Favourite/worst movie villain

Post by Piccolo Daimao » Sat Dec 25, 2010 9:35 am

Who's your favourite movie villain and who's your worst movie villain?

My favourite movie villain is Tullece because I think he's a great representation of what Goku could've been if he hadn't hit his head as a child and, to me, he's not just an evil Goku. He has a cold feel to him, especially with that grayish skin-colouring of his.

My worst movie villain is Broli. No need to explain why.

Favourite - Garlic Jr because it gave some back story on how Kami became guardian of Earth, and he was good enough to have his own arc in the series.

Worst - Bojack

You know what my problem with the movie villains are? Absolutely none of them get the Toriyama aesthetic right.

There's one thing Toriyama never does, and that's use predictably evil looking villains. There are no burly muscle men. The movies, by contrast, are absolutely full of them. Garlic Jr. plays the best, being deceptively small and tying nicely into Dragon Ball mythology, but even he has to bust out his muscled form before he can do any real fighting.

Slug's a muscle-bound, over-elaborate maniac. Coola's final form makes his appearance more threatening, which is the exact opposite of what Toriyama does with Freeza, Cell and Buu. The individual Androids #13, #14 and #15 have acceptably Toriyama-esque designs, but again turn into a vaguely threatening wall of muscle for the final act. Bojack's a cackling strongman. Brolli is ... Brolli. Even Janemba goes from cute to ludicrously villainous and threatening, the exact opposite of the Toriyama approach. Wheelo, Bio-Brolli and Hirudegarn are all acceptable plays on B-movie tropes, but again, none of them seem like something Toriyama would ever really draw.

I don't know how Toei failed to pick up on this either, because they certainly have it down pat in GT. Unassuming characters like Luud and Baby are right in line with Toriyama's villain philosophy.

I guess this didn't really answer the question. I just wanted to express why none of the movie villains have ever really hit home for me. They're generic villains all. So I guess, by default I enjoy Garlic Jr., Wheelo, Bio-Brolli, Hirudegarn and Tullece the best. Since the only one of those with a dose of personality is Garlic Jr., I guess he wins it.

I don't mind most of the movie villains- the only one that bothers me is Brolly. The favourite concept, the worst realization. I love large, well built universes with complete background, lots of side stories, legends and mysteries solved by separated works (something that DB miss all the time). You can imagine my happiness when I've heard about something that seemed to perfectly fit my taste and my disappointment when I finally got it.

LSSJ's story had so great potential that it could have separated place in fanfiction.net. The only reason it doesn't is that his vision in that film castrates imagination. This is what the greatest villain of whole Saga was afraid of? 30 years old mental handicapped virgin wearing crappy clothes and jewellery stolen from Sailor Moon? Sure, Frieza wouldn't have survive sparing with him. He would have died laughing.

Gonna hop on the Broli hate bandwagon here, as I detest his existence.
Favourite movie villain? I'd have to go with... Garlic Jr? I dunno, I don't like many of the movie villains at all. They're all flat and boring characters. Garlic's immortality made him feel like more of a threat, so I'll go with him.

Best - Tullece from Movie 3. Very entertaining and badass to watch!
Worst - Broli. Enough said.

I really don't like movie villains that much, but if I have to choose my favorite one, I'll go with Garlic Junior - story of his father is interesting and his short saga in the anime was a very good filler. But how could he get sucked into the Dead Zone... Twice?

For some reason, I don't really like Bojack. He's just a generic bad guy without a personality (well, like most of the other movie villains).

I just want to start off saying I agree with you, at least for the most part. I love the way Toriyama designs his villains and I do enjoy how the forms that typically look the least threatening are almost always the most dangerous...but wouldn't it be a bit boring if all of the characters from the Dragon World followed that philosophy? I'm only talking designs here, personality is a whole different story.

The thing is, Toriyama openly admits that there are somethings he just doesn't think to do. Take the Bardock special for instance, just because it doesn't follow typical Toriyama fashion doesn't mean that it isn't good. Even Toriyama himself liked it enough to at least add pieces of it (if you are one of those who think only showing two panels means that is all that was canon in the manga) to his story. Toriyama also did a lot of the designs for the movie characters as well, you can blame Uiro, Slug, Coola, 13, 14, 15, Super 13, Broli on him. The fact that they don't fit Toriyama's typical villain mold may actually be a good thing. Had the movie characters actually been included in the manga and followed Toriyama's normal villain philosophy instead of possible Toei guidelines, it would have become just as predictable... "Bah, Goku can't kill that Broli guy yet! That form looks way too threatening to be his final one!"

They say variety is the spice of life, and I sort of agree. While I love Toriyama's handcrafted villains more than those from the movies, it is nice to see that they all don't follow the same stereotype. Sometimes you need a cliche to allow the original idea to still feel fresh.

Oh, and to answer the question:
Favorites: Janenba, Coola, Tullece, Broli (design only)
Worst: Garlic Jr., Bio Broli, Slug
Direct translations of the Korean DB Online timeline and guidebook.
My personal "canon" and BP list. (Coming Soon)

The best movie villain is Janemba. He's got a great, Toriyama-esque origin, that fits really well into the movie and his powers are interesting.

My least favorite is Broly. I just don't find this mindless hulk of muscle that appealing.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

My Favourite was Metal Cooler (also known as a thermos-flask) from the realisation of "crap, they might actually be in trouble now" when they are drained of there energy to power and use there heads for something different. Every other movie is, wait until Goku or Gohan flick the switch and become suddenly able to kill the antagonist

A close second was Janemba, it might have been a clone of the Buu saga, but it dug into the progression of the relationship between Goku and Vegeta. It teased the audience throughout with the fusion dance being done wrong and creating a glimpse of a NEW protagonist who ended up winning and not just same old rehashing of a the power up and win story. The side story of the movie gave it something else to provide the story with the Gohan vs Everyone or Goten and Trunks vs the dead army, it teased and teased the entire way through the movie, it was a refreshing and entertaining side story near the end of the series.

Garlic Jr, Dr Wheelo where great because it blurred the line between the series' slightly.

Lord Slug - was essentially Piccolo + Vegeta.

The Android's where a great idea until 13 went blue and essentially became a clone of cell in robot form.

Bojack just needed to be fleshed out story wise and not have the final fight end up like all of the others, Main character powers up to remove of the bad guy with one super blow, I'm looking at you Broli and Hirudegarn. (Lord Slug, Android 13, Janemba and the first Cooler movie don't count because it was an Energy wave and not a one punch and its all over fight)

I always had a problem with Turles because he's the American western comic book equivalent of a bad guy. A mirror image of the lead character who's evil.

Broli's story and character was just 1 dimensional, "Kakarotto Kakarotto Kakarotto Kakarotto"

El Piggy suffered the same as Bojack, Broli and Hirudegarn, it made them seem like an unnecessary speed hump for a quick ending.

Oh, I definitely agree. The problem isn't that the movie villains abandon that philosophy, but that they replace it with generic evil strongman, and they do it in almost every film. I wouldn't have a problem with taking a different approach if that different approach were interesting.

The movies do succeed at certain things Toriyama would never add, such as interesting settings. The setting is a strong point in almost every Z movie.

I agree with you. But don't you think that part of the reason is because it's a movie, they don't have enough time to create an interesting villain with depth and personality? Because main villains like Piccolo Daimao, Vegeta and Freeza may be more developed characters because they have more screentime and room to develop, whereas movie villains have less than an hour. And most of that time's taken up by fighting.

Favorite.

Janemba: We need more demons in the Dragon Ball universe, and I just love how he looks. He might have not have that much character, but I think he was a badass villain.

Coola: Great villain, and was just good as his brother. And that I love his 5th and Metal forms as well.

Worst:

Bio Broly: He is a walking piece of crap. Nothing else to say about him then he just another cash in on the Broly character.

Lord Slug: Another Namke villain would be nice if he was not a poor man version of Piccolo's father.

Favorite - I'm torn between Garlic Jr. and Janemba.
Least - I'll give you a hint. It starts with "B" and ends in "roli".

Surely they could have done without 45-minute fights though. Or just picked designs and personalities that are less ... generic.

It's really neither here nor there. It's not worth dissecting what went wrong with short movies meant to entertain Japanese children fifteen years ago, and I'm sure they did their job just fine. They just could've been a hell of a lot more interesting.

Strangely enough, I think movie 8 inverts it pretty well, with the bad guy starting as a scrawny little wuss then beefing the fuck out.

Favorite would have to be either Janemba or Coola. Let's be honest, Janemba was a giant Boo ripoff, so that's why I liked him. I like Coola because I think he just has a really interesting design and transformation that's different from Freeza's.

Least favorite is of course Broly, for reasons I have stated many times since I've been here, and I don't want to repeat.
