Favourite character

Post by Piccolo Daimao » Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:51 am

So, I thought it would be good to make a thread for people to post who their favourite character is. Many members here will have a favourite character and have reasons for that. So I'll start off.

My favourite character, as you could probably guess by my username, is Piccolo. Why? Well, because I believe he's the most badass character of the series, with a unique costume and character design. He has a serious, cool personality and has proved to be one of, if not the most, intelligent of the Z-Senshi. His backstory always intrigued me, and I like his character development as well--how he goes from being the evil Demon King, to befriending his archenemy's child, then finally sacrificing his life for that child.

Vegeta is a close second, as I always found him to be a charismatic character, and I liked how his personal motives for helping the heroes continued to change throughout the series. The fact that I found him more irritating than any of the other villains due to his egotistical behaviour made me like him even more, and, in my opinion, he had the best case of character development in the series.

So, who is your favourite character and why?

I'd say my favorite character is Vegeta, because he's one of the characters with the most character development from his appearance through the end of the series. And I ended up drawing him a lot because I used to do these dumb little comics...and...well, it's pretty easy to put Vegeta into hilarious situations...
That being said, I think he's a pretty badass guy and (though it takes him a while) by the end of the series he becomes a pretty respectable fellow. He stubbornly holds onto his personality, etc., but manages to change just enough that it's truly significant.
I actually hated Vegeta when I first started watching DBZ. But I guess he grew on me.

If I could pick a top three, I think the next two would be Goku and Piccolo. I know, all big, main characters; I'm boring.

EDIT: Sat down and thought about it for a bit because this was bugging me. (And apparently enough that I thought it'd be worth it to come back and edit my post because of it? XD) I've decided that Goku is tied up there for my favorite with Vegeta. I just like them for such different reasons that I guess it didn't occur to me at first. I probably default to Vegeta because he's been a favorite for longer. Before I read the manga/watched some subbed eps, I didn't really care that much one way or the other for Goku's character. But clearly his fun-loving and (frankly) utterly selfish personality, that doesn't exactly show in the dub, is the best part Goku. (I'm talking Z here, since I haven't seen all of DB, and what I did see was a long time ago...) So when I finally got to read/see those things, I realized that I love Goku's character. And finally, upon reflection it sunk in that I like him every bit as much as I like Vegeta.
And that is my official statement and proclamation to the world. XD

My favorite character is Gohan. I didn't watch Dragon Ball Z and just decided I liked the character moreso than the others. I ended up liking Gohan because in my childhood I used to go to a role-playing chatroom. Originally is was called pikachu-chat, then it was renamed anime-chat, and finally it was renamed gamerz-chat before it eventually shut down. The chat only allowed one person to a name, so there weren't 15 Gokus, 12 Ryus, and 9001 Vegetas running around etc. People fought over saiyan names to the point of it being ridiculous. People would grab nobody-on-screen-for-10-seconds-characters like "Zorn" and use them to role-play their way to Super Saiyan.

Some how, through my friends in there, I was christened with Gohan. Originally I claimed Future Gohan, which I felt was a separate character from Gohan, the same way that Future Trunks is to Trunks. Everyone agreed, except the original Gohan. He threw a tissy-fit over it. The guy who played Goku and his buddy Brak got fed up with him pissing and moaning about it and solved the issue by banning him for always causing a ruckus and they gave me Gohan. I eventually stopped using Future Gohan and just stuck with Gohan. In order to role-play him as accurately as possible, I researched the crap out of the character and I guess I did such a good job that people would tell me OOC that they felt like they were talking to the actual character.

So now, years and years later, I guess I just have an attachment to Gohan left over from my childhood.

Y'know, it's funny...but I don't have any particular least favorite character (not even Broli, who's fandom I pay no attention), nor do I really like to think I have a favorite character. I suppose, though, if I had to choose, I'd pick Son Gohan as played by Masako Nozawa. Those Saiyan arc episodes are just precious and as odd as the about-face is during the battle with Cell, I think the character's got a clear ascension to main character. But for similar reasons, I also love Son Gokû who isn't your average superhero-type, but rather does everything he does out of his selfishness first. Then there's Vegeta who starts out so evil and then by the end of the series has obtained such confidence and composure in himself (and the things on Earth that have come to have meaning for him) that he essentially stands as a genocidal monster who now just has other stuff to do. Piccolo too has a fun character arch, going through his time as pure evil, then meeting Gohan, and then finally sacrificing himself for something other than his own evil desires.

So...uh...yeah!!

Son Goku. He's just encompasses everything that is Dragon Ball, and the reason I still love the series. The way he can shift from being the love-able oaf to a complete badass just reflects the series itself perfectly. His will to keep training and beating bigger and bigger obstacles, so he can do what he loves best; Fight. Sure he fucks up, and makes a few dumb choices (letting Vegeta go etc), but you just forgive him, 'cause well.... he's Goku!
Sure he doesn't have character development as strong as Vegeta, or Piccolo, but you know what? Fuck that shit, he doesn't need it. I love him just the way he is.

Hopefully the picture is allowed, it's what I fucking love about Goku, rolled into one image.

Wow, I think you just summed up what I was about to say in a nutshell. Piccolo's always been my favorite character, for the reasons you mentioned and also just how unique he is.

Well when i was younger my favorite used to be vegeta but later on I changed my mind because I got tired of him getting his ass kicked every time he showed up. It was so ridiculous...

Eventually though when i started to prefer the the earlier chapters of dragonball as opposed to the Z sagas I started to like goku the most. That kid is just so hilarious its insane  In the Z episodes he also gets most of the badass transformations first ( like SSJ and SSJ3 ) and he has the best fights out of anyone in the series.

My favorite must be Piccolo or Gohan. I can't choose. They are, like, the same, if I have to say it.
Ever since the beginning of Dragonball Z, the two of them have had a strong bond.

Why Piccolo? As told before, his backstory. It's quite complex, really. His father sent him on a ship to Earth of all planets, where he was created by the son of Katattsu splitting into two parts. There, he and himself fought eachother (!). He got stronger than himself, and in the end, he fused with himself, and that's not including a third Namekian that he fused with.
If you think about it, Kami and Piccolo are the same person, but two parts of the personality and abilities of the son of Kattatsu.
And then, he can grow larger, he can grow his arms longer, he can use magic, he is strong, he is really intelligent (hey, Piccolo is Kami, Piccolo Jr. and Nail in one body, that's got to be a really high IQ).

Why Gohan?

Because of that he is neither one of the humans, nor one of the Saiya-jins. He is torn between these two identities. His father wants him to be more of a Saiya-jin, but his mother more of a human.
He is the sole one who has latent power, which he can use, and strangely enough, none of the other half-Saiya-jins show that ability. He is the most normal of the fighters, except for Kuririn and Yamcha. But they were shuffled aside so fast that I have no real conception over their character development as fighters and humans.

Wow, lots of Gohan love! :D

At the expense of joining the bandwagon, my favorite character is also Gohan.

Of all the characters in the series, I think he has one of the biggest character developments in the series. Sure, he's a crybaby at first, but even within the span of one arc, he changes significantly. In the Saiyan arc he's a crybaby, but by the Freeza arc, he's gained much more belief in himself and can control his power a little more than before.

Also, even if he only contributes a little to defeating the main antagonist in most of the arcs and movies, at least he gets to save the day in place of Goku once in a while.

Piccolo. I just feel that he is the most developed character.

He went from being the son of the Demon King, to befriending Gohan, then to finding out he's a Namekian and finally to fusing with Kami.

My favorite character of all of Dragon Ball? Jeez.

Well, it's probably Son Goku, to be honest. I like his charmingly childish, pure-hearted personality, but at the same time his love for combat. I even like how ridiculously selfish he can be at times, to the point of putting others in danger. You almost can't fault him at all for it, though, because he has this way about him which makes you forgive him, even though you're rolling your eyes. I have a feeling it's how a lot of his friends and family feel about him.

Still, I definitely have a soft spot for Gohan. Why? Because I felt like for a huge chunk of the story, I was following along with him, on his trail, his journey, watching him develop. I wanted badly for him to become that great hero Toriyama seemed to intend him to be, and was happy at the end of the Cell arc that he had saved the world. Even if he lost his position in the Buu arc, I was still rooting for him. I like the idea of this boy with a great heroic father who doesn't quite enjoy the fight as much, but has this potential to become a great fighter. To have the potential to do something you actually dislike, and have to reach that potential to save the world, even if it's against your nature, because you're the only one who can. That was a great element.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Definitely Kid Goku. It's why I love the original Dragon Ball and why "Path to Power" is my favorite of the Dragon Ball movies. All that innocence and power rolled into one. Kid Goku(GT) is my favorite person to play as in the games.

Same, especially as a SS3.

All that power in such a little package. :P

My favourite character is Gohan. I always felt like I related to him the most, in fact I even had his hairstyle that he had during Namek for a while. I know the average joe will tell you that Goku is the main character of Dragon Ball Z, but to be honest I will always give that title to Gohan.

But in all honestly I would say I like pretty much all the characters in the Dragon Ball Universe. It would very hard for me to rank them.

Definitely Kuririn. I love following his development as both a martial artist and a character in the early stories, and he tends to be involved in some of my favourite fights (my absolute favourite being his tournament match against Piccolo - who is, incidentally, my second-favourite character).

It helps that he didn't suffer as much as Yamcha or some of the other early characters with the addition of new cast members, continuing to play a role right through to the Cell arc. And even after that, seeing him finally married and completely content is one of my favourite parts of the Boo arc, especially considering how insecure he was when he initially appeared.

Plus, he just seems like he'd be an awesome guy to go drinking with.

I used to be undecided on this matter thinking it was either Goku or Piccolo... so I chose Gohan as a compromise. That was like a decade ago, though.

Nowadays, Goku is definitely my favorite. I love his simple and happy outlook on life in general and I try to tackle life with as much energy as him. Not saying I wanna be a Goku clone or anything, but I can't bring myself to be as serious as guys like Piccolo, Vegeta, or Tenshinhan.

Oh, and there's Kamesen'nin. He's awesome. He's the closest thing I have to a "dark side" that I can identify with. Had he stayed relevant, he might've been my favorite in the way that Iroh is my favorite in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Goku. He's such an entertaining character and really fun to watch in action. Here's a character that can go from sweet naive big-appetite guy to martial arts badass on the flip of a coin. I really like that. X3
He's been my favorite from the beginning. Vegeta's a close second.

Goku does have really bad time management when it comes to certain things outside of battle though. ^^;
On hiatus.

I usually like compact heroes the most, the smaller the better, which is why Crybaby Gohan and 12 year old Goku/GT Goku are some of my favourites, but I also like the bald characters because they are bald.
