Goku Supplement

Post by Michi » Tue Jan 11, 2005 5:02 pm

Maybe this is kinda odd to be saying this, but I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at this translation for the GT special's name. "Goku Gaiden" as "Goku Supplement"... It just.. makes it sound like it's a vitamin you have to take or something. ^^;
I've always translated gaiden kinda like "side story" or "another story". Take the video games Ninja Gaiden or Phantasy Star Gaiden for example. Translating those games as Ninja Supplement or Phantasy Star Supplement just sounds weird. :P In Ninja Gaiden's case, it's a series of games, so it's more like "Ninja Stories". But Phantasy Star Gaiden really is a side story to the main series of game, like the GT special. I know the word "supplement" has the same idea as a "side story" or an "additional story" but.. ... I don't think it gives people the same idea as "gaiden" really would.

That's just me being picky and dedicating an entire topic to it because I'm getting over the flu right now and have nothing better to do. It's not like I think the translation will be changed just because I brought this up. Haha. I'm just curious, I guess.

Phantasy Star! Damn, I can't wait for February 25th...err, anyway...

Yeah, Gaiden was always said to mean 'supplement' to me, so as a side story, Phantasy Star Gaiden is a supplement to the core story. *shrug*

Yeah, but I wouldn't actually translate it as "Phantasy Star Supplement" if I was giving something at title. o_o; How would that look on a title screen? :lol:

February 25th? Are you talking about Phantasy Star Trilogy? 'cause it's not happening.. or at least it's not gonna happen that early. ^_^;

Phantasy Star Generation: 2, the remake of PSII. I'm importing the remakes as they come out in Japan.

Ooh, I've been watching the Sega rereleases for some time. How much are you paying/have been paying for them?

And it is just me, or did they seriously screw up Nei's ears in the redrawn art?

They seem fine to me, although I do prefer that late 80s/early 90s style which seems to take a leaf from Rumiko Takahashi's art. XD

Ja, Nei and the others got more drastic overhauls than Alisa and Co. in Phantasy Star Generation: 1 did. I'm...sorta indifferent. Some drawings look great, some look...eh. And in Nei's case, I think her appearance changing (note the lace, which is a greater change than the ears IMHO) is because they're going for a greater contast to Neifirst. But, 'tis the risk one takes in remaking a classic.

As for price, I paid $36 for PSG1 shipped to my house, and got it about 4 days after release. For PSG2...I'm actually taking a week off work to beat it (it's been a year and a half since the last remake, and after this there's still one to go O_o; ), so I'm gonna put a rush on the shipping. The games themselves are about $28-30 before shipping from most importers, though.

My, how very off-topic. It's the kind of thing you'll get it locked for.

The ears? They're both weird and long. That's good enough for me.

Back to the original topic at hand... Julian's on his way back to school, I believe, which is why he hasn't responded. However, being that the TV Special isn't actually a "side story" (in that it's not being told parallel to anything), and it's actually additional and adding to a story being told, the translation of "supplement" makes sense to me.

I don't mean side story as it's going on at the same time as the rest, but a side story that isn't part of the main series (which this is)... ^^; Extra story. Whatever. ^^;

Supplement still sounds like a vitamin to me. :X Oh well. ^^;;

And as for all this Phantasy Star stuff, WOW. I had no idea there were that many PS fans on this board. You people are awesome. I'd import those games if I had my Japanese PS2 yet, but I don't. And I think the frilly lolita lace on Nei is a bit more of a shocker than her ears changing a bit. I really don't like it. x_X I'm afraid of Rika/Fal's design when they get to IV.

This can be closed. ^^; It isn't going anywhere. ^_^;

Hopefully this will help clarify a few things:

    From the original post (and a few following) I was under the impression that the idea of the topic questioned the sound and feel of the word, rather than the definition.

    Judging by the constant return to definition, I'm really hoping my brain cells haven't left me.

    ...

    Doesn't "supplement" just sound awful in a title?

    YES, thank you Zackarotto! That is exactly what I was saying. =/

    I don't think gaiden would have the same sort of dictionary definition as "supplement" would, either (especially the food part! gaiden isn't the exact Japanese version of supplement at all! XD). English has tons of words for similar things, and Japanese usually doesn't. I just think for a title, translating gaiden more as something like "additional story" would make more sense.

    But I'm done, because no one cares as much as I do about it. ^_^;
