Who Should Sing An English Chala Head Chala?

Post by DOOODGE » Sat Aug 01, 2009 11:31 am

Okay, so, here's the deal. I'm a rarity among Dragonball fandom in that I love both versions, the English and the Japanese. For different reasons, mind you, but I do. As such, I was excited as hell when FUNimation began offering the "English Voices with Japanese Music" option. I went even crazier when I saw that, for their Dragon Ball GT box sets, they dubbed the songs. I know I'm a rarity, but I LOVE English remakes of Japanese songs. I could go on for hours as to why, but for now, I have a question.

One of my dreams has been to hear an English version of Chala Head Chala (a good one--I know Gino Padilla of the Phillipines and Hironobu Kageyama himself sang one, but...let's be honest, both aren't very good for different reasons). So, question: if one of FUNimation's voice actors could sing Chala Head Chala, who would you pick?

My personal pick: Vic Mignogna.
"Gohan, l...listen..."
"What is it, Mr. Piccolo?"
"Why...didn't...you...DOOOOOODGE!!!???"

Hopefully they're doing one for the Dragon Box release, and I hope it's someone other than Vic Mignogna, they need to have a deeper voice... can Sabat sing?

Vic Mignogna sings every goddamn male-voiced song for their titles. Anyone but him, just for some variety.

My pic for a deep, but smooth voice would be Markus Lloyd, a FUNi vet with no Dragon Ball tenure as-of-yet. Look him up at ANN or something.

Ha, yes, Sabat can definitley sing...being an opera major and all.

There's no doubt in my mind he could sing a decent version, but I'm not sure someone with that deep a voice could match Kageyama.

Hironobu Kageyama's English would work if the opening and ending had its own subtitle track. It would be automatically selected when watching the English dub. Then, no one would be confused as to what he's singing.

I really just think they should use Kageyama's. Seriously.

I hope they just take the Gino Padilla version and make their own instrumental, however unlikely.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
No it wasn't Mignonga again, it was someone else.

-Edit-

it was Justin Houston who sang the ending, I think he should sing it.

Vic, why not. It'd be a nice bit of continuity, he could be the "Mr.DBZ" of America.

Please god no. His character already is, and that makes me rage even more than it should.

Ummmm, I dislike Broli as much as the next guy, but the VA is not the character.

Personally though, I really don't think there should be an official English version of the song at all. I'm perfectly fine with the Japanese one, and if FUNi were actually going to use it as the opening for the dub, I think they should just stick with the original.

I want to see Sean Schemmel do it, I don't know why I just do. It'd be interesting to see Sean try a song, yet alone a wacky, awesome, epic, song like CHA-LA-HEAD-CHA-LA.

There's nothing wrong with Vic Mignogna, but as B said, it would kinda be nice to hear someone other than Vic do a song dub.

You lie! I looked him up on ANN and he was "Robber B" in movie 13! :P

The only other thing listed there that I've seen is FMA, and it doesn't exactly list any roles for that series, so I can't really say anything about him...

But yeah. I'm cool with Vic Mignogna, I like his songs for GT and One Piece.
