If Schemmel had gotten the part first Toriyama'd hear his voice.... whats your point? I have noclue what the art has to do with it (I'm thinking visuals in the anime, is that whaat you're talking about)?JulieYBM wrote:How'd you get that? Gee, it sure did sound like that to me when I was watching the scene where he was on his way to Snake Way. He doesn't have a deep voice in the same way as when Schemmel or Corlett are voicing him and he doesn't sound girly like Bulma's or Chichi's voice. But to say Nozawa's Goku sounds deep and doesn't sound girly at all is completely false. The Time Traveller wrote:DB Goku and DBZ Goku sound completely different, it's not like she's doing the same high pitch voice, Z Goku doesn't really sound like a woman as much as dubbies think, when you're REALLY watching it at least.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Nozawa? There's that word again, 'girly'... it's not like it sounds like a woman at all, but it doesn't sound like a man either, to say he sounds "girly" is like saying Bart Simpson sounds like a vally girl talking like a baby.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:But to say Nozawa's Goku sounds deep and doesn't sound girly at all is completely false.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I don't know if you read my earlier post or not because I think I discussed the issue fairly objectively, and I would like to know your opinion of that. But I don't see how "the original is correct because it came first" mentality is close-minded or silly. To paraphrase Mike, we're talking about a state of being here. The show is the show. An adaptation of the show is not. Like I said earlier, it's open for some debate whether the Japanese version or the English version is a truer or better adaptation of the manga, but it's not up for debate whether or not the Japanese version or the English version IS the show.jjgp1112 wrote:

Let me make an English-language analogy. Say you're a big fan of Star Wars. Over in France, it was dubbed so that Luke Skywalker was renamed Jimbo Groundtripper and was voiced by Pierre Escargot. Millions of French fans have fallen in love with this dub, and to a lot of them, it's all they know. Does that make it as legitimate as the actual film? If I'm writing information on Star Wars, and I list the actor who played Luke Skywalker, does good old Pierre get the same recognition as Mark Hamill? No. Because this fictitious French version is no more actual Star Wars than the DBZ dub is DBZ. It has nothing to do with preference. Even if I thought that Sean Schemmel was 100 times the Goku that Nozawa Masako was, I'd still say the same thing, although I would note that my preference is to Schemmel.

I said "doesn't sound girly at all", which means she sounds a bit girly, not girly like Bulma or Videl. The Time Traveller wrote:There's that word again, 'girly'... it's not like it sounds like a woman at all, but it doesn't sound like a man either, to say he sounds "girly" is like saying Bart Simpson sounds like a vally girl talking like a baby.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:But to say Nozawa's Goku sounds deep and doesn't sound girly at all is completely false.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
"Girly" is subjective, but "deep" is not. It certainly is deep, especially for a woman, and probably deeper than some men at times (including Schemmel, who isn't exactly Barry White here).Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:He doesn't have a deep voice in the same way as when Schemmel or Corlett are voicing him and he doesn't sound girly like Bulma's or Chichi's voice. But this is getting a little off-topic, since, as far as I know, Nozawa's not going to be in the FUNi dub.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I think what he's getting at is that Toriyama drew the majority of the series with Nozawa's voice floating around in his mind. So you could say that this possibly had an influence in the way he drew and thought about Goku. If in some odd alternate universe Schemmel had gotten the part first, maybe Toriyama would have heard his voice while drawing Goku (but then again maybe not; Toriyama has never mentioned hearing any of the other characters' anime voices when drawing them, and attributes it happening with Goku to Nozawa simply being that good, so it's not certain this would have automatically happened no matter who first voiced Goku). But perhaps if Toriyama had Schemmel's voice in mind while drawing the manga, Goku would have developed differently. An interesting thing to think about.verto wrote:If Schemmel had gotten the part first Toriyama'd hear his voice.... whats your point?

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I've heard Ms. Nozawa's female character voices and they're different than her voice for Goku. The few I've listened to are the blue fairy from Sleeping Beauty, Dr. Kureha from One Piece, Sanae from the first Precure series and I can say all three distinctly sound different from Goku, with Ms. Nozawa's Sanae leaning the most towards Bulma's way of speaking.

Um. Nozawa isn't american.
K? Argument over.
It'd be awesome if they tried something different with Vegeta and Piccolo's voices, but they aint.
Is there anyone else talking about the episodes they saw elsewhere, like a blog or something? Cos that's the stuff I'm curious to see. All the dirt.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Yes, and the original/correct version is the Manga. As far as the Anime goes the Japanese version is the original and correct. But in the grand scheme of the DragonBall Universe, the Manga is the original. Leaving the interpretation on voices up to each individual.Kendamu wrote:You can like whatever you want, but the original is the correct version. Think of it like this...Stuff like Superman and Batman have gotten multiple incarnations over the years. From live action actors to voice actors in cartoons. But in the end, the comics are the original. So stuff like voices are left up to each individual. People don't say that the first ever voice of Superman (Live Action or Cartoon) is the CORRECT voice just because it came first. Because it ultimately doesn't matter that much. What voice you hear coming out of the characters mouth ultimately makes no difference as long as the character him/herself is the same.

Say, I wonder if we'll be talking about the Dragon Ball Kai dub in this thread again at some point.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

So, what you're trying to say is that the Big Green dub is just as valid as the Japanese version? And you're telling me this based on you twisting my example in a completely different direction that had nothing to do with the message behind my example?Gozar wrote:Yes, and the original/correct version is the Manga. Go tell a bunch'a Japanese kids watching Kai and Japanese adults who grew up on the original anime (and manga!) that the deep Superman/Lion-O voice saying, "Come, magic cloud!" is just as correct as Nozawa and that Piccolo's name is actually Big Green because it's all open to interpretation and get back to me with what they think about that.
Also, get on the horn with FUNi and tell them to get back to dubbing the way they used to with all their inaccurate lines. It is all open to interpretation, after all.
Sorry, I just don't see it your way. Chris Sabat may be Vegeta's American voice, but it isn't his voice. Ryo Horikawa is. If I'm wrong, I guess that means Mickey Mouse is just as valid sounding like a chain-smoking old granny with a thing for pick-up lines best suited for a gay bar as he is with his high-pitched voice that he's had for generations.

The last 2 pages don't count, as they are stupid and beating a dead horse.
Back to the dub,
Who here thinks kikoho will be said at any point? I know we've been guaranteed a makankosappo, and kienzan, but those both don't make any appearances until Z.
So maybe they'll keep it lame old Tri-Beam, seeing as that's what it was in the Dragon Ball dub. WHICH, by the way, I think is the same reason they aren't referring to our main character as Son Goku. So it can be more consistent with the Dragon Ball dub.
Thoughts? Anybody?

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
You do have a valid point. I was more under the assumption that they would treat this dub like a separate entity rather than attempt to tie it in with the dubs of the other shows. I mean, really, in terms of the TV shows, you really can't necessarily replace Z with Kai as some of that filler actually has consequences in GT (like the Tsufru-jin--they didn't keep that flashback right?). Granted, with their quite inconsistent method so far of changing some things to be accurate but keeping other, just as inaccurate things intact, you might very well be right. It seems like a crapshoot to me, so it might very well be Tri Beam. I'm hoping it's Kikoho. They seem to be doing pretty well with attacks so far, so let's hope there's some consistency to it.ohaimynameiserik wrote:The last 2 pages don't count, as they are stupid and beating a dead horse.
