Yeah,
we're talking a very small amount of the sides of the screen, in comparison to the considerable letterbox in the Dragonbox prints. And personally, I don't see anything wrong with FUNi's print of Movie 13. I personally think the quality in it is pretty damn good, video and definitely audio wise (stereo, w00t!). But hey, to each his own.
My apologies if I'm getting off subject. Regarding the movie, I'll start with the dub. While it was kinda cool getting to hear Aaron Dismuke in the role as Minosha (FUNi using an actual kid in a DBZ role), everything else in the dub ... friggin' sucked. I mean c'mon, the writing in this screwed the background of Tapion and Minosha's swords, as well as turned Bulma's present time machine into a "spaceship" that Tapion leaves in, not even promising Trunks he'll visit again. The music was one thing, being pretty damn lousy in comparison to say movie 12, but the writing...good Lord. I haven't seen it this bad since movie 7. To add icing to the cake, "Dragon Fire"? Last I checked, Budokai 3 and even the GT dub settled on "Dragon Fist", so the name change literally makes no sense.
But hey, that's the dub. Japanese version wise, this movie kicked ass! The video quality was utterly awesome, IMO. I'm not someone obsessed with video quality to the point where I'll prefer a cropped movie. Seeing the movie in full-screen was purely phenomenal to me, especially combined with the stereo audio, it was awesome. The only petty glitches I could make out were the "ash burns" that popped up rarely during the feature, which in no way annoyed the hell out of me since these are original prints and all. Moving on to the subtitles, Daimao, you were fantastic, dude! Watching your translation in place of the Anime Labs "Fuckity fuck fuck, Fuck Fuck!" fansub is a great experience in understanding the story, plot, and overall dialogue exchanges much better. Props to ya'.
