Changed lines/censorship you didn't mind

Post by Super Sonic » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:16 pm

Would any of you guys say there was anything changed in the dub, or the English manga that you'd say you didn't mind, or made things better in your view? For myself, with the dub, I preferred that they mentioned Nappa and Vegeta's superior strength in Raditz's last breath than earlier. Gave more of an "Oh Crap!" feeling. As for the manga, the coloring of Popo's lips. Kinda obvious why I prefer that.

"We've lost our old race Vegeta! Let's not lose this one too!"
Felt a lot less Cliché than "We need to get stronger!"
One of the only dub Goku moments I actually like.

In all serious-ness, It's gotta be these two Freeza lines.

"Ride em' Cowboy" while he's impaling Kuririn with his horns, and "Pop goes the weasel" when he blows Kuririn up.

As cheesy as they may be, I love them. I do agree that Season 3 was a horrible job, but these two lines made Freeza seem so much more evil too me. It made him seem like "Yeah, I'm freakin' evil, AND I'm havin' fun doing it!"

The whole General Blue pedo lines in Dragonball's filler.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I can get behind this too. I really like most changes in the English Dragonball manga. Those jokes are legitimately funny and are totally in a Toriyamaesque fashion. It just goes to show I don't hate ALL added jokes so long as they are actually humorous and in charachter.

To close on a shocker I like a few witty banter moments in the season 3 dub.

Goku:"What are you doing!?"
Freeza:"Basically, I'm trying to kill you."

I could totally see the original Freeza saying something to this extent.

Freeza: "Aren't you just like me?"
Goku: ....*smirks*
Freeza: So the jury's still out on that one, let's just wait a little while and see.

I like this exchange because in the end we see Son doesn't give into Super Saiyajin ruthlessness and spares Freeza. I do love my ironic foreshadowing.
Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight

During the first meeting with Vegeta and Nappa...

Piccolo's "We're not here to bow down to your demands, we're here to fight!" dub line is much better than the original japanese's "Come see if I'm a mere fly!".

Oh man, where do I start...

-Goku's speech to Vegeta, of course.

-Piccolo's, "We came here...TO FIGHT!" as Castor Troy mentioned

-The scene where Frieza is attacking the village. He offers Moori one last chance to talk to save his life, and then Moori asks, "Why should I believe the words of a murderer?" and then Frieza says, "You caught me - I was going to kill you even if you talked." that sounds just like something he'd say.

-Vegeta - "I can now feel one's energy as clear as the air in front of my face." It was the delivery that really made this line for me.

-Vegeta: "See you in hell, Cui."

-All of Android 13's lines in Movie 7

-Piccolo to Vegeta when he was having a nervous breakdown in Movie 8: "Just stand clear of the true warriors..."

-Goku: You fiend!
Frieza: Don't try to flatter me.

Damn, my brain's fried. That's all I can think of right now :(
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I liked that line when Scott McNeil did it.

I don't even know WHY I liked this, but I always liked Ocean Dub Raditz saying "You managed to singe some of my leghairs."

I don't know what the original line was for that exact spot, but I felt it was a good nasty line for a superior villain to say - it both showed he's a cocky bastard, as well as a powerful one.

I never did see it, but people always mention the "its not over until the fish jumps" *splash* "It's over"

I always laugh when I read the line even though I never watched the dub of any of the movies except for the ocean dub of movies 1-3.

Half of these lines don't make any dub>sub emphasis unless they have the Japanese counterpart as well. Like jjgp's examples. I remember most of the lines, but it's not fun without the original's.

This is why I'm not adding any, because I can't remember any off the top of my head, and any DVD of the series I own I haven't watched enough I guess.

Purdy much.

Also, I liked Brian Drummon's "You won't escape my wrath!!!" bit.

I love when Vegeta meets Goku for the first time in the Ocean dub, it feels much more like an epic moment (which it is obviouisly):

"So we meet at last. We've been expecting you...Kakarrot."

I think it was just something like "Finally" in the original.

Some more:

Goku: Hey look, People popcorn!
Vegeta: What is he on?

Ginyu: So treat these guys with "tender loving care" while I'm gone
Jeice: Yeah, and when he says, "Tender loving care," he doesn't mean give you flowers or all that, he means we're gonna kill you!
Ginyu: Can you please SHUT UP?!
Jeice: Oh, right, sorry about that...

Vegeta (to Krillin and Gohan): No, I don't think everything's "fine!" And I will tell you why everything is NOT fine - you summoned the Dragon, didn't you?! SHAME ON YOU! I spoiled you with new suits, saved your lives, took you in - all of that, and THIS is how you repay me?! Well you can kiss each other goodbye!

Mystic Gohan: Hey, what's wrong?! I thought you said something about, "Making me dead."
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I liked most of the jokes Viz added. My favourite being when Bulma says their boat has run out of gas, JPN Goku says "What's gas?" but Viz Goku says "My food turns into gas."

Plus there's a few times where Viz just adds a little flair to the dialogue than enhances it a lot. Like my favourite piece of Freeza dialogue ever:

"The humiliation! Me, Freeza! Beaten by a lowly... half-evolved... Saiyan...!! This is a nightmare... That's what it is! I'm going to wake up... And I'll be victorious! I'll be Freeza!!"

As opposed to the original:

"What an incredible disgrace to me...! Me, Freeza-sama, being...!! B... B... By that guy... By that Saiya-jin...! Unbelievable... This...! C... Can't be, it's a nightmare...! I... I'm... I'm Freeza...!!"
