Castor for the win.
Honestly EX, what was the point of re-naming my thread? I had the title in quotes.
Whoa I was wondering where the "Wrath of the Dragon" discussion topic went, so this is the same one... but it was re-named so it confused me :?

Umm... no, I'm not kidding. I never reference a dub title without completing the circle. And it's not like I just changed the topic title... didn't I do it days ago? Why is it a big deal? Are people suddenly not able to continue their discussion? If you take offense to it, go ahead and start up the same discussion on another forum.

Otherwise, back to the topic at hand (which you started yourself), please.

I just think its a little extreme is all. But obviously, you felt some need to change it, when the thread was clearly on the DUB VERSION and not the original. The DUB title is "Wrath of the Dragon" if people wanted to discuss it, they wouldve known that Funimation changed the title.

I honestly dont know why I'm arguing this, it wont do anything.

Re-railing the train that is the threadback onto the track that is the topic (sorry, I'm in one of those moods) here's more of my thoughts:
I liked how FUNi tried to give Gohan and maybe Goku (I forget) an informal way of saying things, like how they called Hoi "gramps" sometimes.

And a slightly more specific version of Castor;s post would be something like:
FUNi's quality = Your dirty car
Dragonbox = Your car after the wash, but with the roof and wheels missing

As clear as those Dragonbox pictures are, I'd much rather have most of the image instead. But to his his own or whatever the saying's supposed to be :).

Well, who knows... fansubs aren't all that accurate, anyway, as some people have already said. >_>;

And, yeah, in reference to the differences between the FUNi and the DragonBox versions... the colors in the DragonBox are a little nicer, but I wouldn't wanna sacrifice part of the picture just for the rest to look good. It's just like my preference for widescreen U.S. movies over their letterbox editions... I wanna see the whole picture! D:

What I think Toei should do is release a version of the movies where the color quality is better AND we get to see the whole picture as it was originally drawn. That'd be very nice. :3
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

I NEED A NEW SIGNATURE D:

I saw the Japanese version recently and I'm glad that it is included in the Funi edition. Does the Japanese audio include the original soundtrack and original soundeffects with English subtitles? I haven't gotten any of the bilingual films yet so I don't know.... :(

Yeap, every FUNimation Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT ( excluding the Ocean dub ) dvd is complete with subtitles, as well as the original audio, which includes the sound effects, voices, and soundtrack.

Yep, Funimation pretty much made up all of Hoi's back story. The Japanese dialogue is extremly vague, stating that Hoi was a member ofd a group of Warlocks that travel from planet to planet, killing things for no apparent reason (not even conquest).

That's kind of a bad comparison as you'll need a roof and wheels for a car. What the Dragon Box chops out really isn't even important in the slightest. Besides, when actually watching the Dragon Box version, you wouldn't even really notice considering how darn gorgeous the quality looks and sounds.

Not to mention, FUNi's prints are somewhat zoomed in. So you're not exactly getting all of the picture.

Yeah, we're talking a very small amount of the sides of the screen, in comparison to the considerable letterbox in the Dragonbox prints. And personally, I don't see anything wrong with FUNi's print of Movie 13. I personally think the quality in it is pretty damn good, video and definitely audio wise (stereo, w00t!). But hey, to each his own.

My apologies if I'm getting off subject. Regarding the movie, I'll start with the dub. While it was kinda cool getting to hear Aaron Dismuke in the role as Minosha (FUNi using an actual kid in a DBZ role), everything else in the dub ... friggin' sucked. I mean c'mon, the writing in this screwed the background of Tapion and Minosha's swords, as well as turned Bulma's present time machine into a "spaceship" that Tapion leaves in, not even promising Trunks he'll visit again. The music was one thing, being pretty damn lousy in comparison to say movie 12, but the writing...good Lord. I haven't seen it this bad since movie 7. To add icing to the cake, "Dragon Fire"? Last I checked, Budokai 3 and even the GT dub settled on "Dragon Fist", so the name change literally makes no sense.

But hey, that's the dub. Japanese version wise, this movie kicked ass! The video quality was utterly awesome, IMO. I'm not someone obsessed with video quality to the point where I'll prefer a cropped movie. Seeing the movie in full-screen was purely phenomenal to me, especially combined with the stereo audio, it was awesome. The only petty glitches I could make out were the "ash burns" that popped up rarely during the feature, which in no way annoyed the hell out of me since these are original prints and all. Moving on to the subtitles, Daimao, you were fantastic, dude! Watching your translation in place of the Anime Labs "Fuckity fuck fuck, Fuck Fuck!" fansub is a great experience in understanding the story, plot, and overall dialogue exchanges much better. Props to ya'.

Just a quick question to anyone who can find these things out, but what is the audio 'bitrate' of the Japanese track on the Region 1 DVD? These things should be around 128KBPS buuuut I'd just like to make sure :)

Thanks!

I totally agree with you all the way, Conan. The full-frame print looks gorgeous to me, and as long as I have the Japanese audio with Daimao's sub titles, that's all I need. I'm sure one day we'll have the widescreen prints on an R1 DVD, but this suits me just fine for the moment.

And yes, the same dub writing problems bugged me too. (Dragon Fire, wtf?) In my case, I liked the incredibly vague backstory of Hildegarn and Tapion, it made it more mysterious. I don't need FUNi to make up some crap for me to "fully understand."
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I'm pretty sure the reason the Funi version of the movie does not look as pretty as you want its becuase well, Funimantion doesn't have the Dragonbox masters.

Anyways the dub wasn't that bad. Except for the whole Dragon Fire fiasco. But I would have loved it if they didn't make up some of the Tapion backstory. Other than that I like it. The Japanese version I still had to mute whenever Goku yelled, she(:D) makes my ears bleed, but I still love the "If I don't do it---Who Will?" line. But the Japenese version is still as I remember it only with better subtitles.

Oh my lord, I just purchased the film today, and what the hey? FUNimation...they've really lost their touch. I will personally shoot the composer for the music, seriously, what in the world was that?...it sounded like a circus. Horrid music, that was basically the biggest thing I had trouble with. Also, Tapion's voice is great when he's calm, or when talking in a smooth, but serious and deep tone, but when he yells and whatnot, ugh.

I had high hopes...godamn did they ever get stomped on.

The japanese version is SUPERIOR to FUNimation this time, without a doubt.

*sigh. what a let down.

Bullcrap. You just refuse to adjust yourself for the greatness that is Masako Nozawa, and will always be that which is Goku, in the truest of incarnations.

Man do I hate hearing people rag on her performance. Just look at my Avatar to see how I feel.

Whoa, that actually hurt me a bit there. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but damn. For some one to complain about the original voice for Goku, especially her screaming, there is something wrong. I would understand if you were complaining about Sean Schemmel screaming, but Masako Nozawa come on. I'm gonna have some coffee now.
