Anime Labs Youtube Videos

Post by frozie » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:15 am

I'm looking through my old VHS tapes and here's what I have from them:

- Battle against Freezer, from slightly before Goku turns Super Saiyan, to about when they make the wish to transfer everyone to Earth
- Early android saga, from when Gohan and Krillin sense Freezer's energy coming and the battle against Trunks, to the battle between Vegeta and Android 19
- Buu Saga, from Vegeta being turned into a Majin and Fighting Goku to Satan trying to befriend Boo
- Buu saga, from Boo destroying cities to the first part of the Gotenks / Boo battle
- Buu saga, early part of the Vegetto / Boo fight
- Dragon Ball GT, from the beginning until they get to that planet where everyone's trying to rip them off for money
- All the movies, plus Bardock and Future Trunks tv specials

I would assume it's useless now because it was a long time ago, but back in the 90s I looked everywhere for the Cell saga VHS but it seemed they weren't available anywhere, so I assumed they were never done, same for the early Saiyan saga. I eventually found the Chinese version of the Cell Saga on VHS but they were not subtitled, and I couldn't follow because at the time the french manga translation was only up to the Freezer saga so I didn't know the story after

I know Anime Labs gets a bad rep for the insane amount of swearing, but there were some redeeming features IMO. The one thing that I liked about the Anime Labs subs was that they seemed to be recorded directly from the original TV broadcast. So sometimes it would cut to ads and, when they weren't cut out, you got to see some cranky Japanese suntanning creams or cereal ads that were playing during the broadcast (sometimes featuring DBZ characters). Sometimes between episodes you'd get the announcement for some kind of kids Dragon Ball contest that was organized and they had something like "make sure you have your submissions in before x date 1991!" or something like that, it was kind of a neat thing. Like before the Bardock TV special in the beginning of the VHS they recorded something that was on TV advertising the film, saying something like "it will be the story of the real father of Goku! Don't miss it!"

EDIT:

On the daizex page:
http://www.daizex.com/guides/rumors/fan ... ogue.shtml

Every example they're giving of Anime Labs dialogues are from VHS that I have, another sign that its possible the episodes I couldn't find were simply never done. I can't be sure, but the signs seem to point toward it

EDIT 2:

Okay, I got a bunch of videos uploaded from the tapes

I organized them in 4 playlists:

Curses and bad language:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... 9088E5F06C
Basically, f-bombs and random swears and unsavory language

Anime Labs Randomness:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... A3AC5FC3B8
Some weird messages Anime Labs has been adding in their tapes

Ads and Promos
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... 816FDDF00B
Basically, things like cereal ads or promos for Dragon Ball Z films that found their way on the tapes

Other random stuff
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... 7917F9CD1B
Basically funny dialogue, though not necessarily swears, and whatever else doesn't fit in the other categories

Do you think you could rip some clips and throw them up onto Youtube? I'd really like to see how they translate stuff compared to Mr.Simmons. Sorry I don't have much in the way of an answer though.

I could, but I think I'd need permission from the mods before I could post the videos here though. Maybe they might allow very short clips for illustration purposes, I don't know

Usually so long as it's not blatant "FULL EPZ" they're pretty okay with little bits and pieces of episodes being linked. But yeah good thinking to check.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with a few clips. Just not entire episodes.

I'm not really going against the mods...but considering this is "AnimeLabs" we're talking about, would a full episode or two be so bad, if only for nostalgia's sake?

Someone upload the very nostalgic "Come out, you candy-ass faggot!" line. :P

Would appreciate the upload as well, I've searched everywhere for their fansubs and haven't found anything.

I'd love to see Goku telling Vegeta to take Nappa "back to your fucking home planet" or whatever that line was. It was so out-of-character for Goku. Haha!

I'll admit, when I saw the subject line for this topic, I did allow myself to have a rather cynical little line of "Of course not, they had a hard enough time translating any of it". It's fun to contrast what I make a line into, and what they make a line into though. Whereas they go out their way to make a line "badass!" or "HARDCOOOOORE!" with lots of "TOTALLY COOL SWEARING! [insert way too many exclamation marks]", I actually go out of my way to avoid swearing in my translations, barring generally light swearing like "Hell" or "Damn", or the occasional "Crap" (that sounded a lot better in my head...), and only using 'proper' words like "Bastard!" when the situation necessitates it. And I rarely, raaaaarely use the "F-bomb" in my work.

Now, see, if AnimeLabs were to have translated something like... Ohh... I dunno, "Yankee-kun to Megane-chan / Yankee Boy and Little Miss Glasses / Flunk Punk Rumble(?)" (Whoo!), where the guys will swear because they're delinquents, or "Kyou Kara Ore Wa... / From Today On, I Am...", where again the guys will swear as they're out to be delinquents, then they would be in their element. But then, "Yankee Boy and Little Miss Glasses" wasn't out until 2006...

I love these guys for getting me into the Japanese version of the show way back in the year 2000. It had me believe the proper name for Freezia was Freezer(I actually like this name better). It allowed me to see the Mecca-Freezer arc and movies 12 and 13 in all their over-the-top swearing glory. Me and my brothers thought it was hilarious, particularly the “you destroyed my house” rant in movie 13, but over time when I watched certain episodes in subtitles I noticed they weren't quite the same. It wasn't until last year when I discovered this site that I learned that those old bootleg videos that my oldest brother borrowed 10 years may not have been so accurate in their translations.

I'll post more tomorrow, chime in if you have a specific request

Also, I noticed I actually don't have the film 1 in VHS and some of the films were translated by another group than Anime Labs

Vegeta owes a lot of money to the swear jar.

What were the ratings on these, colorful tapes?

Don't let FUNimation hear that.

Why? I'm pretty sure FUNimation already knows that under-the-table fansubbers don't apply to ratings boards.
