Nathan Johnson's Movie 13 Music
What did you think of it?
Did you enjoy the different style?
I personally loved it! It was a great, and a much needed change from the boring style he uses for Movie's 6, 7 and 9. It also add to the cinematic feeling and makes it feel like an actual movie.

Replacing Tapion's theme should be punished by death by firing squad.
In all seriousness, it was the same old soulless dribble that FUNimation pumps out for the Dragon Ball Z movies.

It's certainly not near what the japanese score had but it was a huge improvement and more unique over the poorly placed band music during movies 4, 5, 8 and 10.
Also, just to correct things, Nathan Johnson actually did the score for movie 13.

I'm pretty sure the credits said Mark Menza. Oh well, thanks anyway. Moving along, I really enjoyed the piece played when Tapion tells Trunks to kill him.

Re: Mark Menza's Movie 13 Music
I am a huge fan of Kukichi's music. I was exposed to the original score first, it just is Dragon Ball to me. I love it. I listen to it on its own as actual music. But I love instrumental music anyway.
That being said, I also really really like Menza's scores for the movies. I don't think they're soulless. There is a lot of talent that goes into scoring those movies. It is very atmospheric and haunting. And while the rock and roll stuff doesn't fit my idea of Dragon Ball, I still enjoy it very much as its own production.
My favorite part, musically, is when Goku is confronting Cooler in Movie 6. The music changes from the industrial pots and pans type percussion to the guitar riff from the intro score. The one that's present on the orange bricks. Kind of going full circle with the use of the intro music in the show as background. Like a bastard flipperbaby version of Cha-la!
What is kind of unprecedented and I don't think a lot of the detractors have payed much attention to it, but the Menza scores actually use quite a bit of silence. It's nothing like the Faulconor stuff.
Anyway, it's good stuff. But I find it really hard to hate any music that goes along with Dragon Ball. Except for that Ocean dub dribble and the hard-rock GT music.

This is my thought on the matter.Rory wrote:Replacing Tapion's theme should be punished by death by firing squad.

Re: Mark Menza's Movie 13 Music
Menza did the GT music as well. There must have been a corporate mandate to be as irritating as possible, because his random-ass guitar noodlings there are unbelievably bad compared to his generic but acceptable work on the movies.Innagadadavida wrote:Except for that Ocean dub dribble and the hard-rock GT music.
Anyway, that's about my opinion on the Menza and Johnson scores. They're both serviceable, but incredibly boring and generic. That goes for Johnson's work on the "Ultimate Uncut" releases as well. As far as replacement soundtracks go, the Faulconer one is still my favorite. It may be farther removed from the original score, but it at least has character and some standout tunes.

Re: Nathan Johnson's Movie 13 Music
For movie 13 specifically, it was alright. I think I've seen the movie with his score about twice, and I don't remember all of it. I do however, remember it being very atmospheric and cinematic. This was a massive step up from the "rock band" score that was in the previous movies. As Inna said, movie 13's dub score was by no means a rush job and it seemed like a lot of effort went into it.
Re: Nathan Johnson's Movie 13 Music
I like Nathan Johnson's music (especially in movie 2) but i can live without it. As for movie 13, its alright but not great. (in my opinion)
