This thing has a picture quality even worse than fansubs

You obviously have never seen a DBZ fan-sub from the 90's I suppose.

I've seen that kind of thing before... question is, what is it, that crusty-looking line at the top? What IS that? I've always wondered, seeing that sort of mess in a few animated films before. Somebody educate me. :?

Actually, I've been watching fansubs since 1990s, YEARS before the FUNi DVDs came out. Maybe it's because I haven't seen them in a while now, but this picture that DBW had posted looks tacky to me.

HEY ALL!

Just got back from Comic-Con and I hit up the FUNimation booth. They had a DBZ display playing clips from movies 10 through 13 as well as a trailer for Season 1. In a glass case they had cover boxes for many upcoming DBZ releases including the box for Season 1. Underneath it a sign saying "TOP SECRET!"

As it stands at the moment, it's a 5 disc foldout with a carboard cover that goes over it once it's closed. When I asked the FUNimation people at the booth they all had no idea as to he release date.

I'll try hitting up the FUNimation panel tomorrow, more news as it comes!

So at least, what was the cover like? Was it the same tacky recycled image of Vegeta throwing a tantrum, like the online retailers such as RightStuff had posted?

And remember to ask FUNimation if they can use a better cover art image, rather than that ugly-assed Vegeta cover, if you can.

And remember to ask FUNimation to re-dub all of DBZ with the original music!

The day we get the English version of DBZ with the original Japanese soundtrack and an accurate, well written scripts, (For God's sakes FUNimation, give those so-called "writers" of yours the boot already, and hire competent ones!!) would be any fan's dream come true.

There are people who still long for this? Even after a recent redub the makes it plainly apparent that this won't happen anytime soon? Who are these "any fans", and why do they apparently apply towards everyone?

And erm, what about the first three Z movies?

I can understand people longing for it, but you're right about it never happening. DBZ has become popular with the 'Japan is GHEY' crowd, so there's no way they'd change what isn't broken. If you doubt me, go to GameFAQs and read the threads. It's sad, but oh well.

Besides, FUNi has competant people, they just know how to work the business model. DBZ is better for America on a financial level as a brainless, supercharged action show. Anything that detracts from that would cause the English-only fans to scratch their heads. Thankfully, not all shows are handled this way, even in FUNi's catalogue.

Just be grateful I suppose. And yes, the first three Z movies were decent, I've actually overlaid those soundtracks to DragonBox footage off the discs I own and burned it for my personal collection.

I have one more thing to add to that. At least we have thy billingual DVDs with great subtitles, right? Sure, the footage is questionable (to some, but I like it), and the music is mono, but hey! Better that than nothing.
Oh I know. FUNi's gotten great Japanese artwork for everyone of their other series, but DBZ has always come up short. Thanks for pointing that out though.
Not really. *Points to movie DVDs*

I'm hoping for this release. For one thing to get all these 'enhanced and added features' and so I have a chance to buy the entire set (Wal-Mart and Future Shop don't stock the earlier releases -_-)

I know what you mean. I have a friend whose always loved DBZ but sadly is ignorant to anything that isn't the dub. He can't possibly understand why I'd rather watch the show in Japanese with the original music and read subtitles when I could just watch it in English. :P

Yeah, most of my other friends are "dubbies" as well. When I would try to watch it in Japanese /w subtitles, they're rather confused as to why Goku sounds so high-pitched.

Personally, DBZ is one of the very few anime shows, where I watch its original Japanese version on such massive basis. But with other shows that were dubbed properly (Cowboy Bebop, Blue Gender, Trigun, and etc), I watch their original Japanese versions just so I can hear how the characters' Japanese voices sound like. And that's it. If the entire Dragonball Z series was dubbed right, just like the first 3 movies were done, I'd have no problems with the English dub whatsoever. And to me, the original 1997/1998 Pioneer dubs of the first three DBZ movies are the only real English versions of any DBZ animated property. So with that said, in my opinion both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT were hell of a lot better off in Pioneer's hands, than they ever were in FUNimation's. I agree with most of you guys here, FUNi is a right company, when it comes to licensing and dubbing other anime series. But just not for DBZ and GT. Never were or ever will be. And believe me, while I laud FUNimation for the marvelous job they've done with dubbing of their other shows, such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Blue Gender and so on, I spit on their treatment of DBZ and DBGT.

Don't get me wrong, I can see why people would long for a "proper" dub of the series. The "what-if" questions that it brings up are certainly intriguing. I just don't see the need to dwell on the issue when it's plainly apparent that it won't happen at any point in the forseeable future. Meanwhile, there are pleanty of DB-related things that one can move on and realistically look forward to. Like, well, this upcoming dvd set. :P

(I confess, though, the problem word here might be "realistically"...)
