who's seemingly far stronger than himself, again showing that much as the fandom struggles with it (and in all fairness, in large strokes anyway, the franchise itself), it's not all about power levels in the end, at all.
Vegeta V.S. Frost - And then there's this...fight. It's satisfying enough in how quick it is actually, since by this point I am just utterly disgusted and tired of Frost and what he failed to bring to the table. So in that respect, One Punch Vegeta for the win!
Vegeta V.S. Magetta - This one is easily either my second favorite fight, or a really close tie in first place with my other favorite. Again, Magetta gets to show off all different kinds of cool tricks and powers, and as a result keeps the stronger Vegeta on his toes the entire time. It's kind of an inverse of the Piccolo/Frost situation, only with a far more entertaining resolution.
Vegeta V.S. Cabba - This fight's probably about on the middle ground, again kind of like Cabba himself - I guess a lot of my enjoyment of these matches stems from how much I enjoy the new characters involved, since we already kind of know our established ones so well at this point. Anyway, the fighting itself is nothing to write home about I guess, but the manner in which it's all laid out in the end, showing us Vegeta in a 'mentor' role, something we've never seen him as before, is enjoyable enough. And they actually managed to play it off in a manner that didn't feel out of character for this new layer of Vegeta's personality, surprisingly enough too.
Vegeta V.S. Hit - Youch. Not much to say here, other than payback's a you know what, eh Vegeta? Not that Frost didn't have it coming, and you did at least last longer than he did, but...well, yeah.
Goku V.S. Hit - This fight, for the most part, probably comes in second for me to the Vegeta/Magetta one. The tail end portion though, with all the great banter and interaction, a great use of our first insert song moment (even if it's just the opening again), and some AMAZING animation for at least the 'finale' of it? Oh man is it hard not to love this fight for that and that alone. It's what makes this one so hard to choose between.
Monaka V.S. Hit - Even though a part of me still wishes Monaka lived up to the hype, I'm not really sure how I'd have felt about a fight between the two, especially not with it being the last one. A final fight that comes down to two people that are relatively unknown to us, while our established and beloved cast just watches from the background? Without proper build up and execution, that's a tough act to pull off without it actually being pretty dull. I might be enjoying the series as a whole more so than most other fans, but not even I have enough faith in the production for them to have pulled that off properly. So with that all in mind, I'm more than okay with the comedic way this one worked out.
So yeah, the best fights of the tournament for me are easily Piccolo V.S. Frost, Vegeta V.S. Magetta, and Goku V.S. Hit. Three pretty enjoyable fights with six different people, out of a tournament consisting of eight fights between nine contestants? I'd consider that a decent enough success.
Looking Forward
Long post is long, but the last thing I really wanted to put my two cents on is...well, speculation about what's to come next (based on what we actually know as a result of the end of this arc - so for example, I'm not gonna speculate any further on the 'future character' tease/hint/whatever tidbit from an interview, at least not here). I've seen a lot of talk about the Omniversal Tournament, but honestly...I'm not sure that's something we're even going to see. I could be entirely wrong, and I'd definitely enjoy it if we did get to see it, since the other universes should be filled with all different kinds of things and not give us any more Saiyans, Namekians, Freeza's race, or anything like that (other than probably having their own Kaios, Kaioshin, Gods of Destruction and attendants, and what have you). I'd also really enjoy it if it took some cues from Yu Yu Hakusho about how to really work a team based tournament to it's limits and beyond. But...I'unno. Something about it strikes me as this very throwaway line and thing, not something we're actually going to see anytime soon. If nothing else, I really do highly doubt it'll be the very next arc.
As such, I'm not really sure if we'll see much more of Champa and Vados just yet, or any of the Universe 6 crew sadly. It'd be nice to see Sadla, and I kind of hope we get to eventually, but I'm not really sure that it's going to happen. It too, strikes me as something that's fairly throwaway as a comment. Same goes for the revived Universe 6 Earth - I can't really imagine that's going to be a major thing. And even if it is, I really doubt we're going to get full on different versions of characters we already know. Though if Frost is anything to go on, we could totally get characters that aren't but may as well be...so...yeah.
I do think though that the Super Dragon Balls are going to be a thing again in the future though. The fact that they specifically note these Dragon Balls as having no limits to what they can grant (not that the original Earth ones weren't touted the same way initially or anything...) makes me think something is going to happen eventually that's going to require our heroes to make use of this new set of Dragon Balls rather than their own or Namek's. The same event might also take Beerus and Whis out of the equation somehow, thus leaving our characters with a problem that's going to be really hard for them to solve on their own, something where now they wouldn't even be able to try and appeal to the Gods to help even if they wanted to or thought they'd actually listen. Said search for the Super Dragon Balls could easily be how we get to see more of Universe 6, since at least some of them would be over there now, and we might see Sadla at that point maybe, but I'm still not sure about that either.
So in conclusion and to keep this post from getting any more overly long...I don't think I'd say this arc was one of my favorite arcs in the franchise period, not by a long shot. It's definitely no Piccolo Daimao or 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arcs. Hell, it's not even the Freeza arc which overall I still really enjoy, even when it drags in places. But I probably do enjoy it more in the end than the Androids/Cell arc, and I'd maybe put it on par with the Saiyan arc or Boo arcs for the most part. It was definitely the best part of Super so far (not that it had much competition), and I eagerly look forward to see what's next.

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
I'd rank it as such:
1 - Freeza arc (fantastic)
2 - Saiyan arc (fantastic)
3 - 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc (great)
4 - Red Ribbon Army arc (great)
(5 - Battle of Gods film) (good)
5 - 21st Tenkaichi Budokai arc (good)
6 - Majin Boo arc (above average)
7 - Piccolo Daimao arc (above average)
8 - Champa arc (above average)
9 - Hunt for the Dragon Balls arc (above average)
10 - Battle of Gods arc (average)
11 - Artificial Human arc (average)
12 - 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai arc (average)
13 - Resurrection F arc/film (bad)
14 - Bebi arc (bad)
15 - Shadow Dragons arc (bad)
16 - Black Star Dragon Ball arc (terrible)
17 - Super 17 arc (terrible)
I think it was a bit disappointing in some respects, like Boo not competing, the last dragon ball being the nameless planet and it being the Goku and Vegeta show, but it was also surprisingly good in others. It was a decent arc, above average for Dragon Ball, not something I'd call good in the grand scheme of things. Definitely not bad and easily the best arc in Super to date. Don't know whether to place it above or below the Hunt for the Dragon Balls arc, but I think it's current placement is alright.

Re: What did you think of the Champa arc?
The nameless planet being the last Dragon Ball just seemed to be for convenience if anything.
