Pre-FUNi DB/DBZ/DBGT

Post by Nwcali01 » Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:22 pm

Hey is there a thread discussing how people used to get ahold of DB/DBZ/DBGT sagas and episodes way before FUNi started releasing the uncensored versions? I remember when I first got into the series, FUNi was working on releasing censored versions of DBZ and hadn't even started working on the original Dragonball yet and I kept reading about the 'uncensored' original eps. so I searched all over the internet for sellers who had copies of the Japanese released DB/DBZ and actually acquired them. Of course they were poor quality and fan subbed but had all the blood and perv humor only the Turtle Hermit could give. And the websites and contacts of the people selling these would often disappear because I can only guess selling these with FUNi having the rights was illegal. Yeah, try explaining that to a teen bent on finding the original DB/DBZ any possible way...copyright huh??? Anyway, it just brings back memories of searching for the original stuff and how cool it was to get to see it before Funimation actually released it to the masses.

A lot of people I know just bought the vhs fansubs from various sources (anime labs being the only one I'm familiar with).

There was a flea market like mall in my old town when I was younger, and some of the shops sold fansubbed vhs tapes. I learned of this because when I was 15, I was at my friend's house and his older brother had a few old fansubbed buu saga and GT vhs tapes and that's where he got them.

EDIT:

His older brother was about 4 years older than us, so I mean, he must have had them since 1999-2001, maybe even earlier.
