How did Cell manage to change the past/present?

Trunks stated when he went to the past/present, that the androids were much stronger than in his time. This is probably due to cell, who arrived a year before the first time Trunks appeared. So, how did Cell have that effect?

I don't think the Androids actually were stronger or weaker between timelines. I think that was just a misconception on Trunks' part.

We know that the future-Androids liked to toy around with their opponents. Right before they finally killed him, Gohan confidently claimed that he'd become strong enough to beat them. He thought he fully understood and had measured their power, only to be grimly informed that he was dead wrong; 17 had barely been using half-strength last time.

Now the Androids were likely doing the same thing with Trunks. Letting him survive, flee and get a bit stronger, getting just a little closer to beating them each time, or so he thinks. It's what they do, because they have little other way to amuse themselves.

The present Androids, on the other hand, aren't nearly so bored. They have a purpose, and a programmed mission: to kill Son Goku. They don't really need to toy around with heroes to occupy themselves. At least, not yet. So when Vegeta and company got in their way, they didn't hold back. They just KO'd everyone and moved on.

The future Androids would have scarcely or never done this to Trunks, giving him the impression that they were somehow stronger. When in reality, he's just never seen what his Androids can really do.

Cell had nothing to do with that. Androids #17 and #18's activation was most likely delayed, giving Gero time to make them stronger. Maybe trunks had something to do with it when he killed Mecha Freeza and King Cold, so Gero saw stronger people, and made Cell and his androids stronger. These, or they could just be stronger with no actions of Cell or Trunks impacting. Either way though, Cell had nothing to do with the strengths of androids because nobody even noticed he was there until a certain time after he arrived.

As a matter of fact, there were 3 timelines. One was the present one, the one that the series takes place in. Another was the one that trunks came from. And another one that Cell came from, as he stated the androids were dead already and he killed trunks, meaning there were 3. But if he killed the androids, than that would be from the timeline he returned to after defeated Cell in the present timeline. But then that would make another alternate timeline if he returned to future, making 4 timelines. Okay, I'm very confused, can someone help me out with this timeline and time travel suff?

The DB wiki is normally very poorly written, but for this one topic they actually did quite well:
