Opinions of Nathan Johnson's Score.

Post by Budokai23 » Tue Apr 14, 2009 7:40 pm

What did you think of Nathan Johnson's music for the first 67 episodes. Personally I didn't like it. It's just so random and there's only like 2 good pieces of music. I can't believe FUNI thought of replacing Kikuchi for him. So what do you think? :D
Aka gtadbzman.

Didn't like it. Has nothing on Kikuchi's or Faulconer's, though is better than Menza's GT score.

I liked Menza's GT score a little better. But the Japanese music in GT kicks ass.

I didn't really like it. It's not Faulconer. Granted, it was alright though.

It's ok, it has the saturday morning cartoon vibe to it, if a little too dark sounding in some places. The eye catcher and ending song are really "WTF" though.

He's worse than Menza. Seriously. They shouldn't have even bothered and just used the original score for those re dubbed episodes.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If they were gonna use only the original score they should mix it a bit better. It's hard to listen to it with headphones on with parts the music floating from one ear to another. I got fed up with it and switched to the Nathan track.

I honestly have no opinion other than "Didn't like it", mostly because it was bland enough that I don't even remember anything, at least I can remember tiny pieces of Menza's horrible GT stuff, even if it's only 2 second snippets. Neither of them hold a candle to Faulconer's stuff. (Of course, Faulconer is still nowhere near Kikuchi in most cases.)

Also, as far as Johnson's music goes, I only heard him for the first 21 episodes though on the UUE, as once we had the season sets I was free to never have to hear him again watching the dub.

The only thing I remember about that score is the peaceful music played toward the beginning of Episode 1 at Goku's house. The rest of it was so mediocre and non-memorable. I missed the UUE airings on Cartoon Network, so I only heard that score in the episodes released on the original UUE DVDs - when Seasons 1 and 2 came out, I generally watched it with the Japanese BGM.

In my opinion:

Faulconer > Menza (movie 6 & 12) > Levy (original dub) > Johnson > Menza (everything else)

Shunsuke Kikuchi >>>>> Bruce Faulconer > Megaman Score >> Shuki Levy>>>> Albanian Dub Score = Nathan Johnson = Mark Menza >>>>> Freatured Bands

Nathan Johnson's score is just bad. I especially dislike the shit played while Ginyu Force's first Special Fighting Pose.

I know. Also there is just no emotion in his music.

I liked the Saturday morning cartoon feel it had better than Fulconer's stuff. I actually have a soft spot for the Shuki Levy stuff and that also sounds Saturday morning cartoon-like. Fulconer's score was too-far departed from Shuki Levy's stuff. So the music in the redub of Seasons 1 & 2 felt a bit more familiar in tone to me and that's why I liked it.

In the end, though, I like the Japanese music the best for two simple reasons:

- Reason #1
- Reason #2

The score is just....boring and dull. There's nothing special to it. It is generic elevator music.

Compare this to the wonderful Shunsuke Kikuchi, EVEN Bruce Faulconer, and there's nothing here to note.

I am probably one of the only people who like the Nathan Johnson score. I think it's better than Faulconer.

^ this. Also his Movie 13 score is pretty awesome.

Though Kikuchi's score is still superior.

I think it's rubbish, but of course I also loathe the Faulconer score.

However I will say that when I spot checked the movie 13 dub, there were several musical cues that were actually quite good, the moment where Tapion asks Trunks to kill him springs to mind, I've actually been meaning to watch it through to see if it was just a one-off, considering how painful I found his work on the UUE's to be.
