Cell Games - Nightmare's End DVD problems

Post by SonGokuGT » Tue Feb 08, 2005 6:31 pm

The final battle between Cell and Gohan had THE WORST quality I've seen on any DB DVD. That episode had major pixelation issues, having seen the DragonBox version of that particular episode I was VERY disappointed. Now I'm not going to start up the FUNi vs. DBox thing again, but I think FUNi could've done a LOT better, considering it's the culminating point of the Cell Saga.

I've had player specific issues with it, on my normal player it looks a lot worse than on my lesser players, specifically any closeups of Gohan/Cell and the giant Kamehameha itself.

So it's possible it's just the shitty PS2 DVD player at work then?

If your playing it on a PS2 than that's probably the problem. I can barely get any of my Dragon Ball DVDs to work on my PS2, but they work fine in both my Sanyo and Sylvania players and on my computer. I pre-ordered my copy of Nightmare's End and I should be getting it in the mail tomorrow so I'll let you guys know how it works.

EDIT: Well I got my copy today and sadly it has the same problem on all of my DVD players. It seems like it's only that scene though, so I think I can live with it.

It's a basic problem with DVDs. Whenever something very flashy is happening on the screen, you start to get macroblocks and such. Watching it on differnt DVD players will have different results, but it'll likely never go away. I was just watching FUNi's FMA disk 1 today, and the transmutation scene at the beginning of the first episode had similar problems (if you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, then nevermind).

The Dragon Box disks are dual-layered, so problems like this are eliminated. However, in FUNi's defense, it's simply not worth it to make their DBZ disks dual-layered. The price-hike wouldn't be worth the 3 episodes on the disk, and considering you can get FUNi disks for like $10 a piece (if you wait out the older releases), it's really not so bad.

Meh, what can you do...

hmmm... I had no issues with my FMA on that scene, it was pretty crisp and clear, and on my PS2! I am sorry to be asking this but I'm not a hardcore DVD guy, but: "What exactly is Dual-Layered?" and what type of quality does it add to the overall product? All I've heard is that minor scratches won't crew them up as bad...

Dual-layed simply means that it's got two lays of data. Basically it allows for more information to fit on the disc. Now, I don't know the specifics, but it would seem that with the extra space you wouldn't need as much compression on the video, which would naturally improve the quality.

Edit: I also know that PS2 DVD players tend to dispise dual-layer DVDs. I know with older model PS2s (like mine) that they'd often be the cause of DREs.

Somehow ... I'm not surprised to read this.

Maybe there's a program out that can clean the disc up, then just reburn it.

How pixeled is it? Is Gohan's huge blast all pixeled like and lame looking?

It's just pixelation from time to time, so I'll try it out on my parent's player and let you know!
