Julius Dobos, for fans of Faulconer Productions

Post by cRookie_Monster » Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:45 pm

http://www.juliusdobos.com/

He finally updated his website, lots of tasty electronic music pieces that remind me a little of DBZ. He was the arranger who essentially replaced me after I left. I just received word that Super Buu is actually his arrangement (after my time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zKs_joz2eg

I'm pretty sure this is his arrangement too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAIaOP8X96I

So yeah he may have worked on more Buu music than I had thought originally.

[edit- Ah he has a youtube page as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/juliusdobos ]

Edit again. Julius actually has the balls to claim DBZ on his bio page. Good man Good man, because it's TRUE.

Moving to the United States – The Production Years

Motivated by the creative possibilities of motion pictures and music, he relocated to the United States in 2000.
He composed music for Aerobatics World Champion pilot Péter Besenyei for the World Championship of Aerobatics, wrote music and programmed sounds for several popular television shows. His work can be heard in “DragonBall Z”, in an award-winning claymation series “Red Planet Blues”, in “The Reality of Speed” and “Your House & Home” television series.
Dunno if many of you remember, but I called Julius out in this video 4 years ago as an influence (when I thought he might have "arranged" the SSJ3 theme, I now think that was Bruce himself)

That's some really good stuff. I love electronica, and he clearly has a good ear for arrangement.

It's always cool for me (as a fan of the Faulconer Productions Music score) to hear stuff that the real talent behind it are putting out these days.

So he's the guy who came up with the wonderful piece of art called "Super Buu's theme"? I must send him a message saying how much of a genius he is. Since I now know he arranged my favorite theme of all Faulconer Productions music, I can live a little happier now.

Great stuff! The Boo arc has Faulconer Productions' best work by far.

One of these days do you ever think you'll be freely able to say who created what tracks? That would easily help me appreciate the dub music more if I knew who exactly composed what but it seems like there's some legal trouble there. I say this suddenly because I didn't even know there was a 3rd arranger. I thought it was only you and Bruce. That seems a little frustrating to me, to get gyped out of recognition after working for a company for so long. Er, although maybe I'm over stepping my boundaries.

I dunno, but the guy who deserves more credit than anyone is Mike Smith, there were actually 4 of us. Unfortunately Mike hasn't really published anything else. Ben Kasparek was pretty important as an editor as well.

Check that video out. The special limited edition of Volume I spells some of it out, if only cryptically.

The Buu saga dub music is my favorite soundtrack of the series. That "Gohan Powers Up" song is my favorite theme as well. Thanks for the info.

Did he compose this too? I remember hearing this in some parts of the Buu saga as well as the end of the Cell saga.

Nope that's before Julius' time. Julius came on right before I left, during the last couple Cell Saga shows. I left after working on the Pikkon and Grand Kai themes.

The piece you linked was arranged\performed by Mike Smith, I think for the end of the Frieza Saga. It might have been a fav of Ben's (editor who started early Cell Saga? maybe earlier..foggy memory =\) or even Julius. I don't know how much editing Julius did, if any. I saw him edit one show during the brief time we were there together.

I'd be interested in knowing which pieces can actually be 100% attributed to Bruce. Most of my favorites pieces from the score came from Mike and Scott apparently.

OMG major news. A friend of mine was chatting with Julius on youtube. It turns out SSJ3 Powerup is actually his arrangement\performance. Mystery finally solved! Wow, yeah he did a lot more arrangement work than I thought on the later shows. Yay, I'm so glad to finally know...I'm glad it's Julius. I had originally suspected that but had changed my mind.

I can confirm these for Bruce himself:
  • DBZ Theme (opening)
    Scenes from last week
    Episode closing music
    Ginyu Transformation
    Cell Jrs Attack\theme whatever
    Guru Theme (choral one)
    Goku Dies
Of course there's more, but I get real foggy on pieces done before or after me.

Heh, I didn't know he made the "Goku Dies" track. Question Scott - Did Bruce ever work with you guys on any of these songs in person? Or did he work on them somewhere else, and gave them to you guys to incorporate/edit in to the episode music track?
My Youtube account (Coycoy88)

I primarily rip and upload unreleased Faulconer Productions music, as well as some other American dub music.

You mean as far as the editing part went? Most of the time he left that to us. If something was written to picture, like with Goku Dies, Ginyu Transformation, and Cell Jrs, there was no need for that particular scene of course. If it wasn't in place already, you just plop it in where it goes.

I downloaded Julius's album from iTunes. Superb work. Some of the tracks remind me of the soundtrack to Unreal Tournament. I loved that soundtrack. "The Last Millennium" definitely sounds DBZ-ish.

YEah one caveat about Mike, Bruce, Julius and myself is that our straight up personal styles won't necessarily match the "Faulconer Productions Music" DBZ style. We've all progressed since then and when working on the show there was an effort to keep the style somewhat consistent, inline with Funimation's wishes, and of couse appropriate. I know there was some friction between Julius and Mike over the consistency part. Julius being the new guy with his own sound and not having contributed to anything until much later.

Here's my attempt at summing up each of us in relationship to the show:

Me: Heavier, much more aggressive sounding than the show. I usually was holding back (except with obvious arrangements like Destruction and Droids vs Bikers) My top goal is usually to get a "wow" from the listener, whether its huge orchestral sounds, pounding metal, surreal ambient sounds, etc. My entire "Z Music" CD isn't really representative of me...it's a return to the "Faulconer Productions" mindset to prove a point to the fans. "Shrubbery of Darkness" and "Have Some Epic" probably represent my style a lot better. But I know what I think works for the show...and my personal style is *definitely* too heavy. I didn't like putting in "Destruction".

Mike: Lighter and more peaceful than the show, Mike likes to keep things quirky and interesting as a top priority. He would keep something when he thought it had character. He also talks about preferring to write music that's singable. Honestly I haven't heard a lot of Mike outside of the studio...I wish he would frickin release some more material like he promised to do. oh Gohan and Icarus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bAofAOUAo0 is a good example of Mike in his preferred element (well except the heavy bits) Mike arranged a lot of the heavier synth tracks some say are "superficial" (him being the dominant arranger in the series), but it's really not who he is. It's Funimation. Just shows Mike's versatility (I think all 4 of us were versatile) Also a big point about Mike is he was there from the start with Bruce. So they together laid down the "Faulconer Productions" sound initially.

Julius: More uplifting and pop influenced I think. Julius seems to me to be about going for a really glorious kinda wonderment feel. I think he didn't like working with the DBZ synths either (I had my own issues with it as well, since I think we both have an affinity for the Hollywood sound...which Mike despises)

Bruce: More traditional, based in "art" music. The man has a Phd in music. His orchestral stuff is actually very rich and sophisticated. I have a lot of respect for his skills actually...but like any of us, he's very diverse. I think his strong suite is orchestral work, especially given budget for a real orchestra. He gravitates toward stuff that is a bit cheesy for me rock wise, but he has a super good ear and can pick up new sounds pretty fast. His education gives him a lot of control, but Mike says he rips on classical artists too much and has no originality (which remember is Mike's top priority)

Would you say the Dr. Gero Theme you arranged was more along the lines of your own style, or someone else's?

Furthermore, who arranged the Frieza Theme?

Hmm, no that's pretty much my sound, but with the "Faulconer" synths. It's pretty dark stuff, which is what I've focused on a lot in my own personal music. I gotta say though that the beat was put together by Mike. I liked that beat, pretty sick job by Mike.

I'm actually not sure about the Frieza theme. It kinda sounds like Bruce to me, but I understand Mike arranged a huge amount of the early stuff... so yeah not sure. I'd have to ask Mike.

btw, been conversing with Julius on youtube myself now. Yeah SSJ3 is definitely him arranging/performing. He said that and Gohan Powers Up were his favs.

He also wanted me to promo this for him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogE3DTRkpq4

It's doing pretty damn well for only having been up a week.

Here's part of the email he sent:
What is Mike doing? Does he still live in TX? Thanks for sending the dbz fans my way... and for checking out Transitions (it's kind of a compilation from tracks I've written in the [past several years... feels old already:) Would you do me a favor? Could you share my Fukushima Tribute video with the fans? Only if you like it, of course. It's a completely non-profit deal, I'm trying to make people think about the real-life heroes and realize that we have to support those who decide to sacrifice their own life for ours. I'm gonna attach the video.... I think it's a good cause to support. Thanks, Scott.

Both your's and Julius music in the Funimation Dub of DBZ was amazing, I'm glad your both still making stuff for the fans after all these years.I wish Tom Keenlyside or John Mitchell could release or do the same as what you and Julius are doing(Use Ocean fans always did get the bad end of the deal.....).We never even got an official release of the soundtrack.
