When does Freeza Saga end?
When does Freeza Saga end?
Is the time when Future Trunks owns Mecha Freeza and King Cold included into Freeza Saga? Or is it Cyborgs Saga, since Future Trunks came to warn people about Cyborgs?
When exactly Freeza Saga ends and Cyborgs Saga starts?

Toei consider Dragon Ball Z episode 118 ("That There is Earth, Papa... The counter attack of Freeza, Father and Son") as the first episode of the Artificial Human arc. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
Various sources say various things. The Dragonbook puts it as part of the Jinzoningen arc. Kanzentai puts it with the Freeza arc, and apparently so does the Toei website, if I'm not mistaken?
I always put it as part of the overall Cell arc, not Freeza. And here's my reasoning: A story arc is, obviously, meant to tell a story. In the case of the Freeza arc, that story is Yamucha and the others were killed, and the dragonballs were rendered useless, so the surviving gang travels to Namek to collect their dragonballs. However, a ruthless tyrant named Freeza is doing the same thing, as is Vegeta. Vegeta eventually teams up with the good guys for a showdown with Freeza. In the end, it's up to Goku who eventually transforms into a legendary Super Saiya-jin and defeats Freeza, but in the wake of their fight, the entire planet is destroyed. The Namekians come to earth, and their dragonballs are used to bring the fallen warriors back to life.
See? At the end of the arc, the characters have accomplished what they set out to do. And then there's a time skip. Time skips almost always signify a new arc. Freeza's appearance after that is just a cameo. It's like Scarecrow showing up at the beginning of The Dark Knight just for Batman to immediately subdue him. You wouldn't say that that opening scene is actually part of Batman Begins because it features a prominent villain from that film.
Anyway, that's how I think.
EDIT: This is also why I consider the Uranai Baba stuff as part of the Red Ribbon arc and not its own separate entity. The army has been defeated, but it's not until after the Uranai Baba stuff that the characters accomplish what they set out to do (revive Bora) followed by a time skip.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
For me the "epilogue" days of the Freeza arc was when they were wishing everybody back afterwards and discovered Goku wasn't coming back intentionally. Freeza as a cyborg was just there to show off how powerful Trunks was, who in turn was ushering in the next saga, so I don't consider Freeza+Cold's deaths as part of the Freeza saga. Plus Freeza was cybernetic at that point, so it already feels different.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
For me it's:
Saiyan Saga - First episode of Z up until Bulma, Krillin and Gohan blast off into space.
Freeza Saga - Bulma, Krillin and Gohan blast off into space up until the Namekians are sent to their new home.
Android Saga - When Gohan has a tutor up until Gohan goes to high school.
Buu Saga - Gohan goes to high school until the last episode of Z.
I only consider there to be 4 sagas -- you get different arcs within them, sure, but I prefer to define a saga as a whole. I do this by considering the main villain/s.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
In the manga, the transition between "Yay we're back on Earth! Let's gradually revive everyone!" and "Oh no, Freeza's alive and coming to Earth!" happens within the span of a single chapter, so it's pretty easy to lump all the Mecha Freeza stuff in as a continuation of the Freeza arc.
In the anime, however, not only do those events take place in completely separate episodes, but there's an entirely unrelated filler arc between them. By far the longest chunk of filler in the series, no less. Garlic Jr. definitely has nothing to do with Freeza, so it leaves three big possibilities: 1) Everything from the Namekkians leaving Earth until King Cold's death is still the Freeza arc, including all the Garlic Jr. episodes; 2) The Namekkians leaving Earth starts a "pause" in the Freeza arc, then there's the Garlic Jr. arc, followed by a brief "unpause" of the Freeza arc up until King Cold's death; 3) The Freeza arc ends when the Namekkians leave Earth, then there's the Garlic Jr. arc, followed by the Cell arc. There's a few other possibilities, but those seem to be the most obvious and common ones.
But as far as I'm concerned, Gokuu basically did kill Freeza, and that's where that story ended. After that, some guy claiming to be Freeza came to Earth just so we could get an idea of how strong Trunks is. Trunks's strength is important to the plot, of course, because it gives us an idea of how strong the new villains are.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
Good point. I almost forgot about that. The manga does occasionally transition to different arcs in mid-chapter, like the end of the Red Ribbon into the 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai as well. That does make it a bit more difficult to state chapter numbers for when things begin and end.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
Another thing guys, 195-199 of the Ano-yo-chi Budokai arc maybe part of the Artificial Humans/Cell arc but it is part of the Great Saiyaman Saga according to FUNimation's Saga partitions as well the Namek arc 36-74 divided into Namek and Captain Ginyu Sagas too.
More to the point Because of Mecha Freeza appeared on Earth, that makes the Trunks arc the final part of the Freeza arc.Gaffer Tape wrote:Various sources say various things. Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
Maybe so. The Freeza Arc (Episodes 36~116) and the AH/Cell Arc (Episodes 117~194) are too in between on the Garlic Jr. filler arc. That makes the Freeza arc end on Ep. 116.Gaffer Tape wrote:Um, no, I was arguing the exact opposite of that...

That scene where Piccolo watches over Gohan as he does his homework at home, and he walks off into the forest? That's the last scene of the Freeza arc.

Dragonball LANDMARK and Dragonball FOREVER, the 2 official Kanzenban guides puts Freeza and Cold on Earth on "jinzouningen" (androids) saga.
But I don't think there's an "official rule" for it.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
I'd put it as right before the time skip. I'm not happy with the way the comic does this mid-chapter though. But I'm not particularly happy with a lot of things about the Freeza/Cell transition, so whatever.
As far as I know the Freeza/Cell transition is the only one that occurs mid-chapter.
Yeah, me too. In fact, I group the Saiyan and Freeza arcs together as one long story arc.Gaffer Tape wrote:This is also why I consider the Uranai Baba stuff as part of the Red Ribbon arc and not its own separate entity. Huh? Red Ribbon ends at 112 and the tournament begins at 113. The time skip happens between chapters. There are a few prologue-y pages of chapter 113 before we get to the cover, but those pages are definitely part of chapter 113, not 112.Gaffer Tape wrote:The manga does occasionally transition to different arcs in mid-chapter, like the end of the Red Ribbon into the 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai as well.

Oh, really? I always thought that page after the one with narration and Goku running in the sunset were part of the same chapter. I didn't know Toriyama was giving a teaser opening to the next chapter. I guess I should have counted pages.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
To me, sagas in Dragon Ball can be defined through the question: "could the story actually end here, with no more threats/missions ahead?". That makes for three main sagas in the manga and Kai:
- Freezer saga, ending with the one-year gap when there's no proof that there will ever be any threat to fight or any mission to complete.
- Cell saga, ending with the seven-years gap when there's no proof that there will ever be any threat to fight or any mission to complete.
- Boo saga, ending... well, at the end of the story, when there's no proof that there will ever be any threat to fight or any mission to complete.
The manga is separated into those three sagas/eras to me. However, I do separate the series into seasons so that there are less heavy packs, keeping with Anime Comics (sometimes called Animanga) seasons, which seem fitting to me. Therefore, the Freezer arc is divided into:
- Season 1: 17 episodes, ending with the announcement of the next season ("so there is hope after all, let's all head for Namek" and everybody laughs while daylight shows up again after a rough day).
- Season 2: 19 episodes I think, ending with the announcement of the next season ("will Goku be back to face the greatest threat ever? Find out in the next season!")
- Season 3: a whole season to fight the greatest enemy ever and finally make everything right. Ends with episode 54, no need to explain much I guess.
- Freezer saga, ending with the one-year gap when there's no proof that there will ever be any threat to fight or any mission to complete.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
I think it's not necessary to have a definitively "end" to considere ona saga's end.
For example..
The real beggining of Androids and Cell saga was on Red Ribon saga.
But it's weird to think that Red Ribon saga ends only after Cell's death.

Re: When does Freeza Saga end?
Not really the same thing. Dr Gero wasn't mentioned at all in the Red Ribbon storyline, and you could say the only hint of the character was the existence of #8 (who at that point seemed more like just another eccentric Red Ribbon Army character). The Cell arc isn't so much the continuation of the Red Ribbon arc as it is its sequel.EnmaDaiou wrote:I think it's not necessary to have a definitively "end" to considere ona saga's end.
