Toriyama's a genius!

Post by kenisu3000 » Mon Mar 28, 2005 1:17 pm

I was searching through some older threads and came across SuperSonic's "Shocking Moments" thread. I wanted to post my two cents, but it was old enough to be considered necro-posting. Instead, I'm starting this new thread.
My most shocking moment was when I saw Gohan go SSJ2 the first time in Japanese. I had seen the dub before this, but THIS version of the scene... that's what converted me to the original version.
My second most shocking moment was the appearance of Cell. I mean, he just pops out of nowhere, while all this time you've been expecting Androids 17 and 18 to be the ultimate villains in the saga. Then, all of a sudden, a second time machine shows itself, and Kami says to Piccolo "For the past four years I've sensed a terrible presence... but it was not the androids I sensed!" Holy sweet mother of pearl, if that doesn't scare anyone, what would? Ain't Toriyama a genius and a half?!
[EDIT: Not only did I want to put in my two cents, I also wanted to put two c's in the "cents". That's what you get when you type like a madman.]

The entire buu saga was full of plot twists.
In the other sagas there is a point when you realise who will defeat the major villian and how. But every time you think you have it sussed, the hero gets sucker punched and a new one pops up to take his place.
The sheer story-line alone would make this saga a great book. Thankfully we have it with images/animation and I couldn't be happier.

No I did mean Buu. The cell saga is great (probably my fave) but The buu sagahas more transformations, Plot twists and so on.

Sure Toriyama's great for having come up with those crazy plots, but really, if it weren't for his pesky editors, there wouldn't be a Cell or Buu story arc.

Well then we shall find these men and build shrines in their likenesses.
Get them in the same room with Toriyama-sensei and hope for the best. :P

Gohan's SSJ2 scene was what sparked my intrest in the original version as well. I didn't realize how badly butchered the dub was until I saw that scene and how vastly different it was from the dub. I finally understood why people were always saying Gohan's SSJ2 transformation was so incredible.

At least... I finally understood after I picked up my jaw off the floor :P

I've seen the SSJ2 Gohan scene in both versions and I really don't see what's so much better about the Japanese version. They're both just as cool IMO.

You know, no Gohan talking to himself, a sweet vocal song...

I was pretty upset the first time I saw the scene dubbed, but subsequential watchings has lowered that, its certainly the lesser of the two in my eyes, but its not THAT bad. But Spirit Vs Spirit is just that cool of a song, and Falconer didn't really do anything with it. If he'd even just reused the dub music used for Goku's Super Saiyan 1 transformation (which is one of his few good BGMs), at least it'd have some kiond of significance.

Coming from a director's point of view (not that I *am* a director, but I aspire to be one), you have to really realize which version does this scene justice. Gohan going SSJ2 is (arguably) the best scene in all of DBZ. It may not seem significant if it's all a matter of visuals, but honestly, which one are you going to remember? Which one is going to make such an impact on your memory that it makes the insert song your absolute favorite song, not only from the series but your favorite song PERIOD? Yes, both versions use the same video, but it's the subtle genius in the audio that gets you, and makes it something to cement into your psyche.

Not that I'm trying to start an argument or anything. After all, that IS your opinion that both versions are equally good, but I just wanted to expand on why exactly I love the Japanese scene SO MUCH.

Agreed, the visuals are the same in both parts, but it's the combination of the audio and video that hits you. I remember playing this song (Spirit vs Spirit) over and over again when I saw that scene originally. But the emotion behind it isn't just the song, but the way that it matches the scene so perfectly.

The infamous SSJ2 scene has inspired SO MUCH in me. I mean, I had already grown up wanting to be an animator/director, but THIS... this gave me a much better outlook on how to make scenes GOOD!

Let me tell you that background music is key. The best tv shows and movies (and games even) have had memorable themes. Music really accentuates the action and gives the scene its mood. So yeah, if you're ever a director, don't forget this! :D

This is exactly why I like watching Dragonball Z in Japanese. The voice actors & original script is better than that of FUNi's . The music, especially leaves a great impression & impact. You really get a different experience watching it in Japanese.

Yup, I'm currently studying Animation, and one of the many influences for me is, of course, Dragonball! The art pushed me to better my drawing skills and the story influences a lot of my writing, when regarding story progression and structure.

I like more the english (FUNi) music and voices.

I dont like Goku´s girlish voice in japanese, same with Gohan when he turns a teen. This is because it is a woman who makes the voices of Goku, Gohan and Gotenks. In my opinion they should have chosen a real man to make the voices of Goku and Gohan (Teen) like they did in FUNi.

About the music, the FUNi background music is better in my opinion, but thats just MY opinion.

One of my shocking (best) moments, was the episode "People of Earth Unite" in both FUNi and Japanese version. The moment when they are giving their energy to Goku (thanks to Mr. Satan), exactly the moment when you see the cities and the big white balls going up. The music in both versions gave this kind of feeling: "finally after so much suffering and destruction caused by Buu, the people of earth have decided to join in the battle against Buu and give their energies to Goku to eliminate the demon that destroyed them before"... something like that. It was really nice.

Another great moment was when Vegeta finally accepted that Goku was better than him "Episode 265 Vegeta´s respect" and the episode when Fat Buu is finally hatched, the moment in which Gohan, Kai, Babidi and Dabura faces turn white because of the cloud turning into a figure that turned out to be the soooo feared Majin Buu.

Another good moment was when Vegeta was fighting Goku (Buu saga) and was remembering the past, explaining Goku the humiliation he felt by being surpassed by a mere low level soldier and his kid.

There are more but i will stop here. I really loved the Buu saga, especially in the english (FUNi) version. The music played a big role.
