Question for VegettoEX: DBZ Movie 1 Collection
Question for VegettoEX: DBZ Movie 1 Collection
Hello mate, I'm just wondering how many versions and which ones you have of DBZ Movie 1 at the moment. I could just PM you, but this way everyone can see and discuss and maybe send you some more versions!
You should do a Tidbit or Feature for it on the main site, Mike.

OK...! I can't find a couple items, so you'll have to do without pictures of them. Also, this list isn't quite as impressive the joke makes it out to be. There are plenty of readily-accessible items I'm missing (for example, the DVD/Blu-ray "Double Feature" from FUNimation).
Honestly, I'll take anything anyone wants to send me ^_~. I'd love more...!
(01) Fansub VHS

Obvious one, but felt I should include it. I found Meri's copy in the basement, so this is what I took a picture of. You've heard us mention time and time again how old bootleggers would just take random print-outs to make "covers" for them, and this is a great example. Sure, it's not the movie 12 cover with "DEATH OF CHIBI BUU" written on it, but it's just as strange! This particular fansub was the first two DBZ movies, as seen written on the spine.
(02) FUNimation/Pioneer Dubbed VHS (1997)
Unfortunately, I can't find some of my VHSes right now, so I couldn't take a picture of this. I actually purchased this before the subbed copy 'cuz it was all my local store had in stock.
(03) FUNimation/Pioneer Subtitled VHS (1997)
Again, can't find it, so no picture right now. I got this soon after the dubbed version. My copy came in a clamshell case; I'm not sure if ONLY the first movie had this upon its original release, 'cuz my subbed copies of movies 2 & 3 came in the regular cardboard slip-cover that every other VHS on the planet came in back then.
(04) FUNimation/Pioneer DVD (1997)

I picked this up soon after getting my first DVD player. My copy comes in the original packaging that early DVDs came in... it's a cardboard slip-cover, and inside is a standard, CD-sized jewel case with the DVD inside that (with its own little insert cover inside the jewel case, too). I got my copies of movies 2 & 3 later on, both of which came in the standard amery case.
(04) FUNimation/Pioneer Laserdisc (1997)

I got this as a gift from Tanooki relatively recently :P. It hangs up on my wall, which is otherwise filled with framed LPs & CDs (so it fits in nicely in terms of style). Don't have an LD player of my own, though I know someone who does.
(05) FUNimation "Ultimate Uncut Edition" (2005)

I got this along with the first TV episode volume of the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" series. This was actually during a short period of time when FUNimation was just sending me stuff for no real reason. I later (in 2006) picked up the "First Strike" boxset on my own, which gave me a duplicate copy of the movie. I passed one out as a prize during a convention the next year, I think, so I've only got the one copy of it, now.
(06) Toei / Pony Canyon Dragon Box (2006)

Obviously, I have the copy that came with "Dragon Box: The Movies". I don't have the individual-disc release that came out in 2008, though, since it's exactly the same thing.
(07) Polyband/AB Groupe (German, 2004)

A gift from our buddy Timo! Contains the German dub in a 5.1 track and the Japanese version in a 2.0 track. Video is 4:3. I can't remember if this is edited or not...? Been a long while since I got it, and though I watched it, I can't remember much :P.
(08) SF Norge/AB Groupe (Sweedish, 2004)

A gift from our buddy sangofe! Four audio tracks (as listed, "Svenskt, danskt, norskt och japanskt tal"). Video is 4:3. I've spot-checked it, but again, don't remember much since it's been a while.
(09) Manga Entertainment (Portuguese, dunno the year)

My most recent acquisition comes from our buddy DNA! This is apparently a re-release of the movie. This particular one comes in a nice steelcase and has three postcards inside, each with a different bit of art from the packaging (Goku on the cover, Goku/Arale on the back, and a shot of Garlic's angry face). 4:3 video, and only has the the Portuguese dub, I believe.
I... think that's it...? I've got a copy I taped offa Cartoon Network when they first aired it, but that was just mostly to see what kind of censoring it'd get; really just a variation on other releases. Gimme more! :P I'll make a huge comparison video one day, I promise!

The artwork on the fansub VHS tape is something I've never seen before. I didn't think there was still DBZ artwork I haven't seen.
I only have one copy of movie 1, the Funimation/Pioneer one in the standard DVD case that came in the boxset that had the second and third movies. Just bought it recently while I was riding on a wave of nostalgia, for DBZ, and for the Ocean cast dub of the movies.

The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Can I get a Schemen?
The funny thing is that the Swedish one's title isn't "The World's Strongest", but "The hunt for Garlic". It's like they know who they are looking for and hunt for him around the globe or something.
The fansub VHS looks so sweetly retro in a kind of way.
And, no matter how many times you say it, that collection is kinda impressive considering that it's only one Dragonball Z movie out of 13 we are talking about here.

It was called "Dead Zone" in America, Movie 2 was "World's Strongest"

I made a little research and from what I gather, the edition I sent you is from this year, 2009.
There's been a VHS edition and I think there was a DVD edition as well. It's dubbed in Portuguese only as far as I now and again, as far as I know, there's only been one dub, so I'll assume that's the one used.
All the editions are the same, there's no difference between them.

According to the blurb on the Swedish DVD case, apparantly a Namekian named "Kami" landed on Earth, created the dragonballs, then split into two creatures. One of these, the evil one, then had a son named Piccolo, whose life was connected to God's.
...so what about this "Kami" person, again?

I'm also shocked that I have never seen that image before.
I wonder if there are more lost images somewhere.
On hiatus.

INTERESTING: Two of the screenshots aren't in the movie!
Quick question: have you ever tried ripping the 5.1 audio, and taking apart the channels like people do with the season sets to get just the BGM? And what all was released in Germany with 5.1 audio tracks? Thanks!!Timo wrote:Unedited and uncut.VegettoEX wrote: (07) Polyband/AB Groupe (German, 2004)
