Am I the only one who thinks this is stupid?

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:29 am

Okay, so I have encountered someone who says they won't ever buy any of the DVDs or Blu-Rays for DBZ Kai. When I asked them why, they said, "Because I hate the dub." I said in return, "That's okay though, they still have the subbed version." Their response was, "The subtitles clearly suck and are not good at all. They say Dragon Ball Z Kai when it's just Dragon Ball Kai. I will not support bad subs, I'm sticking to fansubs."

Am I the only one who thought this train of thought was stupid, or am I crazy?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

It's the pretty standard indignant, self-validating mental gymnastics that many people seem to showcase.

Beyond that, it's a clear showcase of ignorance. For whatever reason, Toei has instructed FUNimation to use the title "Dragon Ball Z Kai" as the title for the series, and this apparently extends to the subtitles for the Japanese track. Does this affect anything else at all? No. It does not.

Will someone like this use any example possible, no matter how minor, insignificant, un-affecting (is that even a word? I doubt it!), and chuckle-worthy it is to convince themselves that their (clearly stubborn) viewpoint and (lack of) purchase habits are holier-than-thou?

Yeppers. Sadly, even when factual information is presented, it will probably not go through if they're running around with their hands over their ears as badly as this. Not much you can really do about it other than provide that information again in a friendly manner, and move along.

Translation: I'm cheap as hell and need any ridiculous excuse to justify not buying the DVDs
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I believe Daimao is also the translator for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which, like this situation with Kai, is not called "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" in Japanese. It's instead called "Hagane no Renkinjutsushi Fullmetal Alchemist," which is exactly what he uses in the subtitles.

So, yeah. I highly doubt it's a problem on his end. And FMA:B also isn't a Toei series, of course.

If they don't like the DUB, they should buy the JP version. The only thing I don't like are the edits from stuff that was already on tv.

Yes, but who says the people behind FMA:B required FUNimation to use that title, as is the case with DBZKai?

Haven't the subtitles for DB-related material been solid for years? Where's this guy been?

It's clearly not a matter of what the realistic situation is -- it's a matter of, "This one thing is inconsistent, despite not being an issue with an actual translation; regardless, I will harp on this and use it as the sole reason to not purchase something. Also, I like to eat poop."

There's no reasoning with that.

That's a ridiculous reason.

The right answer would be that he's spending money on the Dragon Boxes instead.

I just read this thread, and the excuse "The subtitles suck because it is known as "Dragonball Z Kai" in the subs." has got to be the dumbest excuse I've ever heard.

Well then this person better be buying the Dragonboxes, in return!

Right....?
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

Well that person's argument is valid... not sound, but valid. To him, that train of thought makes sense. However, you should simply have informed him that besides the "Z" being thrown in there because of Toei (apparently according to Vegetto EX), the subtitles are very accurate. I don't think it's "stupid." Maybe he is just using that as an excuse. Not everyone can go out and shell money for DVDs/Blu-rays when they can get the "fan subs," which I assume comes from free internet streaming.

You're just justifying his sense of entitlement at that point, though -- "I can't afford it, so it should just be given to me for free." It's painfully clear that the person is looking for any reason, be it one based in reality or otherwise, to justify their bullshit.

I'm not even necessarily advocating the idea that copyright infringement and distribution is "theft"... but I sure do have a problem with anime fans of the Internet and their overblown sense of entitlement.

Furthermore... do you even know what fansubs are? Yes, fansubs may be streaming, but they may also be downloaded. Same goes for legal alternatives, too (usually available as streaming, but occasionally available as download licenses).

Mike's very right here. I actually did tell the individual about how that change was by request of Toei itself. He asked me how I knew, though, and I said, "Chris Sabat mentioned it on his Facebook page." His response was, "Chris Sabat is a joke actor though, he's probably wrong." That got me pretty angry firstly because I disagree with that statement, but secondly because his acting abilities were not particularly relevant one way or another in this conversation. So, I (politely) countered with, "Regardless of what you think of his acting abilities, he's the director of the English dub, so chances are he's privy to that kind of knowledge." He responded with, "I don't care, fansub translations are still so much better."

Like Mike said, he didn't have much of a reason at first and even when his argument is crushed he continues to look for whatever little reason he can find to keep sticking to his rather short-sighted beliefs.

Hilarious but probably true.

I am kind of annoyed by things like the lack of original titles cards in some of the releases, but I am not going to let it stop me from getting the show I love in a nice neat legitimate package.

As someone who spent probably thousands of dollars on the series, I'm not justifying his reason. But I think he used that statement to justify him not spending any money on the release. I know what fan-subs are. And I've seen plenty of links to sites that offer fan-subbed Kai, which is why I said "streaming" instead of "downloading," but yeah you're right.

In something like this it's hard to change someone's opinion, especially when there's an issue of money. Even if you did manage to prove him wrong by going through a whole process of sitting him down and showing concrete evidence of how the release is an appropriate translation and whatnot, he still wouldn't buy it.

So true. Anime fans today think that if a release isn't 100% to their liking, they can just pirate it. :?
