Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
I was planning on ordering the Kai dvd's from Walmart online store because they are really cheap but wanted to ask for those who know about the quality difference between this or the Blu-Ray stuff if its a huge difference between the two releases. I can play Blu-ray's no problem (although my PS3 is kind of busted at the moment
) but I don't think the series is worth the extra cost for what is generally a anime from the early nineties. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken but my opinion is based on the fact that over at the Fanboy Review when this releases started coming out last year, Mark got around to doing a video/color comparison between the American dvd, bluray & Japanese bluray and think that the colors on the dvd actually look better and more "natural" than does on both blurays. Can anyone clear me on this? Thanks

Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
The quality is not much better on Blu-Ray, you get no exclusive features, and it'd cost you a LOT less to get it on DVD.
I'd just get the DVD combo packs.

What features are on the DVD and not the BRs?
Either way, DVDs are in the past, go for Bluray.

Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
I would go with DVD. The packaging, in my opinion, is better than the Blu-rays, and it's basically the same thing (the Blu-ray just has better quality and fancy menus), so just go with the DVDs, they are much cheaper. The DVDs' quality are actually pretty good, and while the Blu-ray quality is much better, I would go with the DVDs.
So mondo lame.
Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
Honestly, only go for the blu-rays if you can get them cheap (Amazon currently has Part 1 for $19.99). Other than that, they certainly aren't worth the $30-$40 price tag.

Well when companies include special features on Blu-Ray and not DVD, people tend to complain.

What about the people who don't have blu-ray players (or a PS3) like me?

Reasons to get the Blu-ray over the DVD:
1. 1080p video
2. 24p frame rate
3. Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio (English), Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (Japanese)
4. Not that much more expensive. Actually, the Part 2 Blu-ray is currently cheaper than its DVD counterpart on Amazon.

Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
Exactly, it's mainly actually having a higher quality version in general, plus yeah as long as your butt has a HDTV? Then go for it, it's not THAT terribly expensive, especially if you do actually look online.Mountain wrote:Reasons to get the Blu-ray over the DVD:

Oh plus the Openings, Endings and Eyecatches look amazing in HD.
Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
You guys are really making me regret recently ordering the DVD bundled versions from Walmart. Is there no surround sound on the DVD versions?
I guess I don't regret it too much after realizing the price difference at the moment.
Blu-ray price for all 4 at Amazon = $107.46 USD
DBKai Blu-ray Part 1 = $19.99 USD
DBKai Blu-ray Part 2 = $30.99 USD
DBKai Blu-ray Part 3 = $26.49 USD
DBKai Blu-ray Part 4 = $29.99 USD
DVD price for all 4 at Amazon = $110.46 USD
DBKai DVD Part 1 = $23.99 USD
DBKai DVD Part 2 = $42.49 USD
DBKai DVD Part 3 = $19.99 USD
DBKai DVD Part 4 = $23.99 USD
DVD price for all 4 bundled at Walmart = $49.92 USD
DBKai DVD bundle Part 1 & 2 = $24.96 USD
DBKai DVD bundle Part 3 & 4 = $24.96 USD
I payed a total including shipping and tax from Walmart of $56.86 USD

I've listened to both audio's play and they sound the same, the picture is slightly better on the Blu-Ray though.

Dont forget that Blu Rays are a bit more durable then DVDs so its less easy to scratch them.Mountain wrote:Reasons to get the Blu-ray over the DVD:

Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
Yes, the DVDs have 5.1 surround sound for the English audio track, but the audio is lossless on the Blu-rays.
Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
What's lossless audio? And what about the Japanese audio? Is it different than what the blu-ray version has?

Re: Kai DVD or Blu-Ray?
The DVDs have Dolby Digital, which is lossy: a form of compression which discards data (.mp3 is another form of lossy).Drabaz wrote:What's lossless audio? And what about the Japanese audio? Is it different than what the blu-ray version has?
The Blu-rays have Dolby TrueHD (one of the new HD audio codecs, the other being DTS-HD MA), which is lossless: a form of compression, in which no necessary information is lost; it sounds about the same as the original audio source (uncompressed).
The Japanese 2.0 audio is lossless on the Blu-ray, lossy on the DVD.
Mind you, this is a rough explanation, but I don't have much time. I hope this helps! =P
