Calling all brawlers

Post by verto » Sat Jan 09, 2010 2:35 pm

I'm not sure if this should be in fan created works, but its a video game thing so here it is....

I'm looking to create some new characters for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wondering if any of you are brawlers and if you have any experience with animation hacking/texturing and would be interested in helping (I'm assuming none, but I thought I should ask anyway).
Or, if anyone just has some ideas for moves, feel free to post them here if you wouldn't mind and I'll be giving you credit should this hack ever see the light of day. For the move list part, no technical skill is required, just a basic understanding of how smash works.

I will also be looking for people to make some gifs for me later on, to show some of the animations once they are completed.

I currently have 0 progress done besides a small amount of planning and some (very) basic move sets in mind.

EDIT: Somehow I forgot to mention that this is a dragonball mod... anyway, ya, dragonball characters.

I'm looking to create characters from each part of the series, so there may be DB Goku, Goku from the Namek time-period and Buu era Goku all at once.

Well, game-modding falls best under FanWorks, I think. Moved.

So... does this have anything to do with DragonBall...? I mean, were you planning on creating some DB characters? If not, this really isn't the board for this type of discussion.

Ya, wow, I can't believe I forgot to say that... what is wrong with me? I plan on making it only Dragonball characters.

I'm not sure what you're planning is possible with already existing hacking methods. I tried to get hardcore into Brawl around it's release, but eventually lost interest. Around when I stopped caring, the first version of Brawl+ was released. Brawl+ modifies the games in several ways, such as changing hit-boxes of and number of frames in attacks, changing air-dodging back to the way Melee worked, and, of course, removing tripping. The mod doesn't do anything as significant as changing a characters attack though, let alone an entire moveset.

As far as changing models and textures, Syntax Error were the most popular texture hackers at the time. They were going to release their texture pack on a day I've since forgotten, but got a cease and desist from Nintendo shortly before said day. From what I know it's pretty easy to hack textures in Brawl nowadays. You could probably find a good tutorial with Google. Model hacking, on the other hand, was never achieved while I was into Brawl, and from the looks of it still pretty much hasn't been. While people can remove parts of the model and alter the sizes of the parts, (Such as in this Baby Mario hack I found) it's currently impossible to completely replace character models.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can do what you want to do with Brawl. There's currently no way to mod completely new characters into Brawl. I didn't do extensive research on the subject, but what little I did seemed to indicate that hacking Brawl hasn't even come close to that level. The closest you can do is texture hacking already existing characters to look like Dragon Ball characters.

Here's a couple of Dragon Ball texture hacks I found: (Kid Boo) (Cell)

Brawl hacking has come a LOOONG way since then. Model hacking, while not completely done, has been somewhat achieved, we can now replace alloys with assist trophies/pokemon and we can create new animations, make hitboxes, theres a lot more that can be done now campared to when you quit.

I've started on Piccolo's animations so far, and its going to be a really long process, but hopefully I can get at least one character done. If I can do that, I'll probably feel a lot more motivated to do more. I'm currently working on his up smash.

Huh. Can you link to any examples of model hacking? This sounds interesting...

So how would you insert these into a game? Is it just for use on a PC emulator? And can you use these on the actual Wii console?

You can use them on a Wii through Homebrew and then an application called Gecko OS. They're inserted by replacing files, so if I make Piccolo using Falcon's .pac file as the base, I will overwrite Captain Falcon (I could actually put the file into any other characters data file and replace them instead, but it would work the best with Falcon.)
