DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
I am looking to buy some DragonBall Z DVDs with some money that I have. I already own the Funimation Remastered "Orange Bricks" up to season 5 and I do enjoy them quite a bit. But, now that Kai has come out I am really loving this as well. The filler has been cut out and the voice acting and script is better by a long shot on the English dub when Kai is viewed uncut.
But, I actually did like some of the filler. Blasphemy... I know. Not all of it, mind you. I am very glad to see the overly long screaming and recycled animation has been done away with. But things like Gohans dinosaur friend dying and him meeting that robot that died for him really helped flesh out all of the emotional changes he was going through and showed how he was forced to grow up.
I really am torn between two loves. I don't know what I should do. I could just buy the remaining seasons of DBZ, or I could buy the whole Kai series. I am afraid I won't be able to do both. So I can pick only one.
What are your thoughts?

Re: DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
Well, it's up to you, I guess, based on what you really want, since the two versions of the series offer different "hooks." If you're looking for the best method of watching the original DBZ anime, filler n' all, then go for the FUNimation Dragon Boxes. They aren't quite caught up to "season five" yet, but they will be very soon. They're a lot closer than Kai is, at least.
If you're looking for an overall more approachable viewing experience, and a double-whammy of both the Japanese and a good dub, then snatch up 'Z Kai' instead. The "remastered" sets aren't recommended for either aspect.

But those can be pretty expensive and I would have to buy episodes I already have of "Z" all over again to make it to where I have every episode. If I were to buy the Dragon Boxes where my Orange Bricks left off I would be missing episodes due to the episodes not fitting if that makes sense.
So, it is more of a question of should I finish buying Z or just buy Kai and kiss the filler goodbye.

Just kidding. They're like $35 if you sell your Season sets you can get all 3 or 4.

Get Kai. It's much faster than Z, Good English dub (Based on everyone opinions because I haven't watched it myself!), HD quality (If you get the Blu-Ray one of course), New Japanese dub in Stereo, Fixed scenes and you can still watch the Gohan fillers on your Orange Brick but If you really desperate to watched the Gohan fillers in good quality (I assume you have an opinion that the Orange Brick have bad quality because if it's not, You can just do the first option) Get the Dragon Box but it comes with fillers and IMO sucky English dub.Cootie wrote:I am looking to buy some DragonBall Z DVDs with some money that I have. It sounds like your preferred way of watching is with English audio.
If that's the case, get Kai. No contest.

Haha, I always have to throw out my preference for the Dragon Boxes. Kai'll be around forever. The "remastered" sets aren't worth the plastic they're pressed on and need to be killed with fire.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Indeed. If you're a "dubbie", you'll really appreciate the Dragon Ball Z Kai dub. I've seen the first thirteen episodes dubbed, and I can tell you that they're of high quality.ohaimynameiserik wrote:It sounds like your preferred way of watching is with English audio.

Re: DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
I would say just get Z since you seem to prefer that overall.

Re: DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
Honestly, I would say that depends on your opinion of the dub. If you want a better English dub, get Kai. If you don't particularly care for the dub, then yes, the Dragon Boxes are the way to go. Some of the Japanese performances in Kai have this "been there, done that" feeling to them. Which is not to say they're *bad,* but they weren't as good as they were in Z. It's the exact opposite with the English dub of Kai, because all of the English actors seem really hyped up and energized at the idea of being able to do Kai like they should have dubbed Z. Whether their performances surpass the original performances of the Japanese Z actors is still debatable, but the fact that it's even debatable speaks volumes in and of itself.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

If you prefer the original Japanese cast, Kai is still the better bet.

Re: DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
I am a fan of the dub. But, Kai will be more consistent. In the remastered sets only the voice acting for Seasons 1,2,7,8, and 9 was good. Because they didn't redo all the voice acting.ohaimynameiserik wrote:It sounds like your preferred way of watching is with English audio.

No I haven't, I take it they've spruced it up a bit.JulieYBM wrote:I take it you haven't heard the Dragon Box mono?dan2026 wrote:If you prefer the original Japanese cast, Kai is still the better bet.

Because I remember the old audio being pretty poor, even for the late 80s/early 90s.

Re: DragonBall Z Remastered vs DragonBall Kai
It's much better audio, yeah. It's still not great, but I think it's as well as they can do with it for how the masters were handled, or some such thing. A significant step up from the singles' and season sets' audio, at any rate.dan2026 wrote:No I haven't, I take it they've spruced it up a bit.

And you have to keep in mind that while Kai may have a stereo Japanese track, it's not the same as Z's. The actors have aged and the soundtrack has changed. It's all personal preference, but I would rather take mediocre Z audio over pristine Kai audio, which I simply don't enjoy as much.

Finish your Remastered Season Sets of Z. Then just buy the larger collection of Z KAI in a couple years.
