I don't know if it's my favorite, but I love the choir piece from DBZ movie 3, the one that was also used in the Bardock special.

That one song in Movie 6 that plays as the 10,000 Cooler's run at Goku & Vegeta. And a lot of Movie 7's soundtrack. Sure, most of the songs were repeated a preposterous amount of times in the show, but they're good otherwise.

Man, it's so hard to choose. I really love the Tenshinhan/Chaozu piece from Dragon Ball Movie #3. Dragon Ball Z brings it back for Tenshinhan's death, and making it one of the most powerful scenes in the entire franchise. Dragon Ball Movie #2 also had that great demonic choir piece that was reused for Piccolo's death. Great, great stuff.

The first three Dragon Ball Z films were also pretty much an hour of solid, great scoring. Absolutely perfect work on Toei Animation's part.

I'm really fond of the insert song "Piccolo-san Daisuki." It's just so bubbly and adorable I can't help but like it.

OK. Mine is the choral piece in Dragonball movie 2 (Majin-Jo No Nemuri Hime [1987]), which I have talked about on and on and on here at this message board. The song has been re-used in Dragon Ball and Z, stripped of vocals, and released on the 5 disc BGM Daizenshuu set. Here are a few of my rants on the song (though it all started here):
SSj_Rambo [Jul 30, 2008] wrote:The thing that really impressed me about the Freeza Saga, and started my love of it, was the soundtrack (the Japanese one of course). The Saiya-jin Saga wasn't too great on the music (or maybe I just didn't notice it because of all of the fighting) and the Namek/Ginyu Saga's didn't really have anything new. But once the Freeza Saga came around we heard some new music and some songs that just fit the scenes they were used in perfectly.

For me, the greatest thing about the BGM of the Freeza Saga was that much needed/wanted use of the fourth piece of the The Sleeping Princess in the Devil’s Castle BGM collection. The song was first used for that movie back in July 1987 and was an awesome part of the film. The song then was not used until the end DBZ episode 027 when Piccolo was killed by Nappa in November 1989 (listen to it here). The song was then not used until the Freeza Saga, where it was much appreciated and used often.

The thing that I found most interesting about the songs use in the Freeza Saga (and DBZ as a whole) was that when the song was first used it was used as a kind of opening theme for the demon army, but for DBZ it was pretty much used as a death theme, being played when Piccolo died and in the Freeza Saga when Kuririn was gored by Freeza, when Vegeta died, when the flashback of Freeza killing the Saiya-jin race was played and in one or two other spots as well. I know the song is kind of dark and morbid but that is pretty much what the Freeza was, so I saw it as a perfect fit.

That's pretty much what first think of when I think about the Freeza Saga, and since the song was never again used (to the best of my knowledge) it really is something special about the Freeza Saga.

Did anyone else notice and like the music that was used throughout the Freeza Saga, or was it just me?
SSj_Rambo [Sep 13, 2008] wrote:My favorite vocal song from Dragonball has to be the untitled song that was used first in Dragonball movie 2 (when the hordes of demons first emerge), then in episode 81 and lastly in DBZ episode 27. It was included in the 5 CD Daizenshuu set (disc 5, track 3, piece 4) and that has been it's only release. This song also has a instrumental version that when used is only used in cases that do not pertain to demon related people (unlike the vocal version which I like better). It is one of the more dramatic songs in the series and it perfectly personifies the right feel whenever it is used.

You can listen to it here (the third and final time it was used): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNqoQTi963U
SSj_Rambo [Feb 19, 2009] wrote:Why yes, yes there is!

It's not that exact piece but it is what I believe to be the greatest choral piece used throughout the entire anime:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNqoQTi963U&fmt=18 (it starts at 0:36)

It was first used in July of 1987 in the theatrical film The Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle (DB Movie 3), and then again in September of 1987 for Dragonball episode 081, Goku Goes to the World of Spirits. It was first used in DBZ in episode 027, for the death of Piccolo, and was later recycled a few times (three, I think) for the Freeza Arc (most famously in Freeza's flashback of when he destroyed Planet Vegeta and in the episode right after 2nd Form Freeza first gores Kuririn, when the goring scene was replayed).

An interesting little tidbit on the song, is that the two variations of it (with the vocals and without the vocals) seem to be used in a pattern. For the two times the song was used in Dragonball, it was used as a sort of theme for the demons, and the vocals were included. When it was used for DBZ (for Piccolo's death) the song was played with the vocals, but as the scene faded out, the end of the song was played in its entirety, and that contained no vocals; perhaps to illustrate Piccolo's abandonment of his demonic traits, as he sacrifices himself for Gohan. All of the other times the song was used in DBZ, it was not for any demon related characters, and the vocals were never used. [Kunzait_83 really helped me notice this]

Sadly, only the vocal version has been released on CD: DragonBall & DragonBall Z: Daizenshuu (the five disc set); disc 5, track 3, piece 3.

Note: My curiosity and love of this song is actually the main reason I decided to become a member of this forum (after being a fan of the site for a while), since I first came here with a question about its usage and name: http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.php?t=7731
SSj_Rambo [May 10, 2009] wrote:For me it would have to be the choral piece used in Dragonball Movie 2, Dragonball episode 081, DBZ episode 027 and a few episodes in the Freeza Arc.

It was included on disc 5, track 2, piece 'd' of the 5 CD set (though sadly the instrumental version has never been released). You can listen to an example of the song hereat 3:29 (pretty badass ain't it!). I can go on and on and on about every aspect of this song and how it has been used (which I habve done here before), but you can basically sum it up by saying that it is an amazing dramatic piece, and if you take the time to watch the scenes it is used in (here's one), it seems sooooo much better.
SSj_Rambo [Jul 05, 2009] wrote:Man, I've gone over mine and why I like it so many times, I really need to just find my last post on it and just copy it here.

Anyway, it's the choral piece that is most famous for its use during Piccolo's death at the hands of Nappa; but it was first used in Dragonball episode 081, then in Dragonball Movie 2, during Piccolo's death, then a few times in the Freeza Arc (when Vegeta was killed, when Planet Vegeta was destroyed, when Kuririn was gored by Freeza, and I think one or two more times). There's a big pattern in its usages between demons (for the most part), but it's probably just coincidence. Here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNqoQTi963U
And here is Kunzait_83's insightful post.

I really agree with John on the demon choir from The Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle...but all of his links are broken! :(

I love the use of the many Makafushigi Adventure intrumentals in the films, Return My Gohan!! and The World's Strongest Guy to boot!!

It's awfully tough to pick a favorite. For the longest time, my favorite was "Coola's Multiplicity" from Movie 6 (mentioned also by jjgp1112), but I've since seen all of the movies, and now I have several favorites, with a tendency to lean toward the ones that haven't been released on CD. There's "Tullece Eats The Fruit" from Movie 3, not to mention "Running To Goku's House" from the first DragonBall film, "Corny Old Monster Movie" from Sleeping Princess, "Chaozu's Theme, Part 2" (which Yuugi mentioned) from Mystical Adventure.... and that's hardly even a fraction of my favorites.

(These names aren't official, if you're wondering... they're my own fan-given titles.)
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
