Compare American and Japanese Heroes

Post by SSJ2bardock » Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:22 pm

In another topic Freeza Heika said that "Broly and the Hulk are practically twins". This got me thinking, what other characters from the series have comparable American counterparts? Is Goku really like Superman or do they not compare when looked at closer? Is Kuririn like Batman in that he may be weaker physically, but more cunning than the rest?

Thoughts on the matter and your own comparisons...[/b]

I would consider Vegeta to be like Wolverine in some ways. Now I'm not huge into the X-Men universe, but from what I understand, he was taken against his will and made into an animal to serve their needs only to get out later get out and be an anti-hero. Vegeta was also taken in by Freeza and forced to suit Freeza's needs only to get out and seek revenge and later become an anti-hero.

In physical stature, yeah, but the Hulk is actually a well-developed character, with a personality beyond "KAKAROT!"

Wolverine's past has been rewritten and retconned so many times even hardcore fans would get a headache, but you're fairly close.

I'd sooner compare Goku, mainly in personality, to Rocky Balboa than Superman. 8)

I'll also compare Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel to Vegeta, they're a lot alike. Seriously.

So does that sort of make Yamcha like the Aqua Man? A cool character in concept, but one who never really does anything....

I always thought Bulma and Princess Leia were very alike. Both want to be in control but are constantly being pushed aside by the heroes who have their own agenda. Although weak both aren't afraid to give the villains (and heroes) a piece of their mind and while somewhat bitchy are kind at heart. They are both often fed up with the heroes uninformed nature and aren't half bad with projectile weapons.

( Okay fine she may not be a super hero but...close enough.)

From the handful of stuff I've been picking up from Ultimate Spider-Man, Venom seriously seems like the series' Brolly. Most fair-weather fans immediately connect that character to the series, but some of the more "hardcore" fans don't really take that well to the character since he doesn't exactly define what the series is about no matter what fair-weather fans may say.

I would agree they both have a good training ethic, love to fight and slow in the head.
I'll also compare Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel to Vegeta, they're a lot alike. Seriously.

I would say that Vegeta is more like Spike, Angel was a pussy.

So are you saying in essence that real Dragonball fans would not like Broli?
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I think he's saying that Broly doesn't really represent the whole series. He is purely an embodiment of they action aspect of Dragonball, but there are so many more facets of the series that he fails at getting through. He's a character people can latch onto for what he does have, but there is so much else that can be admired about the series by a fan besides the action.

Err, he was saying Spike was on Buffy and Angel (James Marsters joined the cast for Season 5 of the latter, since Buffy had already ended) and is similar to Vegeta ;p

I wouldn't classify Angel as a pussy anyway. If you've seen the 2nd season of Buffy (which, granted, is the Angelus persona), or the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Angel (with his war against Wolfram and Hart, and in season 3 when he goes nuts after his son is ________) in particular, I think you'd agree he isn't a pussy by any stretch.

Yeah they are both annoying and boy scouts.
Gokû's far from being a boy scout and Superman's only annoying if you disaprove of people fighting for the law and protection of innocent people.

Maybe Superman is a Dick paints him in a bad light, but I really can't picture Superman as a boy scout, so much as an epic jerkass and complete unsympathetic bastard.

Well, he annoyed the heck out me when he continuosly lectured Wonder Woman for killing Max Lord instead of saying "thank you." Max had Superman under control and on the rampage. He beats up Batman and attacks Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman asked Lord how to free Superman (under influence of the Lasso of Truth). Max spoke the truth and she did the deed. Her thanks for saving Batman's life, Superman's life, defending herself, and stopping whatever other carnage Superman would have comitted? Shunning and endless lectures from Superman and to an extent even Batman.

Even Goku would have said "thanks pal, I know that was a tough call but you made the right choice."
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Exactly. XD

I would say though, from Spike's perspective, Angelus was definitely a Freeza-type figure, while Angel was more along the lines of a Kakarrot-rival for him. Especially in Season 5 of Angel. Hell, we could probably make a dozen comparisons between Spike and Vegeta.

The fact that it's a martial arts story in the same vein as a TON of martial arts flicks out of Japan, I can't really think of a comparison between a Dragonball character and an American superhero.

All the above choices frankly seem inadequate or not quite right. We're talking characters made from different molds, different schools of thought, any comparison feels erroneous.

I watched Buffy religiously and Spike was my favorite character even when he was the main villain. I watched Angel minus the fervor that I had for Buffy. To me Angel did not get on Buffy level of enjoyable until Spike appeared in the final television season, so yes I know what I am talking about, even the Angelus persona did not impress me. Illyria/Fred was more intimidating than Angel/Angelus. I agree you can make comparison between Spike and Vegeta all day.

I dunno. Neck-snapping, spindle in the eye, set you on fire Angel/us seemed a bit intimidating to me. Illyria was a demon God who looked down on everyone and took the most direct approach possible (look at how she saved Gunn), whereas Angelus was 'just' a vampire with a couple hundred years of experience killing who loved to prolong things and viewed it as an "art." That carried over even into his dark times with a soul.

In any case, Vegeta and Spike definitely share some interesting common traits. Both play the inferior who seeks to overcome the one who came before them (in Vegeta's case, it'd be the one who became SSJ first), both eventually become good and have their momentary victories, and both eventually reconcile (to some degree) their differences with their foes.

Not to mention, I think James Marsters could do a badass Vegeta voice. And Simon Templeman could do Cell, while we're at it (points to the person who knows why he is relevant to this conversion) ;p
