Fan popularity in Japan before DB Kai
I've always been curious about this. In the period from the ending of DBGT 1997, to 2009, when DB Kai was introduced, how were kids in Japan introduced to Dragonball?
Is Dragonball common knowledge in Japan like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are here(America)?

I'm pretty sure Dragon Ball was "common knowledge" during that time period. In fact, I heard somewhere that Goku is like Japan's Superman (correct me if I'm wrong). The biggest contribution was most likely those people in Japan that watched Dragon Ball back in the day and at some point told their children or younger relatives about it.
From November 2002 onward, they had the video games as well, so that probably helped introduce some to the series.

And I think merchendise was probably still available. I obviously don't know for sure, since I wasn't in Japan at that time.

I live in Japan since 2005.
And DB is always in evidence.
Video-games, arcade games, tv show, card games, toys...
Every prefecture has local channels that is broadcasting db anime episodes very often.
In tokyo, for example, tokyo mx chanel broadcasts dbz every thursday at 22:00.
I think it was not much different between 1997 to 2004.
I think everyone knows the main characters, but I already saw young kids commenting things like "did you see that guy named Trunks yesterday?".
