I mean just looking at that one fan's conversation with Watanabe that's all he was talking about, power levels.

Just because many fans miss the point of the series doesn't mean the rest of us are obliged to humor them.

Basically, DB revolves around action (and gags), but having lots of action is quite different from having a consistant, all-encompassing system for how characters stack up against each other in terms of strength. In fact, these two things are often at odds, because being too strict about power-scaling can get in the way of story-telling. Toriyama says in Ultimate Battle Collection that his ideas about character strength would constantly shift as he was writing the story, and certainly nobody at Toei ever seemed very concerned about consistency in this area either, as has often been noted. They are all primarily concerned with creating exciting battle scenes (and the occasional poop joke), not in portraying some inviolable hierarchy of character strength.

And I think overall DB fans share these priorities. Doesn't the extreme prevelance of DB fighting games versus the comparatively small number of DB RPGs suggest that by and large fans care more about the characters fighting than about detailed systems determining the power relationship between those characters?

I think the difference in DB happened around the Piccolo Daimao arc, if you compare earlier arcs (Pilaf, 21st Budokai, and Red Ribbon) to arcs post Piccolo Daimao and onward you will notice a stark contrast in the tone and genre shift in the series. The gags/humor elements are significantly lessened while the battle drama is increased and focused more to push the story forward. DB in my opinion didn't regain the humor and action mixed elements until the Buu arc since Piccolo Daimao to end of Cell arc was pretty much "Darker and edgier" era of DB, while the arcs before Piccolo Daimao + Buu and potentially BoGs feature were pretty much good ole fashion light heart fun and games mostly with a little seriousness tossed end. Ironically, there actually is an inviolable hierarchy of character strength through out all of DB since power ups are needed to make the main characters relevant to advance the plot in the very next arc repeatedly until the end of the series and the power levels issue is still continue in the BoGs movie as well.

The majority of DB as a whole is a battle shonen series that focuses heavily on battles and power levels hand in hand. Is that a bad thing? Hell no, DB is one of the most awesome battle shonen in the world if not the ultimate battle shonen series along side the other great ones before and during its serialization that help make the battle shonen genre what it is today. Though I think if we are going to continue this discussion further we're going to need to make a new thread dedicated to it since I prefer not to clutter this thread with off topic discussion until the movie premieres since we will be able to do better power and story comparison by then.

If you peak in any sport, i.e. bodybuilding it doesn't mean that you maintain it indefinite, it takes time to gain true size, then to cut to levels of only 6-7% for a competition, it can be maintained for a while though good diet and training, but not forever, it's the exact same thing with strength in martial arts. I admit it's less noticeable, it took me a long time in martial arts to see my ability decrease but it's due to less intense training, I don't really get involved in these sort of fan arguements but I figured it was worth throwing my two cents in here, just because a Z fighter was at a certain level or whatever you want to call it at a certain time it doesn't mean that they would hold it. I would love to see cell come back and fight Gohan a few years after the cell games when Chi Chi has had him do nothing but homework ever since

Yes please, you are allowed to spoil stuff. All I really want to know is whether or not SSJ3 Vegeta is in there and what SSJG looks like. In fact I think it would be a good idea to start a Battle of Gods spoilers thread after you've seen it so no one has to see the spoilers if they dont want to.

Someone just pointed out in the 2ch thread that the lettering used for ゴッド is the same as the "to" in Kakarrotto and even though it's not kanji, the "go" part is shared in Goku, so that may be why they went with god instead of kami. It could also be a coincidence, but it's a cool coincidence, I think.
