What softwares do you guys use when ripping your DVD's to the computer and making screenshots? I'd like to start making wallpapers using high quality shots from DBZ, but don't know what software to look for. Thanks a bunch!

The best free software for ripping DVDs, for personal use, is a combination of two efficient but bare-bones programs. DVD Decrypter and AutoGK. Check out this tutorial to learn everything you need to know about ripping DVDs.

I was thinking about writing a guide specifically for ripping the Season Sets and Double Features. It's pretty easy but it's tedious. If anybody's interested, let me know. I'll whip one up for the North American Dragon Boxes as well if I ever get around to it.

Woah, VLC isn't very good? What do you use? I know VLC is a bitch to work with but it produces good screencaps (I think).

VLC seems to crash every time I take a screenshot now, is anyone else having that issue?

I'm with Corey. In order to get frame-accurate shots and not worry about things being shifted around in color spaces and such, I rip my DVDs and then load them up into VirtualDub via AVIsynth.

What program do you rip your DVD's with?

Chances are, like most rippers, he uses ol' reliable.

I thought we all do...

DVD Dycrypter
AVISynth
VirtualDubMod
megui
DVDShrink

Those alone get me pretty doggone far on about anything (although I use other stuff as well).

For playback I prefer Media Player Classic... and install the latest ffdshow-tryouts (with DirectVobSub for subtitles) and I'm good to go (using the Windows 7 Release Candidate as well... which is shaping up nicely by the way).

Same here. I also apply a Lanczos resize to emulate the anamorphic nature of the discs (applies to all SD content due to non-square pixels) and preserve the proper aspect ratio.

Too much work for too little results. While the more complex method may technically produce greater results, it doesn't necessarily translate to obvious differences that really affect the overall image to the point of being able to instantly spot the differences at a first glance.

For a quick shot to get a good idea of the quality, VLC does the job...

...For me at least...>.>

And how is apply filters up the wazoo going to give you a pure, full quality screenshot? :?

Hmmm, would anyone with the whole series ripped onto their harddrive/external be able to tell me how many gigs of space it's likely to take up?

I use DVD Decrypter an- Oh, someone already said it...

That's how I ripped my One Piece DVDs into Dual Audio with Subtitle tracks (the subs are a separate File, but I'll get what I can)

That way I have Dual-Audio rips on my computer just in case something happens to my actual discs (god Forbid) Because... God damnit, FUNi actually did an amazing job with One Piece...

As for Dragon Ball... I never ripped anything because I never had anything to Rip... I have the season sets, so I never really... cared...
All I have are the Babidi arc... which I wont be getting rid of because the "Rivals" DVD is actually signed by Ryo Horikawa (Vegeta's voice actor)

and I have the Pre-release DVD Screener of the Very first Volume of the Ultimate Uncuts, but I don't think there's anything worth ripping...

Obviously I'm too lazy and incapable of math or I wouldn't have asked. What about compressed into .mkvs?
