Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Music from the movies being used in the TV episodes

Post by Vhanos » Thu May 20, 2010 1:58 am

Don't know if this has been examined. If it has I apologize.

I'm sure those who take notice of it know that the music from the movies were used in the tv episodes. There are songs that don't too and are made off the tv series. So not all of the music in the dragon ball tv series come from the movies.

When the series had its original airing in Japan the movies were also coming out in theatres. Each of the movies came out during certain times alongside when certain episodes of the tv series were airing. What I take notice of is that the background music from each of the movies starts to make an appearance in the tv series after a while when after each certain movie has been released. The music from the movies start to get used in the show after the movies have been around long enough.

What follows below is a listing of when the scores from each of the movies first made their appearance in the tv episodes.

For the original Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Movie 1: I believe at episode 53 or somewhere at the fortune teller Baba saga

Dragon Ball Movie 2: Episode 81- Goku goes to demon land to rescue Princess Misa

Dragon Ball Movie 3: Episode 133 - Beginning of the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament where the cast become adults

For Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball Z Movie 1: Episode 21 - Arrival of the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa on earth

Dragon Ball Z Movie 2: Episode 47 - The Nameks battle Frieza's henchmen

Dragon Ball Z Movie 3: If you count the Bardock special, the first appearance was in it, and episode 66 - Goku arrives on Namek to help friends when they are beaten by the Ginyu Force

Dragon Ball Z Movie 4: Episode 97 - Frieza launches a blast at planet Namek's core

Dragon Ball Z Movie 5: Not sure but I think either somewhere around the Garlic Jr. Saga or at episode 120 when Trunks defeats Frieza

Dragon Ball Z Movie 6: Episode 141 - Piccolo fuses with Kami and also Cell makes his appearance revealed

Dragon Ball Z Movie 7: Episode 161 - Vegeta fights Cell's perfect form

Dragon Ball Z Movie 8: Episode 191 - Gohan defeats Cell in kamehameha battle

Dragon Ball Z Movie 9: Episode 200 - Gohan goes to high school (Start of Buu saga)

Dragon Ball Z Movie 10: Episode 234 - Majin Buu makes his attack on Kaioshin and Gohan

Dragon Ball Z Movie 11: Episode 246 - Super Saiyan 3 Goku fights Majin Buu and Buu rebels against Babidi

Dragon Ball Z Movie 12: Episode 273 - Goku and Vegeta enter the inside of Buu's body

Dragon Ball Z Movie 13: Episode 290 - Ubuu sets to fight Goku (series nearing its end)

Now if others want to verify what I said I will discuss more about it. Don't know if many people gathered the same thing but I thought it would be refreshing to talk about this. Been quite some time since I watched many episodes together with the original Japanese music.

The musical scores from the movies were certainly reused in the episodes. But it isn't a bad thing. That being so keeps it from having the same music being used all the time and getting really old. In Dragon Ball Kai it took until episode 55-56 for new music to appear. I guess the movies did serve a good purpose. New music comes after every once in a while in the original Dragon Ball and Z when they keep going along. When I see this compared to some of the other long running animes Dragon Ball is pretty good about playing new musical scores to mix it up or add on.

You're right. Good ear, but someone beat you to this a long time ago.

Most of my favorite BGM pieces are originally from the movies.

Thanks for showing me to that site.

I've been looking on youtube and viewed some tracks. The site tells the list of tracks that I saw on youtube.

I was wrong about movie 7. I thought it was episode 163 but then I realized it was 161 and then looked at the site and it confirmed that. I edited my post.

Don't know about movie 13. I'm going to check episodes 289 and 290.

Do they tell what tracks were the most and least used?

Not yet, but that's another thing on my "to-do" list. It'll be in the "BGM Breakdown" section when I finish it.

This topic'll probably be moved to the Music forum sooner or later, BTW.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
