Re: Swear words
"Bastard" is an interesting case, really, since on the surface, it's denigrating someone for their parentage (which otherwise tends to be a big taboo). But since we as a culture no longer care whether someone's parents are/were married or not, it tends to only be used in the sense of "a thoroughly unpleasant man" nowadays. Still, there are plenty of perfectly good synonyms, if people bothered to use them. I don't object to it, but to me, it seems lazy.

That's quite a bizarre way of putting it, considering the European release had a more accurate translation (some amusing word choices, sure, but the translation itself was accurate enough) AND didn't get saddled with an embarrassingly poor English dub the way the American one did. If anything got "butchered", it sure wasn't that release.Weejus wrote: Yeah, the 'aunt sallies' thing is from the European version, in which the translators butchered it worse than the average 4Kids production.

That's always been my take on it, too. On one hand, it's an easy two-syllable word, good for lip synching I would imagine, that people will immediately interpret with some kind of charged emotion behind it. On the other, you have the rest of the English language.SaiyaJedi wrote:I don't object to it, but to me, it seems lazy.

To me it feels like they put in 'aunt sallies' in the place of a swear word that was in the Japanese script. Anyway, given that I discovered today that in the UK version of Final Bout the sound test is still in French (the main European country that it was released in, but that's no excuse), I'd take Budokai 1's botch job over Final Bout's nothing.
