Ideas for a new Dragonball game
Ideas for a new Dragonball game
Yeah these threads come up every few months, but what the hell, it's always fun to listen to what you guys want!
Self explanatory thread, I'll start!
I'd like a fighting game (not enough of those, right?), which is completely sprite based. Something like BlazBlue (but a lot more fast paced).
Crazy animations, combined with a control system like Street Fighter , except incredibley more indepth, long chaining combos which are very hard to pull off, but being rewarded greatly for doing so (aka, elements of Tekken). No need for more than 20 characters really, heck, I wouldn't mind 10 (Again, ala BlazBlue), just the mains. Being animated by Toei would be a plus (like Ultimate battle 22, except brilliant animation.. again, BlazBlue.. I love that game.)
I'm a sucker for old-school gaming, what can I say?
What about you guys? (Try to be a bit more creative than "Super DBZ 2!" please)

The next game would have to find a way to balance out the elements of a 2D fighting game but keep the massive stage feel from the Sparking series(confused?).
Nothing is more satisfying then pulling off a massive combo like in Tekken or Street Fighter, but a 2D fighting game is not DBZ. There is not one fight in Dragonball that isn't over the top in either comedy or action so just having a 2D fighter would limit the DB feel.
So the next game would need to find a way to capture the feeling of flying around blowing shit up but at the same time make it so that blowing shit up is satisfying as hell. I am so sick of this 1 or 2 button special shit. Everything is over simplified and it leads to nothing but spam attacks in online battles(Burst Limit).
The only problem I'm having with my own idea is that I can't figure out how they would pull off a massive arena without the use of Split screen multi-player (that drives me mad...fighters shouldn't be split screen).
As for character count, I think the character count in the sparking series was WAY too obnoxious. I'm fine with what Raging Blast is offering in terms of head count. As long as they cover the key players in each arc I wouldn't complain. Everyone complains about how there should be a Goku from each arc executing only moves from said arc. I think it would be more fun(and strategic) to have a massive move list and the ability to customize each character to your liking(something to the effect of Godhand).
Oh, I forgot the story mode should mix both fighting and adventure because the series consisted of more than just fighting. Capturing both elements would make it a true Dragonball game.

I'm gonna stream-of-consciousness for a bit.
I think I'm going to ramble through ... various parts of the series, and try to pull out what happens and see what I can come up with for a video game adaptation. And... Ur... I guess see how compatible the ideas for different portions are when it's all done.
So, the Pilaf stuff is almost entirely adventure and strategy-based. There are practically no true fights; even the fighting we get is ended by circumstances other than fighting ability: Yamcha sees Bulma, Goku gets hungry, Oolong can't sustain a transformation, Oozaru Goku got his tail cut off...
So this kinda strikes me as something of a strategy-based action/adventure not-quite-(but-maybe)-RPG type thing.
Which is kind of odd, since the "realtime strategy" thing I was thinking of makes me think of things way darker than the first two volumes of DB.
Since... ur... I want to cover more of the series in this post without making computers explode, I'll go shallow on the details for now...
The tournaments are certainly fights, and could even play like traditional fighters, even with the Cell Games and the 25th World Tournament.
But they all have a context; particularly the 21st, since Goku and Krillin's training gets some attention. There is pretty much no fighting in their training, but if games were made for each specific task they undergo... well... Mario Party + DB?
Could be a primarily fighting-oriented game, with loads of minigames in a certain mode (but since the tournament is mostly mini-game-free, and the training is mostly sparring-free, the balance would be tough).
Let's look at how the fights go in the tournament...
With all of Jackie Chun's fights, they play out without being too big on strategics (other than blowing up the moon), so far as unique gameplay goes (obviously, strategy is involved, but similar to Streetfighter).
The environment comes ito play, but it does in Mortal Kombat: Deceptions as well. XD.
Nam... Ranfan... Giran... Bacterian? Even with the gimmicks, works fine in traditional fighter form. I could see these being not too difficult to adapt to whatever we had previously, but that's probably because I haven't gotten too deep into it. ^^
Moving on to the RRA...
I like the filler leading into the Red Ribbon arc, and it has loads of potential in various types of games:
- Goku and Namu breaking Giran's dam after a desert adventure...
- Goku chasing down the kid that stole his stuff (after Nyoui-bo can apparently hear him from a distance so as to make it not a nude chase), while Silver and Pilaf maneuver for the DBs in the same general area...
- Silver's seige on Mt. Frypan, with use of strategy over force to subdue Gyu-mao. And hey, ChiChi does stuff.
- And there's that aerial battle / chase.
- And Silver blowing up Kento'un.
- And Jingle Village features crappy stealth.
.
- And there's that maze in Muscle Tower, and Buyon, and that they had to let the cold in to beat him, and Murasaki's antics, and.......
*ahem*.
So long as there's enough of a balance between the various elements of the action (The Murasaki fight seems a good example), I could see this being just a slightly more beatup-filled version of what we had for Pilaf.
It's similar with Blue and his whole arc.
TaoPaipai is a bit different, but at this point I'm not sure it hurts.
(By the way, was there a Karin's Tower minigame in Infinite World? How did that play?)
I'm beginning to think that the fighting aspect doesn't have to be the major aspect (not ignored, mind; it's still very important) for a decent DB game to happen.
The Tournaments are a bit difficult on that... but yeah.
Krillin confused Chaozu with numbers (and... ur... made him use his hands?).
Chaozu interfered with the battle between Goku and T'en...
Tamberine took down hungry Goku.
Goku survived his fight with Piccolo mainly because Yajirobe was hiding nearby.
And again... Filler. Icemaze is fun.
While the fight with Piccolo could easily be a traditional battle, the way it ends seems like it'd be interesting to try and adapt into something a bit different.
Let's... skip the tournament that follows, since there's not much new there that I haven't already said.
.
Raditz... Tail-grabbing, angry Gohan, chasing with the Dragon Radar... Hmm.
I mean, like Abridged Raditz said... "Attacking an opponent roughly four times your strength in a one-on-one fight. A cunning strategy! Wait, no, not cunning. What's the opposite of that?"
Yay, Budokai minigames. XD.
Dragonball needs some multiplayer Cooperative games that aren't sagas.
Gohan cuts off a dinosaur's tail and uses it for food.
Catch the monkey!
// And like... get out of Hell, or ... something.
When the fighting actually starts, though...
The Saibaman Self-destruct thing? That's not a rush attack in BT. That's Yamcha turning his back on his fallen opponent and getting killed for it. (Yay, Sagas got that part. Using saibamen in a way I don't like, but eh.).
Krillin destroyed three in a single attack. Any games where you can do that?
Yamcha won his fight mostly unscathed, then got blown up.
Oh, and dismemberment.
And the Gohan/Krillin/Piccolo combo on Nappa. I mean, it failed, but still! Legends and Sagas try to make that doable, I guess.
Meanwhile, Goku's in a hurry.
And then there's the fight with Vegeta, which is an awesome display of strategy and stuff that... really doesn't happen again, even though it kinda tries to.
There are four people in play against Vegeta. That's not easy to pull off in anything other than Legends with what we currently have, and that still misses a lot (The three-person Spirit-bomb combo... Seriously! Why hasn't this been done yet? That was how I thought of the Spirit Bomb until I saw it used on Freeza... so much more interesting than in the movies...).
And again with the tail-severing. Artificial moons. Krillin about to finish Vegeta with a sword.
Namek?
Stealth.
Power-surpression.
Destroying villages, hiding in caves and water, using large blasts to trick ki-blind enemies...
Namek is decidedly Metal Gear Solid (state scouter).
This persists into the Freeza fight, really, with everyone swapping out, hiding, buying time and abusing "zenkai"s...
Once SSJ Goku comes into play, that kinda falls to the wayside, but there's a timelimit and the interplanetary DB-strategy that comes in... (though admitedly, unless you're dealing with Gohan and Dende there, I don't see how that'd be easy to involve).
And... well... for a series based around gathering dragonballs, there don't seem to be many games where you ... gather the dragonballs.
And... I'm out of time. But I'll be back! You haven't heard the last of the Green Ranger!

A Dragon Ball (pre Z) game using the "Tales of"" engine. A One Piece game would also work with the "Tales of" engine.
Otherwise, I've thought a lot about my perfect Dragon Ball game. I've gone into extreme detail on YouTube. It's basically an open world Sparking game.
It would have modes like a character creator, a move creator, and a manga creation mode. The story would cover all of the show, from Pilaf to Buu. And there would be a lot of emphasis on multiplayer. Both online and split-screen.
I'd give a lot of love to Dragon Ball characters. Almost everybody from the original show would have a form representing their persona in the earlier episodes. With that in mind, I would also have a split between air combat and ground combat.
Also I would have a lot of what-ifs. Not what-if stories, those can go to jail. What-if characters. With a fan submission and fan poll.

I want a three-dimensional Dragon Ball (pre-Z) game, but the story mode should be much more vast than any of the other Dragon Ball games. Like, a combined B3 and BT3 story mode, but more. Remember, still sticking in Dragon Ball.
The story mode could begin with Son Goku in the mountains. It wouldn't cut straight to the fighting, but Goku travelling around the mountains (maybe, like, a little compass or whatever to lead him to his destination) until he meets the fish--and that will be the first battle. It would sort of be like a BT3 fighting engine, but the landscape would be much bigger and you couldn't spam moves repeatedly. A concept similar to what I heard in another thread where your ki was similar to your health. As in, if you were low on health, you couldn't perform a Kamehameha because you didn't have enough energy. I think that would make the game more realistic and similar to what happens in the DB story.
In the story mode, you would still be able to fly around, like in B3, as well. But also, when Bulma comes around, I want her to be playable. You could switch between Goku and Bulma (and other characters like Yamcha when they became involved in the quest). Bulma would officially become a playable character.
So, basically, the story mode would be exactly like the actual story, so everything Goku does, you do, and that includes flying around on Kinto'un, battling Buyon, everything. And you wouldn't be playing as just one character. The part where Roshi and Lunch are being attacked by the Red Ribbon Army--you would be able to switch between both Roshi and Lunch if you wanted to. For example, you would start as Roshi, but you could switch to Lunch, while Roshi would be controlled by a computer.
There may be what-if storylines, but that would depend on the character's actions. No what-if characters, though.
And for the characters and alternate costumes, I want to go all-out with this one. Characters should have up to five costumes.
There's probably a lot more I need to include, since I've mainly described the story mode. But that's all for now.

Dragonball : Heroes!
(name sucks but this is idea
Basic Idea
An action RPG. I'd say End of Dragonball - Frieza saga. It should have more original stuff though mixed with the already established stuff. Like Legacy of Goku did in that action rpg. Maybe mix in movies 1 to Lord Slug. The graphics need to be like blue dragon. See these images :

The reason to End at Frieza saga is story wise it all comes down to a great end. A legend fulfilled (SSJ) , Saiyan to Frieza saga are so tightly connected (added end of dragon ball so when Piccolo joins Goku it's means more)
The game should also be 2 player on the same console or online with different parts of the game having different characters to pick. So say at start vs Raditz player 1 = Goku player 2 Piccolo. Yet when they first fight Frieza Vegeta , Gohan ect.. would be used.
The idea is a two-man Action RPG. Think Marvel: Ultimate Alliance but instead of 4 it's 2. 2 Alows for better camera plus 2 allows for fights such as Raditz. Mixed with Legacy of goku.
Yes this means having to work around SSJ Goku VS Frieza. Best way around it IMO is have players fight up till the final showdown and have Frieza vs goku completely animated as a final cutscene/ending video.
Then when sequel comes around you do Garlic Jr Saga and Cell Plus movies Cooler's Revenge to Broly. (I'd leave Bojack as Celll is such a good ending.)
Third game = Great Saiyaman to Buu and Movies Bojack to Wrath of the Dragon (but rework Wrath of the Dragon to come before Buu as Buu ending = best)
In third game the fusions = cut-scenes with players 1 and 2 working together as the two separate people. E.g Gotenks - player 1 goten player 2 Trunks and fight to get to the fusions.
Or make fusions mini-games e.g when Gotenks goes to use his ghost attack player one has to press the buttons as they appear on the screen. Then when ghosts fly at him player 2 has to wiggle the sticks to fill meter for damage.
Consoles = Ps3 and 360.

I'd love to see a pair of 3D adventure games for the 360 and PS3, with one game covering Dragon Ball and the other covering Z, but only if the two got all of the development time it needs to be great games, instead of having to be completed within one year.

I repost this every time the topic comes up, but it's still the best idea evers.
Rocketman wrote:Vegeta: Saiyan Pride
The main character is Vegeta, and the game is set during his years of service under Freeza. As Vegeta scours planets of life, he also searches them for anything that can give him an advantage over Freeza.
Featuring hideous brutality (ripping civilians in half, tearing out giants' eyes, snapping necks with Vegeta's tail, blood splatters everywhere, breaking off some poor bastard's arm and eating it to restore health), no wangst whatsoever as Vegeta laughs his way through the genocide of several planets, and beautifully rendered roomy settings to explore and lay waste to as you revel in carnage and bloodlust.
Unlockable Characters/Costumes:
-Miscolored Vegeta
-Badman Vegeta (w/ tail so those combos can still be done)
Collect half the MacGuffins and Arlia is unlocked as a bonus area after completing the story mode. Collect all and beat Arlia to unlock the Earth.
