Maybe they can do that with computer effects. I mean the hobbits in LOTR weren't exactly THAT little in real life.omegacwa wrote:Well, for Nappa all they really need is a big, bald, jacked guy. It really depends on who they cast for Vegeta, because they shouldn't cast a 6'2 Vegeta but have a 5'10" Nappa.
Not that I'm comparing Vegeta to a hobbit...

Were I to venture a guess, I'd say that that's likely the biggest problem most fans have with this movie right now (certainly mine at any rate). It's the one element I've see trashed the most for this movie next to some of the altered designs for some characters (like Muten Roshi).FormallyKnownAsPrince wrote:and I'm kinda iffy on the high school setting.
I'm pretty open to alterations made to an adaptation (many of the looks don't bother me all that much for the most part)... but only within reason. The high school thing is just waaaaaaaaaay too big a deviation from Goku's core concept (backwoods mountain hillbilly kid who knows all of jack squat about anything that has to do even remotely with regular society).
I've always said, if they wanted to do a whole high school bit to pander to the teen crowd, they should've just centered all that around Bulma.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

A lack of Kuririn or Tenshinhan and the presence of high schoolers =/= poor ticket sales. At least not on their own. Those things may piss us off, but the mainstream casual viewers that they will need to draw in to get enough sales to warrant sequals really won't give a damn.
To be honest, I'm dreading the day some dipshit picks up a Dragon Ball manga or DVD and says "hey this must be based on that movie!"
Don't scoff, it happened with X-Men. By professional reviewers with college degrees whom you would expect could be arsed to do 2 seconds of research.

Mostly stuff we know already, like who the cast is, that DragonBall has sold well and continues to do so, blah blah blah. Here's the highlights:Chrono Trigger wrote:So can anyone tell what the scan says ?
The movie premiers on Friday, March 13th, 2009. Apparently it’s going to go on a road show through Japan.
The white text at the top says that before Goku goes out in search of the dragonballs “fierce training awaits him”. Maybe I missed it, but I don't think they've mentioned him training yet.
James Chatwin on his favorite scenes from the movie: “I guess the actions scenes, in the end. They’re amazingly ambitious, and full of scenes I haven’t seen in movies until now. The Kamehameha is pretty challenging.”
Caption to picture of Chatwin in blue gi with sword: “This movie is the story of a boy’s growth. And I really like Goku.” Justin says.
The captain to Kame-sennin wonders what will happen to “that famous scene, the “Pafu-Pafu”, which seems like an appropriate question, considering the magazine.

I suspect this and Funi's forum will get a lot of movie fanatics that try to school us on Dragonball.Onikage725 wrote:A lack of Kuririn or Tenshinhan and the presence of high schoolers =/= poor ticket sales. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

And just for the record, was anyone aware that Joon Park (Yamcha) was once in a S. Korean boyband called G.O.D.?
This is a anti-smoking ad they did... Joon's the one rapping at the beginning with the braids, I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, to be honest I'm entertaining the idea of possibly laying off Daizex and anything else internet+Dragon Ball related once the movie's release date hits... at least until the heat dies down.Onikage725 wrote:To be honest, I'm dreading the day some dipshit picks up a Dragon Ball manga or DVD and says "hey this must be based on that movie!"

What is he referring to?Kunzait_83 wrote:Oh god, I know exactly what you're talking about, and that was beyond stupid.Onikage725 wrote:Don't scoff, it happened with X-Men. By professional reviewers with college degrees whom you would expect could be arsed to do 2 seconds of research.
But on that note, I remember when Steven Spielberg's adaptation of The War of the Worlds came out, and it was amazing how many professional movie reviewers seemed to have no idea it was based on an H.G. Wells book (or rather, a remake of a movie based on his book). The Onion mentioned the original book, but then made fun of the ending monologue, saying it was a cheesy Spielberg addition that ruined the movie, when actually it was taken word for word from the original book. And then volume 2 of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (now there's a comic with a crappy live-action adaptation!) came out a little while later, and was based on Wells' book, but all the Amazon reviewers thought it was based on the Spielberg movie...
But, um, DragonBall...actually, DragonBall will probably be referenced in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volume 3. Heck, Journey to the West was already referenced in volume 2.
But getting back on topic for real, do you really think very many people who hear of DragonBall from this movie will find their way here? Daizenshuu EX is mainly known among older fans, in my experience. I think any new fans who actually manage to find this place will already be educated enough to not be a problem. And really, I want this movie to create a bunch of new fans, because it will only do that if it's actually good to some degree, and I want this movie to be good.

I understand what everyone is saying, but I really doubt that there will be very many people that will have never heard of the anime or manga Dragonball and then see this movie and then find out about the manga or anime and still be dumb enough not to figure out which one came first. I understand with War of the Worlds since the original story was published way back in 1898, but Dragonball (the anime) has only been around in America for 10 or so years now.Kunzait_83 wrote:Oh god, I know exactly what you're talking about, and that was beyond stupid.Onikage725 wrote:Don't scoff, it happened with X-Men. Thanks to the wonderful work of Toonami and Cartoon Network a good portion of Americans either watched the anime, knew about the anime or had a child that watched the anime. Yes the movie will probably lead to a few new members here but I'm pretty sure that they will not go straight to the forums and first go to the actual Daizenshuu EX site, and from there it is pretty hard not to realize that Dragonball has been around for a while, considering the person has been living under a rock for the past two decades and didn't already know.

This is the kind of stuff that sends me into damn near cardiac arrest. Why do people think that it is somehow cool to be ignorant? I hope that given how long both the anime and the manga have been out, this will not happen. I hope and it's all I can do.Onikage725 wrote: To be honest, I'm dreading the day some dipshit picks up a Dragon Ball manga or DVD and says "hey this must be based on that movie!"

I'm looking forward to new people- true, a lot of them will be retarded. But some of them will just need a little information to realize what they missed up until now, and then they can be great fellow fans. I'm only afraid of a flood of badfic > > But half of my main ship won't exist in this movie so it doesn't affect them too much.Kunzait_83 wrote: Yeah, to be honest I'm entertaining the idea of possibly laying off Daizex and anything else internet+Dragon Ball related once the movie's release date hits... at least until the heat dies down.know exactly what you're talking about, and that was beyond stupid.
We've got a lot of educating to do once this movie comes out. Some people will be simply too dumb to be taught, but we'll do what we can.
