Did Lunch EVER find Tenshinhan?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Did Lunch EVER find Tenshinhan?

Post by Dayspring » Sat Apr 24, 2010 11:46 am

I just reread book 17 and it says Lunch wasn't at the reunion because she left with Tenshinhan at the 23rd budokai. In the daizenshuu, it's revealed she never found him because he and Chaozu were nomads. So what's the story? Did she actually never find him, or did she live with them from the 23rd Budokai up to when they left for Kami's training?

I'm pretty sure it was said she left to go chasing after him, not that she actually left with him.

Yeah, only the anime shows that she ever actually found him. As far as we know, she never actually did. Or Tenshinhan just killed her, cut her body up, threw her in a river, and failed to ever mentioned this any of his companions ever again. Which would explain why we never see her after the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai.

Actually we do see her after the 23rd budokai, but the page was part of a special holiday themed insert, so it wasn't collected in the tankobon (was it in the Kanzenban, though?). The strip (5 or 6 panels long) showed what she, Bulma, the people at Roshi's and the people at Kaio's were doing at X-mas. So it takes place on the day Ginyu and Goku arrive on Namek at a point prior to the battles; most likely a point prior to Vegeta sensing Gohan and Krillin's ki as they made their way to Saichoru's. We would have seen her in volume 42, but Toriyama was worried nobody would remember her, so he swapped her head for #17s.

I'd actually forgotten that existed, although I don't think I've ever seen it. Still, I don't know if I'd count that as part of the story, since, as far as I know, the Dragon World doesn't even celebrate Christmas, does it? Lunch also appears in one of the title pages during the late Saiya-jin arc, but I wouldn't consider that canon that she stopped by Kame House either.

This is true, but since it didn't happen, it... well, didn't happen, and my ridiculous scenario could still be true. Oh, and wasn't part of Toriyama's motivation for ditching that panel also because he'd forgotten how to draw her?

In other Toriyama manga that share continuity with DB, the Santa Claus aspects of Christmas are observed. Aside from at Roshi's place (which is nearest Dragonworld's Japan where it was seen celebrated), nobody is doing Christmas stuff, anyway. It's just a matter of 'what are the characters doing at X-Mas time (meaning on December 24/25)?' Since this is the day everybody's fighting Ginyu and Freeza, all the secondary people were shown.

I don't remember seeing that part, at least, not in Daizenshuu 7. In fact, he had started drawing her. That's why #17 looks like a lumberjack; Lunch is in the mountains still looking for Tenshinhan.

Well, in the anime, she was seen crying in a bar because Tien died. Maybe she thinks he's dead

Uh... wasn't news of the fight against the Saiyans being broadcast over the radio? I think she knew he was dead, haha.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Is this really the reason? But Snow, Android #8, Upa, Bora, and Namu appeared during that time.

I don't believe Namu made an appearance in the manga. But the others you mentioned did.

Not in the manga, as far as I can see. Unless the skinny old man with the turban and beard is supposed to be him.

It looks nothing like him to me. You might as well say that the guy in the panel above him is Future Trunks on a visit to the past.

Edit: Sorry for the poor quality, but...is this really meant to be Namu?

In the anime it's clearly Namu.

I know, but that's the reason he gave in the explanation (in daizenshuu 7). Weird logic, as Lunch was present up to book 17 of the manga, even as far as book 24, 25, or 26 for those getting the Jump installments. He probably just forgot everything she did after the 21st budokai arc. :P

Jinzoningen #8, Upa, Bora, Namu did appear on the conclusion of the Bebi arc when Goku evacuated everone from Earth after the use of the Black Star/Ultimate Dragon Balls.
