Hi!

This is not an off-topic forum or thread.

To bring things back in perspective, I'd love to point out the utter hypocrisies spouted by individuals who have an active account on an internet message board dedicated to a children's cartoon that ended over a decade ago in Japan and have the nerve to continue to post on said forum with the "truth" that anyone who spends an arbitrary amount of money (which they've decided upon, of course) on the very same show they're posting on a forum about...

You see where this is going.

DragonBall has and forever will be a "children's show". What does that mean? Every piece of merchandise is created with some sort of target demographic in mind; even the most general "mass-market" product has some main demographic they target. With DB, that main target is shonen... young boys. It's not targeted at adults. It's not targeted at pre-schoolers. It's not targeted at college kids. It's for the young boys that the rest of the shounen genre epitomizes and is geared towards.

Does that mean that someone else can't enjoy it? Of course not. There are plenty of adults and children alike that enjoy Disney's Aladdin. Is it somehow NOT a kid's movie because some adults like it? Of course not. That just means there's something magical about it. Just like DB.

It is a fact, plain and simple, that anything that's ever entered the pages of Shonen Jump is and forever will be aimed at that young boy demographic. What's so great about older properties is that so many years later, that initial demographic has grown up and now has a disposable income. They remember the things they loved from their childhood and either want to remember them all over again, or maybe even catch up on them and see some of the stuff they missed.

It's the same reason I purchase the 1990's Ninja Turtles cartoon box sets. It's not like that show is geared towards a 25-year-old professional adult. Can it still be enjoyed? Of course. Is that enjoyment primarily the result of a fond reminiscence? Of course it is.

My sentiments exactly. It's a children's cartoon, but it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy it. Especially if you were a child when you did watch it, and it holds a sentimental value to you.

I really hate it when someone says "yeah well it was meant to be for adults anyway." No it was not.

Didn't FUNimation say the Uncut Season Boxsets were aimed at "the nine year olds born every day", or something to that effect?

Uncut? For nine year olds? In the States? No way. It can' t be. That would be a lawsuit.

That's what they said. One of their many "justifications" for cropping the image, was that it would look "cool" for the younger viewers, and then said that "There's a nine-year old born every day."

So four hours to go and no bids so far...I don't really use e-bay, so is this sort of thing normal? Is everyone just waiting for the last minute to slip their bids in, or is there really nobody willing to buy these?

If nobody else is going to buy them, I might just have to do it myself...you know, for purely moral reasons. I mean, somebody has to help this poor man survive after loosing his job.

(What would happen if nobody did bid on them by the time of the deadline, anyway?)

Well in the end I haven't seen too many people over the age of 14 take this anime too seriously if they have not seen this as a kid. I mean there are talking animals, green men with antenna, and people with the power to destroy the entire universe. The dub doesn't help either when it further exasperates this by giving everybody the most stereotypical voices out there (see #13, Namu, and Vegeta). I don't see how I could take something of that nature seriously if I wasn't a kid regardless of it being dubbed or subbed.

Again it's DB/Z is a shounen manga and anime series and it will always have the young boy demographic most mind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shounen. The other part is this, there's something called a cultural difference. However in the end, I don't see too many people raving how much the uncut versions are really that much different to the edited versions in some cases they're pretty much the same thing. Well, apart from what Funimation deemed as "extreme violence" there's not much of anything that really is different. They say "Damn", "Bastard", and "____ the Hell." in Japanese and those are considered of PG level if anything. And the dub has less language than the original. The only time I ever remember them swearing is in Seasons 1/2 but there's virtually no language in the dub.

So I don't got too much after that, but it's been said before by Mr. VegettoEX, Dragonball was made with the young boy demographic in mind. If that doesn't seem right to anybody then I can't help you.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

No I agree. Just here in the US, the only reason that "Ages 13+" sticker is put, is because of the, lets face it, useless middle fingers (they're taken as jokes, they very rarely express real anger), Japanese subtitle language (bastard, hell, etc), and some little things that parents might find to be too uncomfortable for their children to watch. Then again, the edited versions are TVY7, for 7 year olds and up.

I want them so badly, but I just can't afford them now.

And damn did this thread go off on a tangent.

Well what can you really say about two Dragon Boxes being up for sale on Ebay? "Great!" Okay that's about it. You can't really have a discussion. So as long as people are respectful to each other and courteous, I don't think that it's that big of a deal that it's "off topic" although I don't see what topic you can talk about. Technically the topic is about Dragon Boxes being up on Ebay. What's there to talk about?

I have to say though, I'm very shocked that nobody bidded on them. Maybe in the last 10 seconds, everyone will swarm in like flies on a piece of...well, you get it. Anyway, I just feel bad for this guy because he is selling something that means a lot to him because he lost his job and nobody's taking to it. On one hand, maybe it's saving the collection for him and hopefully luck will turn around for him, but on the other, having money to survive is a little more important than having the Dragon Box.

See I think it depends on the translation. I've heard "kuso", "kisama", and "chikusho" translated to many different insults. Some translaters make them tame some make them harsh

Like the original fansub of Movie 13 where Vegeta gives a speach with nothing but swears.

Call that to Gero when he was searching for him in the mountains.

Hey guys,

Don't know if you're even still talking about this, but I thought I'd let you know that I was the one who bought the Volume 2 set. Big props to Tyro for pointing out the auction; my Z Box collection is now complete! :D I'm just surprised no one else bidded on it... I was ready for some stiff competition.

Looks like Volume 1 went unsold however. Maybe he'll relist?

Such a hard decision... :x
Indeed it is! I intend to surprise my two brothers with this Christmas Day (provided it's arrived by that time)... just not sure whose name(s) should go on the tag.

Congratulations, Acid Reign! I know it's silly, but for some reason I'm happy that a forum member got it. I wanted to bid on both of them myself, but...not really the funds right now, you know? It seems from this thread that a lot of people had the same problem, which may explain the lack of bids.

With the sinking dollar value, 600$ currently equals 3300 NOK. That's about 15 DVDs, 5 video games, or 40 McDonalds lunches.

Add in the fact that most of these episodes aren't going to be available with subtitles in an acceptable format... yes, I'm willing to pay 600$ for that set. I hope he relists it.

Plus I just got my student loan :P

I coud probably sell my FUNi Freeza DVDs for about 20$ each to Norwegian fans too. Would partly pay for most of this set.

And hey, I paid around 200$ for a Sailor Moon season set thing back when ADV was releasing those.

Off-topic, but I have to mention it.

I'd just like to say that I'd totally buy those. Though, isn't 20$ a bit much for a used DVD?
