Funny Funi Cut...
I won this DBZ DVD lot on ebay recently and one of the DVD's was The Path To Power (cut version), So I figured I might as well see how they cut certain parts...
There is a part where Commander Red and Black are talking (Chapter 16) about how Red wanted to use the balls to grow taller and then Black shoots him. On the cut version it plays out like this:
Red: Now the army wants me taller then you with a big deep voice and a size 18 ...
(Gun shot heard) Dragonballs fall off ledge where they both stand, red stumbles and also falls off the ledge
Red: (as he falls) Shoe....
I dont know I kinda thought it was funny, Also at the end I don't know if this was in the uncut but when Goku wishes for 8-chans life back without a bomb inside him, you hear 8-chan in the background drunting then saying G..Goku?

I have the edited release, and at some moments it surprised me with some of the stuff FUNi actually left in. It's a really good movie, that since seeing it, has gotten me to thinking about how neat it might be to make a DragonBall Z movie in the same art style, and the same story telling style (similar to the intro movie in Sagas.)
As a whole I think I like this DragonBall movie better than Curse of the Blood Rupies, which feels to me like they were just trying to cram far too much of the story in far too short of time. Not to say that this didn't do it, I think with the liberties taken with this (it's almost a parody of a parody,) movie- that a lot of it just 'flows' really well.

"Curse of the Blood Rubies" is just FUNi's name for their original release of DB Movie 1, called Shenron no Densetsu ("The Legend of Shenlong") in Japanese. It was dubbed in 1995 using the Ocean Group cast, along with the first thirteen episodes. I believe the dub actually has footage from the TV series spliced into it (to account for footage loss from editing?).
As far as it being a pilot, that was only in the US, and it accompanied the original 1995 DB episodes on TV. In Japan, it really was a movie, shown at a Toei festival just like all the others.
And because it was so closely associated with the first thirteen episodes, it shares the same Kidmark licensing problem.

"Curse of the Blood Rubies" was my introduction to Dragon Ball. Because they showed that girl Penny from the movie in the opening for DB at the time, I was wondering when she was going to show up in the series when it first came on. It did have some funny moments though, with Old Man Roshi going, "So, you've come to kill me and steal my shell!" That and the turtle accounting his not being able to ride the Nimbus due to his cheating at poker.
