How do you feel about Kai's soundtrack?

Post by Vino » Wed Mar 17, 2010 1:14 pm

To me it fit pretty well with the Saiyajin saga and overall liked it. What bothered me is that they started to overuse the same tracks in Freeza's battles while they have a lot of other tracks to use. If Yamamoto composed tracks for the Freeza saga as well, it would have been a lot better.

Hopefully Cell/Androids saga has some new tracks to dish.

I like it more than the original or Funi music.

I really enjoy the soundtrack as music. I think it's well composed and there are a lot of great tracks that are sometimes utilized well in the show. However, I generally feel like the music is lazily used and way too overpowering in certain scenes. I mean, how many times are they going to use that same "emotional" track when something emotional is happening? As well, the fighting music seems to really repeat itself. With One Piece, it's sort of ok because of how the episodes are structured and the fac that it's usually a few episodes until that track shows up again, but it just feels like every episode or every other episode you hear the same damn BGM playing.

The original DBZ soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks ever. Sure, I don't like DBZ all that much because of the filler, but the soundtrack is spot-on. I think more Japanese fans and Japanese version fans would've enjoyed it if Kai had the original soundtrack and I know I would've still enjoyed Kai a lot, too.

However, I do really like the Kai soundtrack a lot! There's a lot of really cool tracks in the show that I really like and, while it's different than the original, it still feels like Dragonball to me. If the US Broadcast soundtrack still sounded like Dragonball, I probably wouldn't have had much of a problem with it.

I don't really care for it. A lot of times it's just there and I kinda tune it out but other times it's so loud that it becomes distracting. I like the opening and ending themes, but they made new animation to go along with those so it fits better to me. If they had done the same thing with the entire show then I would probably like Kai's music a little more, but for now it just ranges from tolerable, forgettable, and distracting for me.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Good tracks, subpar implementation. Mainly due to that SSJ scene.

I enjoy the soundtrack a lot. It's not as memorable as Kikuchi's soundtrack for DB/DBZ, but as a fan of orchestral music and video game music, which is Yamamoto's strength, I listen to Kai music fairly regularly. I do agree with folks in that it's used somewhat poorly in the show at times. Lots of the same 5 tracks used over and over, but there's less music for Kai right now, then there was for DB/DBZ.

I do think that once we hit the Trunks/Androids episodes, we'll probably start hearing some new music. They gots to sell more CDs, you know!
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as Kaiser. The actual tracks are really good, but they're not being used to the best of their potential. Especially with Super Saiyan Goku. I'm not saying they had to use that particular insert song, but the fact that they didn't do ANYTHING special for that crucial, epic moment, and rather chose to use some track we already hear three times per episode... leaves me scratching my head.

I love the Kai music I just wish there was more of it. They seem to be reusing tracks like crazy and it gets a little stale after awhile

Kind of like the Kikuchi score in the Saiyan saga.

The thing is, I notice the same tracks over and over again in DBZ, too, and I never judged DBZ harshly because of it. So, I treat Kai the same way.

It seemed like DBZ tended to use music from DB and newly composed music for DBZ so it was a little more varied to me just because there was such a large stock of previous tracks to pull from.

Really? The music in the Saiyan saga was the same in Dragon Ball, save for a few tracks.

That may be my opinion because all Kikuchi's tracks sound pretty much the same to me.

There was originally composed music for the Saiyajin saga. More then a few tracks for sure.

As I said, the music sounded very much like it did in Dragon Ball and also got really repetitive for me.

Personally, I find the Kai soundtrack to be much more enjoyable than Kikuchi's original score. In my opinion, I find the Kai score as enjoyable as the dub music, which is great :D ~More music to enjoy~

The Kai soundtrack is very refreshing, I pretty much enjoy hearing a completely new musical take on some of the key scenes of the series.

In saying that, I only watched up until episode 12, so I don't have TOO much of an opinion on the application of the music. I only watched each episode once after all.

The only parts I don't really care for are "Dragon Soul" or "Yeah! Break! Care! Break!", due both to "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and "WE GOTTA POWER" more or less brainhumping me for years, and the fact that I'm not into that kinda sound.

It might have something to do with the fact that actual music from Dragonball (not Z) was used as far as the Freeza arc.

My thoughts on the Kai musical score:

As far as BGM, it just isn't as intense or varied as the Kikuchi score, and it feels a little too "safe" and leashed, as if it were just kind of the same music you hear in any action/adventure anime where you barely notice the soundtrack. Kikuchi's score may not have been on the same level as, say, a Kanno or Kajiura soundtrack, but he was about on level with somebody like Miyagawa (Yamato), in my opinion, and had this great ability to make you feel captured in the magic of the show with the help of his music.

Now, would I have preferred if they kept the same Kikuchi score, or had brought him back to do similar tracks? It's hard to say.

I do find myself a little more accepting of the Yamamoto score during the Freeza/Namek arc, and Goku's fight with Freeza specifically, with a few moments of exception. I can't say that the music's over use is a problem, since I never had a problem with certain tracks of Z's music being used over and over again, I think rather the problem is how restrained and weak some of the tracks are, when compared to Kikuchi's score, and how they don't even really fit the animation the way his tracks do.

But there are some tracks I do like, like "Off To A New Adventure", "A Moment for Shuddering", and "The Braveheart's Triumphant Return".

As far as the vocal pieces, they really don't jibe well with "Dragon Ball Z", but I think that's the point. They're supposed to jibe with the modern interpretation. Still, I have yet to hear anything as passionate or exciting as "Cha-La Head Cha-La" or "Aoi Kaze no Hope".
