Well, Oda is a huge fan of Toriyama. And it was his works that inspired him to become a manga artist in the first place. It doesn't surprise me that he styled his early artwork of the man that inspired him the most.StrawHatPatriot wrote:And yeah, the artsyle for early One Piece definitely was like Dragon Ball.

Re: Art style discussion
So if you guys had to point out a single image where you think Goku looks the best, what would it be? It doesn't matter who drew it and when it was drawn, just find the best in your opinion.

Re: Art style discussion
@StrawHatPatriot, I definitely prefer the style with the rounded eyes. I don't like the Namek arc as much, as it can tend to look a bit awkward compared to the previous arc's style. I really don't like the squared off eyes and noses, and I definitely prefer the rounder look with the sketchy looking muscles rather than the sharp defined look that started to appear during the Namek arc. However, while I prefer Vegeta in the Saiyan arc the most, I really like how he is drawn in the Namek arc; he is still shrimpy but also looks unique. He does look different than when he last appeared in the Saiyan arc but it doesn't look weird like in the Android arc where he has a really short torso and really long legs. And that's the problem since - while you may think that Saiyan arc Goku looks "stumpy" he actually has proper leg and arm proportions in correlation with his body. Toriyama started drawing them thicker and with longer limbs but extremely tiny torsos up through the rest of the manga. Today, he draws the characters, still with long limbs and jutting heads, but instead of being really thick, the characters now are thin with large heads!
Piccolo Jr/Saiyan arc is where Toriyama hit his stride and made things look just right.

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada
