Moments FUNimation's English Dub Did Better?

Post by Ussj Future Trunks » Mon Nov 08, 2010 9:21 am

What are some scenes in DBZ that you think the Dub pulled off better than the original?

Ones I can think of.
Fusion to Vegito (Goku's speech about pride)
SSJ3 Goku transformation
Vegeta's moments (Faulconer's Vegeta themes are his best)

I also prefer the DBZ Kai dub over the tired sounding Japanese seiyuus sometimes.

Vegeta's first Final Flash comes to mind. Ryo Horikawa's voice goes completely haywire when he shouts the attack name, and I'm really surprised they didn't do a second take on that.
I also liked Cell's death and Goku's SSJ transformation better in the dub, simply because of the BGM. Maybe it's because I saw the dub first, but I don't feel either of those moments have fitting music in Japanese, especially the SSJ transformation since it uses a generic cue that was constantly played ever since the battle against Nappa.

Editing the title of the thread, since the content of the original post seems to infer that it's FUNimation's English dub.

Just a reminder, folks -- we have a huge and very diverse worldly population. "The dub" doesn't really mean anything when you start a conversation with those two words, alone :).

(Also, I'm fairly certain there have been plenty of threads like this. I'm not discouraging this one, but if anyone wants to dig up links to some of the older ones, it may make for some worthwhile reading for the newer folks.)

Well I meant all English dubs in general (Funi, Ocean, Kai).

Vegeta's Final Flash and the entirety of episode 191, and a few other things. Neither of these are out of nostalgia because I didn't really get a clear look at these scenes until about 2 years ago.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!

Vegeta's "wrath" and Piccolo's "We're not here to bow down to your demands".

The spanish versions, the european versions, the asian versions(other than the original) and the african versions(if any) are all dubbings of the original, so as VegettoEX said, saying the dub doesn't neccesarily mean that it has to be english(although most of us would probably know what you meant regardless  )
As for the topic I'll agree with Goku's first SSJ transformation, the music fitted and it wasn't something generic, that had already been used many times before. It was something entirely new written specifically for that scene(AFAIK).
Also Gohan's ascension to his "Ultimate/Chou/mystic" state was handled better in the dub IMO. I understand why some people preferthis over this. It might also be because the japanese BGM doesn't sound as "clear" as the english BGM.

There are only two. And only one of them is a genuine moment/scene, the other is just one bit of line delivery I always loved for some reason.

Cell Game Re-Enactment

We had a thread about this recently, I'm too lazy to look for links, but most people agreed that the dub did a hilarious job with this. It was already meant to be comedic and absurd, but the Japanese version relied pretty much entirely on the cheesy costumes and 'effects' - the dub amped it up with amazingly intentionally horrible B-movie acting and dialogue and made it even more hilarious. Best moment of the dub, and hands down better than the original Japanese.

Cell Orders Cell Juniors To Kill

I never understood why I liked this so much. I know that the fanboy lust for Norio Wakamoto arguably rivals that for Ryusei Nakao, but...I always loved Dameon Clarke as Cell, too. I think he was to Cell what Ayers is to Freeza now in Kai; he pretty much nailed the same feeling of the character, and if we had the Kai level of script accuracy and directing, he'd be perfect (another reason I'm really sad that he won't be returning). I remember that there were moments where, if I went by the animation or compared it to the voice-free Manga, Cell should not have sounded angry, and he did...and one of those moments was when he was telling the Cell Juniors to kill everyone when trying to enrage Gohan. In the original, he sounded angry when he should have, at that point, still been cocky and sly...I remember the dub version of that line was something like 'Playtime is over, children!! You may kill them now.', and it always stuck with me because I thought the delivery was absolutely fantastic. He sounded appropriately cocky, certain that this would drive Gohan over the brink. I'm pretty sure this would have had to have been from episode #184 (original numbering), my all-time favorite episode, so that line would count as the only salvageable moment from the debacle that was otherwise that episode's dub...and juuuuuuuuust enough to make me not go rampaging through the streets like a madwoman screaming and destroying things because they ruined the best episode of the series. If anyone has a clip of that line to toss up, please do; I haven't heard it since it was on Toonami, I just remember liking it so much that it stuck with me.

That's just regarding DBZ - I can't really judge Kai, because I haven't watched Kai in Japanese and I'd be comparing dubbed Kai to Japanese Z, for one thing, and for another, I've been casually watching so many episodes out of discernible order on Nicktoons that I'd actually need to look back, stop, and think to compare [x] scene to the original, and I'm too lazy for that right now.

Cell's Death. Listening to "Ginyu Transformation" while seeing Cell get obliterated was one of the most epic things I've ever seen in my life. Still gives me chills every time I watch it.

I loved the re-enactment of the Cell Games in the dub it was hilarious.

And I agree with you 100% on Clark as Cell. I am very sad that he will not be returning because I loved his Perfect Cell voice.

Yep. Right there with you on that. Hiiiiilarious. Of course, it always made me bemoan the fact that the only thing FUNimation could do well was doing something badly.

"Bulma's your mother ?!!!"....Sean brought it with a little more humor.

"Haha, Vegeta's gonna be a daddy! This so weird. "....Sean made Goku so likable here. As if Goku was really freaked out yet so happy for Vegeta at the same time. Such a good trait. x3

The whole Pink shirt thing was gold. Actually I find that in that saga everybody had extra personality because of the dub. I loved it.

I love the piano/synth theme used for Vegeta's Super Saiyan transformation before he fights #19. Having unique themes and leitmotifs make many of the scenes in the dub feel more special than their Japanese counterparts. The dub score wouldn't have been bad except for the direction (Mickey Mousing and the wall-to-wall score with no breaks).
Going back to the Ocean dub, I love Scott McNeil's Piccolo.
I can see their parachutes.

Wasn't there no dialogue somewhere in the Kidd Buu/Vegeta/Goku fight where the Funi dub had a whole speech added? I loved that speech.

You mean that added dialog in the season set, during the flashbacks right before Goku throws the Genki Dama? The speech about how "killing is WRONG!!"?...

FUNimation had it right the first time, but added in that unused dialog for the season set, just for the sake of "revised dialog lolz!".

I don't remember exactly WHAT is was about I just remember someone on here saying Funi added it in and at the time I knew what they were talking about and liked it then so I assume I still like it. I'd rather there be a speech than a HUGE gap of silence.

Hm...

The only thing I can think of is the reasoning behind Cell returning as Perfect Cell after his self-destruct.

Japanese DBZ did everything else better.
