Favorite Kageyama Songs?

Post by Mewzard » Tue Jun 29, 2010 1:38 am

When it comes to DBZ's music, there's one man who I always look back to with a certain fondness and a smile: Hironobu Kageyama. He's one of my favorite Japanese musicians. As with any long career, he's built up quite a library of songs. The question I ask is thus: What are your favorite Kageyama Songs?

For my list, I guess I can give my top five Kageyama Songs:

5. Hikari-no-sasu Mirai-e (Infinite World opening)

4. Genkai Battle (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX ending)

3. Cha-La Head-Cha-La (DBZ first opening)

2. Unmei no Hi Tamashii vs Tamashii (SSJ2 Gohan transformation insert song)

1. Soldier Dream (Saint Seiya second opening)

So, what would be your favorite Kageyama songs?

Can we include JAM Project songs? If so, definately "Crush Gear Fight". If not, "Miraculous Flame! Burn Up!" (Burst Limit Opening Song).

I really like Ginga-no Hoshikuzu ~ Stardust of the Milky Way. It's from the Super Survivor CD.

Are you aware that Hironobu has a band called "JAM Project"? I was asking if I could include songs from said band.

I did put Genkai Battle on my own personal list, a JAM Project song.

Though, I stick with my personal favorite song being Soldier Dream by Kageyama (with BROADWAY). Awesome song, and catchy (both English and Japanese versions).

I really like "Hikari no Tabi '96" it's a much slower version of "Hikari no Tabi" with a piano in the background.

My two favorites from Mr. Kageyama are Unmei No Hi and Marugoto. I love the Unmei because it's a very intense and deep song, whereas Marugoto has that upbeat sound that I love to hear every now and again.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

I feel sorry for Kai, as no song is going to be able to top Unmei no Hi as used with SSJ2 Gohan's transformation. The song's easily one of my favorites, such a memorable scene.

Still, I've grown most fond of Soldier Dream. Considering how late I did get into Saint Seiya, within months, it became one of my favorite shonen manga. Oh, Toei royally screwed up the anime far worse than anything they did to Dragon Ball, but we did get some good music from it, at least.

Most of Kageyama's work in anime was between DBZ and Saint Seiya (The anime of which ended the same year as Z began, iirc). He also did a lot of work on the Z games, he did several Super Sentai songs, and a few other animes, he did one or two songs here and there.

To many to list, but Saikyo no Fusion is one of my all time favs, just such a catchy bad ass song. I'd love to hear an English take on it.

Now, see, for some reason, I don't like the original "Mightiest of Fusions". The delivery isn't as good to my ears. But then I heard the live version first. And I just think he does the song so much more justice when he does it as a duet with someone else. It helps that said someone else is Endou Masaaki, and those two together make excellent songs with great harmony. That said, I want to add "Sonic Drive" to that list.

Songs with Mr. Kageyama alone though, is a difficult choice. People are going to call heresy on me for this, but sometimes, I can find Kageyama's delivery annoying. God bless him, yes, he does put all his heart into the songs, and that's a sign of a great talent that they will do so. But it's just a personal thing, that I find. His delivery can be a little annoying. I know exactly what bits of delivery I'm talking about, but I'm afraid I can't explain it very well.

However, I still do love a lot of his songs. It's just my personal favourite singer for any Dragonball Z image song is actually Ishihara Shinichi.

Anyway, on topic, if I had to choose some songs by Mr. Kageyama alone... Well, I want to say "The Day of Fate - Spirit vs. Spirit", but that's a little obvious. I also am going a little off it at the moment. I love the song, but it's one of those phases where you want to like something else. Excuse me, while I just go to the faithful 13 CD set.

Okay, now I've got the booklet to look at, I see one straight away. "That Guy is Son Gokuu". "The Unrivalled Full Course Meal, Under Heaven" is also growing on me too. "The Extraordinary Mightiest vs Mightiest" is a good one I like too, though I prefer the little bit of it on the end of "Kageyama's Power Medley". (As it happens, "Battle Spectacle Medley" in the booklet is rather stereotypically Japanese, with "Medrey".)

As well, as that there are "You are the Hero", "The Hope on the Blue Winds", "Silent Night, Morning Moon" and "If I Won't Do It, Then Who the Hell Will?"

... I'm terrible at picking favourite songs. I'm usually so lax about music, that I like too many things. Or at least tolerate them and then sort of like them.

EDIT: Oh! I know! A nice obscure one as well. The opening theme for Psychic Force 2, as we have the game here. "Pure win", I believe some would say.

Hmm, that may be, but I guess it's mainly the beat and lyrics that really grab me with that song.

Don't get me wrong. I love the lyrics too. It's just, again, I think these are done better when Messrs Kageyama and Endou are doing this as a duet together. It seems to fit the idea of "Mightiest of Fusions" better to have two people 'fusing' their voices, after all, right?

Unmei No Hi ~Tamashi vs. Tamashi~
Was Aoi Kaze no Hope done by him?
