Dragonball backgrounds/songs
Hey guys, kinda new to forums and how they work so if I do things wrong, I apologize. Dang by the looks of it I might be able to find the answer i'm looking for. Kind of a dumb question but would anyone happen to know what the name of the song/background music is at the VERY beginning of Dragonball when Goku is being introduced by the narrator? (Original Japanese version too, not the dubbed versions) ... I've just always thought that theme captures exactly the innocence and story of what the series was and will continue to be. Such a great anime compared to the unoriginal stuff made today. Any info would help, and thanks for taking the time. Nick

Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
I believe it's called "Dai-Kouya" on the DB+DBZ 5-CD set.
PS: The music in the dub of DB is the Japanese score.

Wow that's what I was looking for. Thank you! Actually I happened to find an opening to the series the other day that had different music even with it being dubbed in english. Is this some of the redubbed stuff that's been coming out? Thanks!

Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
You're welcome.
I believe the episode in your link is the dub FUNi did in 1995, in conjunction with BLT Productions (?) and Ocean Group. Back then, the dub did feature a replacement score. However, that dub was cancelled after 13 episodes due to low ratings. For more info, check out Daizenshuu EX's Newbie Guide.
Edit: Then again, that could also be the Blue Water dub produced for airing in Canada and UK. I don't know. I have next to no familiarity with any versions of DB beyond the JP ver. and FUNi's in-house English dub.

I'm not familiar enough with the various dubs of the series, or even the original DB that much to know what this is, but it is not FUNimation's dub featured in this video. As stated, FUNimation did in fact keep the original BGM throughout their dub of DB (DBZ, until Kai, is another story entirely).Nwcali01 wrote:A link to the ep if it's allowed:

After 13 episodes? Back in 2001 or 2002 I bought the first boxed set of Dragonball I THINK released to the US under FUNi & Ocean which might be the one you're talking about because it's only 13 eps long and censored. It was the 2 disc blue boxed set with one of the DB movies included. After that I remember waiting for the next sets to be released but nothing came out until FUNi decided to release DB uncut. Smart move. Ill have to check the set when I get home.

Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
Funimation and Ocean Productions never worked together on Dragon Ball (only DBZ). The FUNi dub from 1995 was made in association with BLT Productions. Ocean DID produce an English dub (for Westwood Media), and it had the original Japanese music just like FUNi's 2001 re-dub.

Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
Well a lot of voices (Goku, Bulma, Roshi, Oolong, Yamcha, Puar, etc.) for the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball from way back when were done by the Ocean group and those did always have FUNimation logos all over them (I used to have the old VHS then DVD of them).
Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
I just checked the Ep. 1-13 boxed set I bought back in 01-02 and actually didn't see any Ocean logo on the back, only FUNi...not sure if it was still a collaboration or not but the episodes were only in english, and the link I posted before of Ep. 1 with the different music is from this boxed set, that's where it's from.

Re: Dragonball backgrounds/songs
That's the FUNi/BLT dub. Voice actors are freelancers, so they'll work for whatever companies are in the area. Ocean Productions and BLT Productions are both in Vancouver, Canada.
So, Ocean Productions had NOTHING to do with that dub.
