DBK - What does "Hybrid Blu-Ray" mean?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

DBK - What does "Hybrid Blu-Ray" mean?

Post by saiyanprincess » Fri Apr 30, 2010 4:36 pm

Hi guys

I'm seriously looking into importing the first Blu Ray season of Dragonball Kai from Rightstuf.com, The issue i'm having is my blu-ray player is not multi-regional and Sony have not made it easy to get it unlocked.

I'm pretty dim when it comes to tech talk, I'm wondering what Rightstuf means by a "Hybrid" Format? Also does anybody know if the blu-ray discs are multi regional like the orange brick boxsets? I'm guessing no... However I do have a DVD player which can play Region 1 DVD's so I may just have to buy the DVD sets.

What do you all advise?

Thankyou so much

Sarah

While I can't give you all the answers, i'll try my best. From what I can gather, "Hybrid" generally means that the DVD contains more than two languages (since some of their DVDs have s (sub) and d (dub) listed) so people know what they are buying for sure. While I don't know if the sets are region free, I know FUNimation have released multi-region Blu-Rays before. Ouran High School Host Club for example was region A and B product so it played on my B region player without problem. You'd be best to wait until someone here has confirmed what regions it has (They should be getting it soon if they ordered from Rightstuff).

I may as well ask if you've used Rightstuff before since it would probably be cheaper to use another service either in the UK or from other sites like playusa. I can help there if you want. I hope this reply helps!

While it is not definitely correct, the Amazon listing say that it is only Region 1.

Not only Amazon but a bunch of other stores say it's region 1 only. That means that people in Europe (included me) won't be able to play it on their region 2 Blu-ray players. They say that all Blu-ray players that are sold officially must have a region lock on them (please correct me if I'm wrong) but both my PS3 and Sony Vaio laptop can play the Broly Double Feature (region 1). And I'm willing to bet that this Blu-ray set will also play without any problem. But I've never tested this on, for example, a home theatre set so don't take my word for it. :?

Keep in mind Blu-ray doesn't use Regions 1, 2, 3, etc. They use a new region schematic. Previously, many releases weren't actually region locked (like the Broli double feature 'test release'). However, I believe FUNimation's more recent releases actually have been region locked.

To answer the initial question though, "Hybrid" is just RightStuf's method of saying that the disc has both the native Japanese and English dubbed versions. It's on both DVD and Blu-ray listings.

Thankyou for the great information, I think I will just remain patient until you guys get the release and can confirm whether it is region locked or not.

I know my home cinema theatre is region locked, It won't play Region 1 DVD's however i don't own any American Blu Rays So I have been unable to see if these will play. It's Sony so i'm assuming they have region locked the player which is a huge shame. - But no shock.

I would love to see the Blu Ray release, But if the worst comes to worse, I'll simply just buy (begrudgingly) the Kai DVD's and put them on my DVD Upscaler.

I may use Amazon.com instead of Rightstuf. In the past I have used both sites, And both have given me faultless service. However Amazon can work out cheaper which is always a bonus as importing them can cost a bomb.

Thankyou so much guys! Let me know how you get on with them as soon as you get them. X

The blu-ray release is region A and B. :)

Also, if you want a good place to buy the blu-ray/DVD from I would recommend AxelMusic. I know I mention them a lot, I just think their good for people buying from Europe. You don't have to worry about custom charges, so that's a good thing. :)
