Saban DBZ Score! Recycled Power Rangers music?

Post by Levlik » Wed May 13, 2009 11:37 pm

As many know, back in 1996, Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball Z was handled almost entirely by Saban and in turn, the score was done by Shuki Levy, who did the music for pretty much every Saban show and dubbed anime (X-Men, Samurai Pizza Cats, Digimon, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Big Bad Beetleborgs to name a handful). A few years ago a friend of mine who's a huge Power Rangers/Super Sentai fan told me he read that some MMPR music made it into DBZ. Although they were scored similarly, I never really thought it was true until I heard this:

Now, it's been a while since I've watched any episodes of the old Saban DBZ dub but I swear I remember hearing those songs used in the first minute of that in Dragon Ball Z.

Can anyone confirm this or is it just in my head? I've personally never heard anything about the old Power Rangers score being used in DBZ and I'm sure someone would have noticed years ago if it were true.

Ron Wasserman I only remember anything from 1:09 and onwards, which definitely was not in Dragon Ball

I recognize that first song from DBZ. Maybe they did re-use Power Ranger songs.

EDIT: It's the last song in "The World's Strongest Team" on the DBZ soundtrack.

Damn we've been having lots of plagiarism from both the Japanese and English versions(Ocean and Funimation), its incredible.

Well, it's not really plagiarism considering Shuki Levy did the background music for both shows (Dunno why the Youtube video credits only Ron Wasserman on the MMPR music. He did the lyrical songs but not the BGM) and the two shows were scored pretty similarly, using the same synthesizers and whatnot.

haha that is interesting!
I never did watch MMPR.
I still have a soft spot for "Rock the Dragon" (whoever did that one)!

I was watching MMPR when I was 6 years old, so never noticed that music. Actually only thing I like on Saban's OST is Trouble on Arlia, because I really don't like this score from Kusei Mahehi too much for it's creativity. All of these tracks sounds pretty much the same and have some chaotic atmosphere.
