Dragonball Parodies and Homages

Post by Suupaa Gohan 2 » Thu Dec 03, 2009 12:13 pm

Not sure if this is the right place for this kind of thread, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Well, Dragonball is a series that has weasled its way into popular culture pretty heavily, considering its long run and enormous popularity. Naturally, there have been numerous parodies and homages of it in various series' since it began. I thought it'd be kinda fun to have a thread to share some of those tributes from other series' with our fellow fans.

I'm thinking mostly parodies/homages from other Anime and Manga series', but western media is okay too as long as the mods don't mind. I know I've seen my fair share of DBZ parodies in western cartoons as well.

So here's what inspired me to make this. In the next time preview for episode 23 of Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, my current obsession, there was a pretty obvious - albeit unusual (as in, I have no idea why it came up in the first place; I know he's talking about Shunkan Idou which must be a reference to Gaap's ability to make warp portals I guess) - Dragonball parody. I happened to be eating when I saw it and I almost did a spit-take. You can see it here. Basically this entire portion of the visual novel this Anime is based on is an affectionate parody of Shounen series' (which this series is most certainly not), and there's even a more direct DB reference in the VN itself:

"Virgilia!! What does the scouter say about his power level?!"

Incidentally these scenes should be in next week's episode, and I'm curious if they'll keep the references in, or if perhaps the episode 23 preview was meant to 'replace' them.

So yeah, that's my contribution of the day. What are some of yours?

Check out who came to the party! 'Sup, girl?

The mods don't care about East vs. West so long as it:

A) Is DragonBall-related
B) Doesn't go out of its way to alienate or insult a particular group or
C) Doesn't degenerate into an endless argument (a la Dub vs. Sub)

So I'm pretty sure that any parody will do just fine. ^_^

Very rare find. Naruto Uzumaki's clothes and hair were modeled after Goku in his Super Saiyan state:

Ah, I see. Well, in that case, though I'm sure a lot of people have seen this one before, Robot Chicken: DBZ Christmas

'Tis the season, and all.

I can't find a decent video but on Fairly OddParents there was an episode called Channel Chasers. In the episode the last show they go to is called Maho Mushi which parodied Dragon Ball(and anime in general I guess since there are giant robots in it).
Here is the best I could find:

Vicky is obviously Piccolo and Timmy is Goku.

Aaalright, I went and dug out something I wrote a while ago, here ya go.

If you guys haven't seen Hare and Guu (Jungle wa Itsumo), my god you should. Its a fantastic, wonderfully drawn, utterly bizarre, and strangely touching at times between fits of batshit series and I love it dearly. Frequently throughout its run there's scattered parodies and homage, but this one was possibly the funniest because most of the cast plays it so damn straight.

If you haven't seen the show, you'll need just a little background. The blue-haired boy (Hare) is possibly the only logical/sane person in the village. Understanding that things are wrong when noone else does makes him shout at the camera a lot. The little pink-haired girl (Guu) is basically the vortex of all of the weird that has come into the world. These other characters are all reoccurring people, though you don't need to know them to get the jokes. It just makes it funnier if you do.

Here's a link for the first ones. 00:25 to 4:20 has multiple little one scattered through it.
Bit one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV3VtCso ... C&index=20

Bit two- The video's off since almost 15 seconds from the sound in this one but the gag still comes though clearly enough. 1:07 to 1:20.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWXwWUjq ... C&index=21

Combined with the general insanity and hilarity of the show, this makes it my favorite parody.

The scene in the recent Astroboy movie where the Peacmaker tries to crush Astro in his hand and he shoots the Peacmaker in the eye, kind of reminded me of Goku blasting Vegeta.

Don't think it was a homage so much as a coincidence.

Umm... I recall a Super Milk-Chan outtake where she answered the phone with "Osu! Ora Goku!"?

The Chaos Emeralds from the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games are based on the Dragon Balls.
Angel Island, where Knuckles the Echidna lives, is based on Kaiou's planet.

(I'd mention the character similiarities, but those archtypes are so cliche, it seems a bit unfair to the Sonic guys to say they're "DBZ ripoffs.")
