Garlic Jr Saga Discussion Thread.

Post by Kingdom Heartless » Sun Apr 12, 2009 12:08 am

I've noticed this saga is almost universally despised. I'd like to see some detailed reasons why you personally don't like it.

I mean, this isn't me being defensive of the saga. It's by no means a good one, but as far as filler goes, to me it's far from the bottom of the barrel.

I'm just curious to see some well written reasons why you don't like it.

Besides the usual problem with filler in DB, i.e. going on forever, I don't really see the problem. If anything, it's excusable filler as it doesn't mess with manga canon like when they insert things into Cell Saga and such.

I don't really mind it. The only real problem I have with it is the fact that it can't actually fit in the timeline.

And what was the director smoking when they came up with the inside of Kami's Lookout?

I think my problem is more recent than anything.

The villains remind me of vampires.

Vampires now remind me of Twilight.

I fucking despise Twilight.

Nuff said.

I really like the saga. It's just the Kami/Popo stuff that I hate.

Also, the saga does feel like its full of missed opportunities, in terms of giving characters likes Yamcha and Tenshinhan and Roshi a chance to shine.

Just remind yourself that the characters in Twilight are hardly vampires. :P

I can't think of anything about this saga that I just disliked. But...whenever I get to it, I just want it to be over so I can watch the rest of the story. Most times I just skip over the Garlic Jr saga.

I guess to sum it up you could just say that it doesn't hold my attention. Or to put it less politely, it bores the hell out of me.

That makes a lot of sense. There is nothing explicitly wrong with it, it just doesn't have the same magic that DB has, and you want it to be over with.....

Yeah... I guess that's my only problem. When I watched it, I basically wanted it to be over so I could get to Trunks and such.

But unlike filler such as Bulma and the crab and fake Namek, I don't think it's void of any good parts.

Perfectly summed up. It's just boring, especially when you know what's on the way afterwards.

The opening scene of Garlic Jr. is one of my favorites in the series, the part with Gohan running around in the wilderness, hunting for fish, escaping the saber tooth tiger. It's a great transition, and does a very nice job of showing that life's returned to normal as things were prior to the Saiyan Saga. It has a very clear message: "Rejoice! Freeza vs. Goku is finally over! No more of that Planet Namek, either" (Which was interesting at first but overstayed its welcome). It has some great music, too, using a track which was sadly abandoned shortly afterwards, and in general is just a very bright and attractive scene.

Also, major props to the writers for giving Unigame an important role for the first time since episode three of Dragon Ball. Between this and defending Marron sometime during the Imperfect Cell era, I think the writers had a major hard-on for Unigame during this middle stretch of Dragon Ball Z.

With that said, the fighting was much more boring than the peaceful segments, and I did end up wishing, as Avenger said, it would hurry up and end so that I could begin with Cell already.

Personally? I love it. The main heroes were my three favorite at the time, they got to kick ass on their own, and Piccolo got to show off what a sexy genuis he was yet again. I'm sold.

This is a good point. The fact that Kuririn and Piccolo get to do so much should make me like it more. I just tend to lose interest before they really get to do anything...

Yeah, Piccolo playing the "Magnificent Bastard" card with Krill-dog was awesome, as well as Gohan impaling that one guy, but still, aside from that, I was bored as hell.

Wow. You just ruined DBZ for me, now every time I see the characters, I'm going to see vampires, so I'm going to see Twilight, which I also hate :D

It started out okay, it really did. The "everything is back to normal" scenes are nice, Maron is relatively funny, and the henchman battle is enjoyable. Problem is, it soon turns into a soulless, boring ass battle that goes nowhere and drags on way way WAY too long, with an unsatisfactory conclusion. And the Kuririn/Maron episodes between the Garlic Jr. and Trunks episodes... what the HELL was up with that? I mean, seriously, it's just bizarre and maks no sense (and the underwater stuff reminds me ofbulma and the crab, which is not a plus).

Garlic Jr.'s new voice sounds weird to me, too. Doesn't fit anywhere near as well as his original one, and doesn't sound anywhere near it either.

Yeah, having a weaker villain without Goku and Vegeta to help was a good idea, but it could have been executed a whole lot better.

Who or what is Unigame?
