I don't get it either, there's some sad weird bunch of people in this world. I couldn't think of anything worse than going to one of these geeky conventions full of neck beards playing dress up.

Anytime I've seen any of these Q and A's I can't help but cringe over it.
I've gone to a convention and it's fun. Not all the questions are dumb. Some are really interesting and fun and the answers can be insightful.

Neckbeard, really? You are on a Dragon Ball forum!

I was dragged to a convention once and didn't enjoy my time there, mostly because I'm not a fan of unorganized spaces and events, but I understand why so many people enjoy it. You get your neckbeard card the moment you get into anime in the first place, though.

For sure. Glass house, stones, throwing, etc. Beyond ridiculous. There's already enough nonsense in this thread as there is; any more of this type will be (and is actively being) removed going forward.

Can we refrain from terms like neckbeard? We're all geeks, and probably have experience with being teased because our geekdom wasn't as acceptable as other people's geekdoms. So why must we stoop to that level and forget that everyone is a geek about something?

I enjoyed my time at the convention, but it's not an experience I'm likely to go to anymore, especially since so many of the q and a's are uploaded to youtube.

I was born in the 90s, so by the time I was old enough to be geeky it was much more socially acceptable than what I hear about from the 80s and such. That said, I've never heard of the term neckbeard until now and I don't really know what it means.

That's just being a fan of the show, not being a full grown adult, dressing up as a fictional character and going to a dedicated convention for it full of other weird adult nerds in dress up to then go ask the voice actors of the show some stupid questions and laugh in unison at every little hope they make.

I went to PSX last year dressed in Kame gi and an Arale hat and got a lot of positive comments (most of which Dr. Slump related!). PSX isn't a dress-up-type show but it was super fun.

Spoilers: Girlfriend cosplays and made the costume, she went as a Danganrompa character.

I see where you're coming from, but that comes with the territory. Everything is susceptible to having fans that range from those who just casually watch/read/play/whatever, to those who dress up as those characters and go to conventions. You can't expect people to be on the same "level of fandom" as you. People genuinely enjoy those things. They don't look like they're for me. I don't want to dress up as anyone and go to those things, but much like anything else, people have to be more open-minded about that. In a way, I give them more credit than I give myself because I don't want to do that, but who knows if that's because I don't want to do that, or because I have layers of self-consciousness over it that prevents me from doing so? The point is, here in this forum, you'll find fans of all different levels, and your words can definitely offend some or many of them. And if you don't care, well, not to speak for anyone running the website, but I don't think that's really tolerated around here.

You've registered for an account on the biggest/oldest/still-active internet discussion board about a foreign children's cartoon from 30 years ago, and you have a sizable amount of posts.

You are in absolutely no position to be passing judgement on convention attendees, which is ridiculously mainstream and "normal" by any measurement.

This is not even a conversation, and as I already stated, it is over. Your words and actions do not live up to the Kanzenshuu community standards, and you are out of line. Considering the activity already taken against your account, I would re-evaluate what it is you are looking to get out of your time here.

FighterZ is perfect example of changes that matter, the subtitles aren't reflective of what is being said in Japanese and that is when it becomes a problem. That or like Pokemon where the dub replaces the Japanese audio completely. I feel like a dub can and should take liberties if they want I personally think DBS dub is perfect blend it isn't as bad as Z but there are instances where they work and work well in my opinion, just look at the BZ dub it is too literally translated and doesn't flow at all. If Schemmel thinks adding a bit of accent on SSR Black will help better synergize with Zamasu then he should go for it and then we can judge, dismissing him out of hand I think is unfair. Nozawa told Toei to not put Gohan into the Dr. Slump crossover so if she can get away with actually influencing something on the show then Schemmel should be allowed to accent to a character.

I agree the Magetta thing was stupid but frankly he's a fluff character anyway so not much to care about but mostly changes are still done within context or enhance what happened in the Japanese like that Vegeta Yamcha comment it takes what was a generic Vegeta response and made it funnier, it is not like Vegeta said it in a battle as a side comment. Why not have fun? For all we know there could be instances where the JPN cast are adding things so who really knows what the true script even is?

Schemmel strikes me as professional enough that even if he was tired, he'd still voice Goku to the best of his ability. It's not like VA's rake in the money, and DB related projects feel like a steady stream of income for him.

I think a good dub should exist but it should be identical for the most part and some slight changes are acceptable.

That being said, Schemmel and Sabat should not really change the characters dialogue because I've noticed that it sometimes actually takes me out of it. I enjoy the dub but when it does things like this, which I consider poor decisions, it breaks my immersion (if that makes sense).

A good middle-ground is a competent translation that only differs when a word or cultural context in a joke might not carry over so well into another language.

I'm fine with Schemmel changing Goku's voice up slightly as Goku Black but him changing accents when he goes Rose sounds like a weird concept to me but I guess I'll have to see how it goes.

Not the point and not what I'm saying. They have to translate, write the dialog in a way that makes sense in english and fit the mouth flaps. That doesn't make you a writer? How bout a voice actor acting out the lines. They have to give the lines personality and convince the viewer that the drawing they are looking at is talking. Thats not an art form? Like I said in my original post I agree with what he said to some extent but saying that they aren't writers and artist is pretty ignorant.

In spite of my actions this week, my dissatisfaction with some of the script changes, and the alterations to characters like Magetta, I generally agree, or find them to be on par with the Japanese cast... at least as far the first three arcs go.

Sabat managed to sell that horribly directed "My Bulma" scene not only better than Horikawa, but far better than any of the other foreign dubs I've seen. Schemmel's Goku has so far been pretty incredible, too. Nozawa's still phenomenal, and will always be my first love, but it almost goes without saying that she's a lot older, and obviously not as impactful as she was in her prime -- it's especially clear since I'm watching Z alongside Super at the moment. With the exception of a few duff deliveries, Schemmel's been knocking it out of the park; the goofy side is perfected at this point, and although action-mode Goku is a little too serious in places for my tastes, his screams have been absurdly good.

Rial's doing wonders with Bulma, Chapin's Cabba's perfect, and although Mercer's Hit is wildly different from Yamaji's take, he's got the spirit of the character right, and I really do appreciate that. Likewise, Sinclair and Douglas' Whis and Beerus are as great as always - particularly Douglas who I felt struggled in the Resurrection F movie, and took some time to find his feet in early Super. Heck, after months of fretting about it, Schemmel's take on Goku Black at this point is pretty admirable, too! While I do prefer the Japanese takes on this bunch, the English counterparts are 100% comparable, and are doing terrific jobs so far.

I think that's ultimately why I'm so annoyed by unnecessary changes, and why I embarrassingly lost my cool this week. All the ingredients for a truly faithful and authentic Dragon Ball experience are here, but they're totally let down by bad script writing, strange directorial decisions, and silly voice effects. I don't harp on the dub's shortcomings because I don't like that it exists, or that I'm some hopeless weeby elitist; I pick at it because it's so close to letting both sub and dub fans alike discuss the show on equal footing, but it's let down by bad decisions. I wanna talk about the show, not how 'funny' the "Let's go see Yamcha" addition was to someone. It's like they took a huge leap forward with Kai, then stumbled backwards for Super, forgetting that they're meant to be translating the Japanese experience into English, and not writing their own show and characters like it's the 90s.

It's so nearly where it needs to be... but just not quite, and that's so frustrating knowing how capable they are.
I agree. I think the English dub is near perfect. The voice actors are so talented, and all that's really bringing them down are some of the script changes. Are you still thinking about making animation reviews to go alongside the dub's airing of the Future Trunks arc?
