Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
The Buu one says that the seal was released on Majin Buu, a being of destruction and slaughter created by a dark mage. As Buu powers up repeatedly, Earth's warriors fall against him one after another, until Goku embarks on a final battle with the whole universe on the line. The blurb is Goku telling Buu to be reborn as a good person.
And so, at the end of a long, long battle, peace was finally restored to Earth. However...
A few years after the battle with Majin Buu, there was a being who surpassed everything.
The Beerus one basically summarizes the plot of the movie up to the point where the God of Destruction snaps, but obfuscates what he's after in order to be dramatic (and also because Super Saiyan God hadn't been revealed yet when this pamphlet was distributed to cinemas and stores). The blurb is a quote from Beerus: "Before creation, there is destruction".
And so, at the end of a long, long battle, peace was finally restored to Earth. However...

I love when Dragon Ball ads get all poetic "a being of destruction and slaughter created by a dark Mage..." Sure sure that's what he is but I mean c'mon he was turning people into candy

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread

I know the whole thing is translated, but I was wondering what it said inside the green, orange, and purple columns?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Looking for some brief translations, both directions, for how they're used in regards to Dragon Ball. I searched the forums and haven't seen these really discussed and when they are, it is either only a partial discussion or the choice of translation keeps changing.
Furnace of Eight Trigrams = Hakkaro?
Mountain of Five Elements = Gogyōzan?
Taijō Rōkun = Great Old Exalted One or Grand Supreme Elder Lord?

They're "Freeza Arc", "Cell Arc", and "Majin Buu Arc", with a "Movies" branch over to Broli. The purple bubbles, apart from Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3, also feature "Variations" (for the variants of regular Super Saiyan introduced in the Cell arc), "Broli-Type" (what's generally referred to as "Legendary Super Saiyan"), and "Gohan-Type" (his "Ultimate" power-up from the Elder Kaiōshin).DBZGTKOSDH wrote:http://i48.tinypic.com/1038s2p.jpg

(And I feel like I shouldn't need to add this, but for the same of clarity, the branches appear to indicate where along the timeline the form was seen, not necessarily their relative strength.)

It's Hakkerou for that first one.

Can someone please tell me what this caption is saying?

It looks like the book is saying knowledge is more important than physical power (ie the scales tipping WIN!!) so I wanted to know what it actually says. I know the rest of the page is translated somewhere else so I apologize in advance if this has already been addressed. The paragraph to the right would be great too but I am grateful for whatever anyone can provide. Thanks again!

I glanced at that topic too before posting here. I just didn't really see anything while skimming it, and then when I got to the actual explanations in the THE EIGHT TRIGRAMS AND FIVE ELEMENTS section, the mountain and furnace parts weren't covered. xDHerms wrote:I go over that stuff here.
With the Taijō Rōkun part, I just wasn't sure which translation to go with, as you have a different choice every time I search your posts. Like with that topic, or in the History of Ever... =P

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
@Kakarot88: In the interview question, Toriyama says that for Goku, Kame-sennin's greetings and study training were the harshest. So the scales illustrate this, showing the studying as "heavier" than the gravity training, and the caption repeats Toriyama's statement that for Goku studying is the harshest training.
@TheDevilsCorpse: "Taijou-Roukun" is one of those somewhat convoluted titles, so I guess that's why the way I translate it tends to fluctuate. It breaks up like this:
太/tai: extreme, very
上/jou: upper, superior
老/rou: old, elder
君/kun: lord, sovereign, sir
So put those together and it's something like "extremely superior elder lord", or however you'd want to phrase it so that it's not too unwieldy.
The tricky part, which I only found out a little while ago, is that originally at least the "Rou" is actually supposed to just be short for Laozi (Roushi in Japanese; and no, it's not that kind of roushi, the kanji aren't entirely the same). So the title could be translated (per my Chinese dictionary) as "Most Exalted Lord Lao". But for the DB character, the "Rou" presumably just means "elder", since of course her actual name is "Annin" rather than Roushi/Laozi.

Toriyama adds that he's afraid of heights, so climbing Karin Tower would be the hardest training for him personally.

Yep. Here's the full question-and-answer, if anyone's interested.Herms wrote:Toriyama adds that he's afraid of heights, so climbing Karin Tower would be the hardest training for him personally.
Incidentally, the notes at the bottom of that scan are for the previous question, about how Super Saiyan came about. The notes are about Toriyama's then-assistant, and the process of blacking-in areas during inking.Super Exciting Guide: Story wrote:How did you come up with the idea of training?
With regards to training, there wasn't anything in particular I used as a reference. I think it was, comparatively speaking, full of very orthodox things that anyone could come up with. There are training scenes in the film Drunken Master [see Note 5], as well; I suppose that part also became a reference for me. To Goku, Kame-Sen'nin's training in manners and studies was probably the toughest. As for me personally… I'm afraid of heights, so there's absolutely no way I'd train by climbing Karin Tower.
Note 5: Drunken Master
A 1978 Hong Kong movie starring Jackie Chan. A punk kid picks a fight with a hired assassin and has the tables turned on him; in order to win in a rematch, he trains day after day, and masters a martial art where he gets stronger the more intoxicated he becomes.
