Nate Johnson Track
What do you guys think of Nate Johnson's DBZ music?
He is the guy who did the dub music for the season 1&2 orange bricks. I thought it was pretty decent actually. It seemed too dark from time to time, but some of his work such a Vegeta's Theme with the dark harpsichords was good. I think his biggest problem was that his music all sounded alike. Most of the time themes would change and you wouldn't even notice.
P.S. Lovin' the Kai music though.

I'm not much of a fan, honestly. I liked the Faulconer Productions score because a lot of the tracks are memorable and many of the characters had a distinctive theme that played with subtle variations throughout the series. Johnson's music had some themes to it, but nothing even close, and like you pointed out, it's hard to differentiate one track from another.
Re: Nate Johnson Track
His music for episodes 1-67 were good. I love his music for movie 2, it has that sci-fi feel to it and really did fit the mood and setting for the movie. Not to mention Gogeta's theme in movie 12 was great.

Re: Nate Johnson Track
I've seen movies 12 and 13 with his score. The music had a cinematic and epic feel to it. However, it was very generic and sounded like it came out of a typical action movie. It was leagues better than the "rock band" score used in previous movies, though.

Re: Nate Johnson Track
I usually just ignore the dub score but Nathan Johnson's work was fantastic, favourite being Movies 1 UUE, 12 and 13, mostly because it had a orchestral/organic feel to it which the others didn't really have. Though for the series, my favourite is Shuki Levy who did episodes 1-53 of the Ocean Dub.
Re: Nate Johnson Track
Nathan Johnson's score is fucking awful. It doesn't move at all, and is just random background noise. And the placement of the themes is horrible.

Incredibly generic. Which means bland. Which means awful.
Re: Nate Johnson Track
I think Nathan Johnson's work was good for the movies he did, but I disliked his work on the series.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I enjoy the OST quite a bit. The Recap music and one of the fight theme songs (used when Tien attacks Nappa with 1 arm) were great songs
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I've only heard his music on the series (I've watched a little of the Ultimate Uncut stuff hoping it would use a more accurate script) and well it's kind of like the Star Wars prequels were melted down into music.

Re: Nate Johnson Track
Just remember, the orange brick is still the same dub. You could have said he did the first 67 episodes.
Anyways, I would rather that they used Bruce Faulconer for the redub. It would be nice to hear this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWgEXZpeSqY) theme play when the Ginyu forces were doing their poses.

Hmm, I don't think that would have been used tbh. Those scenes are supposed to be downright corny. The Faulconer Productions Ginyu Theme wasn't really written with that in mind. I don't really think it was understand what they were all about.GreggMays64 wrote:Just remember, the orange brick is still the same dub. You could have said he did the first 67 episodes.

If that's the case, I think it's one of those circumstances where the lack of knowledge proved more helpful. I liked the more serious take with the Ginyu music, and always felt it worked--and would have worked for the earlier episodes before Faulconer took over--in the sense that it added a needed serious aspect to something that was otherwise just plain silly.cRookie_Monster wrote:Hmm, I don't think that would have been used tbh. Re: Nate Johnson Track
Keep in mind when the Ginyu Force did start doing cheesy poses, Faulconer Productions used cheesy music. It happened later on up at King Kai's place.
I think completely serious music over that completely corny first entrance would just be out of place. The music they have in Kai is actually really fitting and well done imo.

I do completely agree on the point about Kai. That song is so ridiculous in both Japanese and English, but it's so fitting.
Re: Nate Johnson Track
I think it's great and marvelous. It's very enjoyable.

I think Chris Psaros actually went out of his way to note on DBZU that the original dub handled the Ginyu Force's introduction perfectly by having what may be the only moment of dead silence in the entire show.

I actually liked a good majority of his music, especially his work on Fusion Reborn. My favorite track he composed was the one used when Vegeta Fought the "Beast" form of Zarbon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaANU4km_cs But I will always personally prefer the Faulconer Production music. That music is ingraved into my DNA, lol. XD
